Summer is here! Yummy! Okay, so SUMMER is here! People consider Memorial Day to be the kick-off of Summer. This is the time where the picnics begin, the outdoor activities start, the great weather rolls into town and when adults, children and dogs alike are running through the parks! I am sure there will be lots of outdoor BBQs and picnics, so I decided to research things (especially different kinds of fruits) that our babies could eat. After Tara (LvMyYorki) posted about strawberries, I thought I'd try to find ALL fruits! FOOD DOGS CAN EAT: Vegetables. Most veggies are OK for dogs, either raw or cooked. Stay away from onions and garlic because they can cause anemia in dogs. Rice and pasta. Low in fat and calories, these foods make great treats. Use these to add some bulk for weight control diets. Cooked meats without bones. Small amounts of cooked red meat may be OK when fed occasionally and in moderation. Remember that cooked meats can be high in fat and do not contain the proper balance of nutrients your dog requires. Dairy products. Dairy products, such as cottage cheese, low-fat yogurt, and hard-boiled eggs are OK when fed in moderation. Fruits. Dogs will eat both fresh and dried fruits. Stick with apples, berries, bananas, and seedless watermelon. Don't let your dog eat too much! Too much fruit may upset your dog's digestive system. FOODS TO KEEP AWAY FROM DOGS: Sweets. Under any circumstances, DO NOT let your dog eat dark chocolate. The chemical theobromine contained in chocolate is toxic to canines and even in small amounts can prove to be fatal. Uncooked red meat and bones. Uncooked meats may contain harmful bacteria, parasites, and cysts, which may make your dog sick. Bones may be dangerous because they can splinter and puncture your dog's gastrointestinal tract. Chicken and turkey bones are a potential hazard for your pooch. These small bones can splinter and puncture the stomach or intestines, or cause choking. Grapes and raisins can be toxic to canines if eaten in large amounts. Onions and garlic can cause anemia in dogs.

Thanks, Natalie! We told our vet we fed our little yorkies grapes from time to time (they loved them and they were in an Asian soft drink we get). He gave us the same info ... grapes can actually cause kidney failure and that onions can be deadly to some little guys and cause anemia in most. It brought home to us that people food often really is not a good option for our little ones! Don (friend of James :-)

I missed the part about strawberries....are they OK????? We just had a big cook-out at my house this evening...YUM (I kept the little dogs in the house....too many 'food droppers' around here) We just had hot dogs, slaw, chili...etc...and chips and pasta salad....... The BEST PART was the....FRESH LOCAL STRAWBERRIES.....bought a gallon and a half....most were washed and cut up and sugar added...poured over some fresh angel food cake and cool whip on top...the rest were washed and gobbled up by all the kids..... AND...... we had the best canteloupe...YUM!!!!!!! AND..... watermelon.......not local but darn good for this early in the season...... AND..... fresh peaches.....THE FRESHEST because I went across the road and picked them myself!!!!!! CAUTION......!!!!! "Too much fresh fruit at one time can cause upset tummies in grown-up folks, too"....(I feel the "peach dance" coming on right now!!)
