| getting my 10 week old puppy to wear a collar anyone have any suggestions on how to get my puppy to wear a collar? I bought her a very tiny, lightweight nylon collar, put it on her very loosely & she acts as if she is being punished! She immediately cowers, scoots on the floor, finds a corner to lay in & will not play, get up or anything! I have tried to just leave it on her, ignore her behavior, try to distract her......to no avail!!! HELP!!!

| well. Yorkies shouldn't wear a collar anyways.. they should wear a harness.. the pulling on their neck can cause a collapsed Trachea.. bad news... so maybe she would be more comfortable in a harness... if she is a puppy.. try cat harnesses oh and WELCOME TO YORKIE TALK!!! |

| Yeah i agree with the harness thing, unless it has a bell on it b/c she's small. But i only recommend the bell for only inside. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I think wearing collars is essential for identification purposes (never for leashing). My pets always have a Microchip AND a collar w/ a small id tag. The harness also has an id tag. The problem w/ microchips is that not everyone knows about them. If someone is ignorant of them, finds your dog and doesn't see the "usual" tag - they may be more inclined to keep the dog. If they see the more "common" tag, at least they may be motivated to return the pup, esp. when they see an owner's name etc. - it may garner some sympathy and some add'l understanding that this baby actually belongs to someone else. If you want your pup to wear a (safe) collar - just keep putting it on him, praise him, hold him, reassure. He will get used to it. DON'T take it off when he's whining/upset or this teaches him to do this IN ORDER to make you take it off. Take it off when he's calmed himself. Use it safely (perhaps just when going out?), fit it properly and it can be a great tool in terms of ID. Ann |

so do i!! romeo has a collar and a harness. he did not like it at first of course but i put it on him and he got used to it. when i would try to walk him with it i did not pull on his precious little neck!! that is just good common sense IMO. when he did not want to move we did not move but now he has no problem at all with it or his harness and he will be 10 weeks, too this friday.

No Longer a Member | Chloe wears a collar for her id tag also. I only walk her on a harness though. Put the collar on with only enough space to fit two fingers in for safety. Any more than that and it can get caught on things--including her own teeth! Just put it on and he'll get over it soon enough. If you give in to his sulking, he'll keep doing it. |

| Maybe you can try just putting the collar on her for 5 minutes at a time. And then keep increasing the amount of time that she wears it every day. Eventually maybe she will become used to it. My 2 are fine with their collars but I use harnesses to walk them and they are not crazy about the harnesses. I too just use their collars for their ID tags |

that is exactly what i did with romeo. at first it was off more than it was on but he started getting used to it. it takes time and patience but it was worth it because i knew i wanted him to have a tag on at all times.

| All my babies wear collars with a bell and an id tag, they wear them 24/7, the only time I take it off is during bath time and during brushing. I also take it off my females when they have litters. However I do not use it to walk them, I walk with a harness. Just leave it on him, he will get used to it. |

She's still little and there's so much to learn when you're little. Just try and make it a game. Put it on her and only leave it on for a min or two. That's what I do with puppies before they go to their new homes. Take it off and try a little later. She'll get used to it. If you get a harness for her do the same with that. Alot of puppies go through a period of being "brave" then around 12 wks they go through a "fear period" for a few weeks and then around 5-6 mos they get "brave & fearless". Just lots of comfort and love and she'll do just fine. You asked a very good question. They have very tender hearts and they can act like their feelings are just crushed sometimes.

| Collars I would put a cat collar on her/him. There are safety collars that break apart when the animal pulls too hard. I waited until my boys were older for their collars. They wear the collar 24/7. They have their rabies, dog licence, and an 800 number if found on their collar. When they go for walks, I use their harness, not their collar. I would wait until your puppy is older to put on a collar though...Right now the puppy probably is scared of everything.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | morgan has a collar with her tags on it as well. We leave it on inside so i can hear where she is. I don't walk her with it tho, she has many harnesses for that. I just slapped the collar on her and ignored her antics. if she wanted to play slug for an hour then by all means pretend you can't move with that collar on. She wasn't hurting herself so i ignored it. she gave up eventually and now is perfectly fine with it on.
