| A Day of Remembrance Happy Memorial Day Everyone!! Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all. |

| I've had many family members(grandfathers, uncles, cousins) serve our country past and present. I'm the proud mother of a son whom is active military & just spent 13 months in Iraq and a nephew whom just returned from Afghanistan, thankfully they both returned from "the sandbox" safely. The city in which I live has lost 3 young men in Iraq. PLease Honor those whom have given all by remembering and honor those whom continue to serve. I absolutely can not read the following poem with weeping. I'm sure many of you have read it before THE FINAL INSPECTION The soldier stood and faced God Which must always come to pass He hoped his shoes were shining just as brightly as his brass. "Step forward now you soldier, how shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To my Church have you been true?" The soldier squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't Because those of us who carry guns Can't always be a saint. I've had to work most Sundays and at times my talk was tough, And sometimes I've been violent, Because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny That wasn't mine to keep... Though I worked a lot of overtime When the bills just got too steep, and I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear, and sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place Among the people here They never wanted me around Except to calm their fears. If you've a place for me here, Lord It needn't be so grand I never expected or had too much, But if you don't, I'll understand." There was silence all around the throne Where the saints had often trod As the soldier waited quietly, for the judgement of his God, "Step forward now, you soldier You've bourne your burdens well, Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in Hell."

| Brenda: What a beautiful poem! It did bring tears to my eyes. If it were up to me everyone in the military who served in time of war would be millionaires. I do not think our government can ever repay them enough for their service. It saddens me to know that they and their families suffer in poverty instead of living the life they deserve after risking or giving their lives in service to our great nation! |

| They are definately underpaid. I could go on and on about that. My son never complains, but as a mother and a grandmother and trying to help his wife deal with medical care (finding someone whom would except miltary insurance) for my three young grandkids while they moved back here..away from a military base was a nightmare and a joke. Not to mention that many of our enlisted whom have young children qualify for the WIC program..something isn't right with that picture.

| I agree and I wish our government would raise their pay and their benefits as well as the death benefit (that's a joke in my opinion!) They say they support our military but I don't see it! |

| Luvmypupster, Thank you for the support,my son is Air Force, and is stationed right in Baghdad, he has been there since March. I send him packages and he says he doesn't need anything, except pistachios. He loves them. I am a member of a group here that have military overseas. I am myself a GI bride from England, and have had members of my family in both the British and American forces, so I am bi-patriotic. I fly the American and British flags outside of my store. I have been a citizen since 1974. Thank you again for your patriotism and your love of the military, you are a woman after my own heart, and I appreciate your words of encouragement.
