Default Maggies vet visit yesterday. not great

I just took her to have her anal glands cked and nails cut. While he was cutting her nails he noticed her knee popping out of joint and making a little clicking noise. He said she seemd to have luxating patella (SP). Well, I felt bad because I had meant to mention this to him and I forgot about it. But about 2 months ago, right after her last vet visit, I noticed her running and suddenly picking up her right hind leg and running on 3 legs off and on one day. I cked her paw to see if something was there and it was. It was the shell of an acorn so I got it out and she seemed ok for then. then a couple more times she did this during that week or so. My sister in law was here once and she picked her up to ck her and told me then that she could feel her knee jumping out of socket. Her dog has this, so she knew what to look for. But time went on and she hasnt done it anymore so I didnt think anymore about it. I actually forgot about it when I took her yesterday is why I didnt mention it. I had told my sister in law I would get him to ck it when I took her back. Well I didnt have to as he found it himself. He said sometimes it causes them lots of problems, even surgery sometimes, but sometimes they dont have much problems with it. So he said we'll just watch her and see how she does. But she still hasnt done it anymore and she runs around and jumps when she wants to, so I hope she dont start having much trouble with it. He didnt seem to think surgery is a good idea as long as their not showing much signs of problems, but said sometimes they will quit using their leg at all. So wish us luck with her leg. I would appreciate the thoughts and care from all here. All else checked out fine.

I had a yorkiepoo several years ago, and she would frequently run like that, off and on with 3 legs. We never thought anything of it, but evidently it didn't bother her cause she never quit using her leg.

LPs are very common with small dogs. Since she's not showing any painful signs i wouldn't worry too too much but try to keep jumping to a minimum. Don't let her jump off the couch or bed because that could aggrevate it. Also, if your on missing link, try getting the missing link plus for the glucosamine. it will help. Jodie gives it to Sissy i believe because she has small grade LPs

I use to give her missing link but the vet told me it was good but said omega, 3,6,9 was better. It is a capsule I get at walmart and just put it in her food. I posted about it a while back and sent a picture of what I buy. its only about 7 or 8 bucks for 100 capsules. he said give her one every other day. So I have some missing link in my fridge I need to throw away now since I purchased it in Jan and I put half of it in my freezer for good keeping I thought but since shes on this now, I'm gonna throw it all out and keep giving her the omega 3,6,9 capsules. thanks for the offer of help, much appreciated.

The omega 3,6,9 is really good for the coat. i suggested the missing link plus only for the glucosamine thats in it. if you want to add another supplement for hte knees you can give her people glucosamine that you buy in the supermarket or GNC. Ask your vet the proper dosage for Maggie's size. the glucosamine has been shown to be good for the joints and may help prevent future knee surgery.

ouch, well I understood this omega 3,6,9 was good for the joints too. Maybe I misunderstood. But isnt the omega 3 good for the joints as well as the coat?

Default We have had alot of experience with LP

We had a little chihuahua that had LP,luxaiting patella, she had a cute little hop when she was 7 weeks old, we thought it was just her being cute, turned out that she had LP, well needless to say she underwent several major surgeries for it, she just recently passed away at 11 years old in early december. she had so many health issues. We ended up spending about 20 grand on her over the years if not more.

my sister in law has a yorkie that will be 11 years old the 22nd of this month. She just had surgery for tumors on her, I think ovaries. And she just got spayed then. I think it was the end of January. she also has LP but has never had a serious problem with it. sorry you lost your baby and I know my brother and his wife were both upset about sassy surgery this year. But he said at her age even if she started having trouble with the LP he wouldnt do surgery at this age. But I think she has it in her hip joints now. But she still running and playing really good for her age. I know, I would be all upset if something happened to maggie now. I'm still sorry for your loss and sending you prayers for coping with it. I know it has to be hard.

i don't believe its good for the joints. from what i've studied and from what i've been told the fatty acids are really only used for the coat and skin problems. Tho maybe the one you have has other ingredients in it that would benefit the joints?

your right. I dont see anything on it thats good for joints. But its not like old joint pain, it jumps out of joint so I wouldnt think gyclosimine (SP) would actually help it much anyway. But i'm sure the vet will advise me on what to give her for it if she needs it. He didnt say the omega 3,6,9 was good for it, thats what he said was as good or better than missing link when I was there before talking about the hair and skin care and what I gave her for it. He didnt say anything about giving her anything for it. But thanks for the info. Now at least i'm aware. :-)

true, now that i think of it, your right. the glucosamine probably wouldn't be much help because its not like the joint is sore. The knee cap just isn't contained in the patella ridges as well as it should be. by what you described in your first post it doesn't sound like it bothers her too much right now, your lucky. She probably only has grade 1 LPs and its only in one knee. good luck with her

My thoughts are with you. I am sure she will be just fine. It is not an uncommon ailment for this breed and it may be so minimal that she won't have to have it corrected and will never have problems with it. The surgery generally yields very good results and it isn't a rare, risky procedure.
My guess would be that right now it is worrying you more than it is your little one. Keep us updated as you find out more.
