YT Addict | How Is This For Ironic As if this isn't ironic! Today I finally worked up the courage to call the vet and schedule a date to have Bella Spayed. I have been racking my Brain on how this will affect her both short and long term. Like it will be better for her long term b/c she wont get ovarian, uterine, or fallopian cancer. However also she is 7lbs @11 mos and that is really small for a major surgery. I know they do this for smaller dogs and other small animals but I am just very over protective! I want what is best for her. So I made the appointment. She had gone into heat right after Christmas and it ended at the end of January. So I figured I had at least until June to get this done. Not 10 mins after scheduling the appointment I find a spot of blood. I checked her and she is in heat again! The appointment isn't until May so I kept the appointment in hopes that she will be finished by the time the appointment comes around. I called the vet back just to clarify and he said they could keep the appointment and to just call and reschedule if necessary. which was nice. But omg what a morning I had. Now how is that for ironic.lol |

| Wow that is ironic.....but really hun, dont be too too worried about the spaying....My Bella was only around 3 lbs tops I think when I had her done and she came out just fine. Louie was also small and all was well! I know that we worry so much about these beautiful little babies of ours. Good luck and let us know how everything goes ok.

| I've been trying to pull myself together enough to call the vet to make an appt for Chloe to be spayed. She's only 2lbs! So, I'm sure you can imagine how worried I am The vet said she'd be fine, but I don't want to do it

YT Addict | Brain Fart Thanks for the encouragement. I needed to hear that. I have just been so worried about how she will handle it. I have a few questions, Should they put her on antibiotics just as a precaution, or will that build up an unnecessary immunity? What about an e-cone. Should they provide one or should I get one? Did they give your baby pain killers? or will she tear her stitches if she doesn't know she not in pain? Any info would be welcome. I planned to get this info from my vet but b/c I was very frustrated this morning these ?s slipped my mind. I don't want my fellow YT members to think I am oblivious and wouldn't think to ask my vet. Do you think I should call back tomorrow and see what they say? Anyhow I trust your experiences and hope to use this info when l talk to the vet. I am just so concerned! |

| Some vets give antbiotics and or pain killers and some dont. You can get an e collar from your vet iif you want one. I didnt get on. My Jewels was only 5 lbs when she was spayed and she did fine. I am sure your girl will too

| My shih tzu Georgia was probably around 4lbs. when she got spayed and did fine. The only problem was she was so darn active for the next few days that the surgical glue holding together her incision started to come unglued! Her incision just looked like it was splitting open a little so off we went and they put some more glue on the incision. The biggest thing is keeping them quiet for the next week or so that it takes for them to heal!! They feel so good and normal within a short period of time and don't know why we're keeping them down. Here's the answer to your questions from my experience 1. No, my vet did not recommend antibiotics as a precaution 2. My vet does not routinely give out cones unless licking of the incision becomes a problem. Neither one of my dogs was sent home with an e cone and did just fine. 3.Yes, she was on pain killers for the rest of the day and two days after. Good luck, I know how worried you are but I'm positive your baby will be just fine. |

| I believe they should be on antibiotics prior to and following the surgery. Pain relief should be handy if you need it. Your questions are excellent and I would not feel uncomfortable with your inquiry. She is your baby!

Definitely antibiotics. Before and after. Do not do the surgery with out them. The way I feel about pain killers is that, if I had just had a hysterectomy they'd better have me on some kind of pain killers. Pain is the same (if not worse) for our furbabies.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Definitely pain pills, hun! They will help not only with the pain (pain-"free-nees" speeds healing) but ALSO w/ the itching. Don't be hesitant in using them, you don't her hurting. I would be cautious about pre-antibiotics unless her immune system is compromised. Just like humans, we don't want to be overly zealous in prescribing antis bc THIS is why we have ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANT strains in our world right now. Your baby will be okay - I totally feel your pain though, dear! Ann

| Here at the shelter I work at, since the vet does so many spays and neuters, the animal only has to weigh 2 lbs. We do kittens and puppies and everything always goes fine. Just make sure that afterwards you keep her VERY CALM for 2 weeks. That is so important. Your baby will be fine.
