Cry Snoodles had her shots, but bad news too!

Snoodles had her Bordella booster plus her RAbies and 4 other booster shots and did fine! Gosh I was soooo worried, but she never even slept more or anything! The vet said he has never had a dog have a reaction to Bordella, and suspected it might have been the Rabies last time. He gave it to her anyway, and she did wonderfully! Now he will stagger the shots every other year. But said they have to get all the booster shots at a year to protect them.
The bad part is that she has a severe knee problem. Everytime she takes a step, the knee pops out. Her knee cap is on the side of her leg. This si both back legs, but the right one is more severe. He said to watch her, and when she gets to having too much pain he will have to do the surgery. The little bugger still jumps up and down furniture and runs like the dickens! He said it's just like us, we have pain, but don't always yell about it but just keep carrying on.. I feel sooo bad for her and it is scary to contemplate that kind of surgery at her small size. She weighed 3#1oz. Has any one of you had to have that done with your Yorkie and how did they come out?
Thanks! Pat

I'm very sorry your puppy has LP - It can be treated and there should be quite a few people here who have gone thru the surgery - if you need to talk - I know someone who's yorkie had both knees operated on before she turned 1 year - If you want - I can email her - Good luck - and I'm sorry for your baby -

THat is scary, but hate putting her under anesthesia. I feel sooo bad! Snoodles was one year old in January! Soo young to have to look forward to that!

This is so sad. Isn't this condition hereditary?

Hi - To answer the question - I don't believe it was both together - I'll email her right now and ask her to come here OK ? Her Gracie is now 5 or 6 years old but she was very young when they diagnosed her...it is scary... but your baby should be ok with treatment

My dog had to have surgery on his knee because of the same thing. He's a bigger dog though. The joint was popping in and out of the socket. It cost us $3000! Not fun, but he's fine now.

Confused

How much does it cost here in the states? I think it is different in different locals. I know the neutering/spaying are different prices in different locals. How old do the puppies have to be before this can be spotted? Can it just develope suddenly in an adult dog? Sylvia

My male has LP (luxating patella) and our vet detected it when he was 12 weeks. There are 4 levels of LP... 4 being the most severe. It is a degenerative condition. He has it in both knees, it is slight ( level 1 in one knee and 2 in the other). Our vet wants to do the surgery and correct both knees at the same time so that Tino only goes under anesthesia once, also because he believes that eventually both knees will end up arthritic, he'd like to fix them at the same time. The vet believes that I should have the surgery as soon as possible b/c its they heal better when they are younger, so I was going to have it done this summer, but have decided to wait. I love my vet and really do trust him, but I hate to put Tino through this when he doesnt exhibit any signs that it is affecting his quality of life. He shows absolutley no signs of pain or discomfort at all and he doesnt even do the "LP Hop" that dogs do to pop the kneecap back into place. The recovery time is extensive... about 8 weeks total. The price I was quoted is $1000 if our vet performs the surgery and $1800 if we go to the veterinary surgeon. There is a ton of info on the web about it. Hope this info helps! Also, from what I have gathered in talking to breeders before I got Bunny, no breeder can guarantee against LP.

I would always recommend a second and possibly a third opinion when it comes to any major condition or illness. Some vets are more knowledgeable than others about certain thing and it would obviously be best to go to a specialist who will know what is best for your dog. One of my dogs has a slight LP in one leg but he said almost all puppies have less stabel kneecapsand that they sometimes get betterwith age so she said we should just keep an eye on it at this point.

Luxating patellas are another ocdition that is common with yorkies and can occur even when there has been no LP in the parents or their ancesters. There is no test that can be done including DNA, so it is not something that breeders can prevent.

Confused

I'm not trying to start something here, these are just honest questions I have and I guess it doesn't have to be about LP, it could be about LS or sizes or even colors.

So if your puppy has a LP and you wanted to breed him/her, should you?
If your female throws a puppy that ends up with LP, should you breed her again?
If you can't predict it, if there's no guarantee(sp?) that a mom with LP will ever throw a pup that shows LP, why shouldn't you breed her?

My late Gracie had both knees done at once and she did fine! If you have to have a genetic problem, this is the best one you can have. I'm sorry she may have to have surgery, but she will be okay. Make sure you have an orthapedic vet do it though!

Can you tell me about Gracies recovery time and what was involved after the surgery since she had both knees done at once? Also what level was the LP when you decided to do it and what age was Gracie when you had it done?

Sorry for all of the questions, but I had posted that I wanted to wait bc it doesnt seem to be affecting Tino's quality of life and since he is only a year old, the orthopaedist said it would be okay to wait. I am just trying to make the most informed decision! Thank you!

I bred my female German Shepherd. Sheps are prone to hip dysplasia it is heriditary, dietary or to much activity can cause it. I researched her & the males bloodlines back 7 generations to make sure there was no HD. I was only able to trace it back because Zoie comes from a germany blood line with all titled dogs and the male had a 100pct american titled bloodline-many great champs in both and Zoies biggie a 3x world seiger. I also advised the new owners of my puppies to feed only a puppy large breed high quality for the first year-then can give adult large breed high quality, no grocery store garbage. I also advised them not to allow the dogs to jump out of vehicles for 1 year, no activity that could jolt the hip ball&socket in any major way for the first year while everything is soft and forming properly.

If I found 1 dog in either bloodline with HD I would not have bred the dogs. It is to much of a gamble to play with a life.If one knows there is any type of heriditary defect that causes pain and illness in their dogs bloodline , why would one want to take a chance giving it to more pups to suffer?

Hoping your pup feels better soon and if have surgery for a speedy recovery.
