roxie's home Her spaying went very well, her blood work all came out negative. I dropped her off yesterday around 8:45 and by the time i was at work (10) her surgery was already done, and she was recovering. The vet said she ate a lil last night, and some this morning. I asked about pain medicine, and he said she didnt need any, that she was back to her normal self. But now that I have her home, she doesnt want me to pet her, or come near her. She runs away, and it kinda makes me feel sad. Shes licking at her stitches some, but i tell her no and usually she stops. She ate a tiny tiny bit, probably like 4-5 pieces of dry food. and has been drinking water. I let her outside and the 1st thing she did was jump off the porch, its not far, but i know she doesnt need too. Her stitches he said were stainless steel, and said she shouldnt be able to get them out. Im just worried about her messing with them. I take her back next friday to have them out, and i cant wait. I just feel like if i touch her, I'll hurt her. Shes now trying to play a lil bit, and whining to go outside, but i think im gonna put her to bed so she can have a nice nap. I've also noticed shes very hesitant to sit down or lay down, she takes her time, i hope this isnt a problem. Her hair is so greasy looking, and i have no clue why. thats the 1st thing i noticed when i picked her up was how greasy the top of her head looked, hopefully i can give her a bath sometime next week. She also tried to poopie, but never did, so im gonna be watching for that, in hopes she does okay. But for now i think we are gonna take a nap, its a big day for the both of us! Also any comments or suggestions on how to make her more comfortable will be appreciated!

I know what you are going through Hi! I just went through this last week...so I feel your pain. Syd was just miserable the first 3 days after her surgery. She slept almost constantly and did the same things as yours with laying down and sitting very carefully. And she had trouble getting comfortable as well. I can assure you that she will be fine. On day 4 Syd woke me up by bringing me a toy as if to say "Mommy...I feel better now...lets play." Don't worry about her running from you. She will get over that too. She is probably just a little scared and confused right now. Yesterday her mom took her to the bad place, left her there, and when she woke up she was missing parts and in pain. Since we can't explain to our babies that this is for their own good...I'm sure that this is very disturbing to them. If she is licking or messing with her stitches ask your vet for one of the plastic cone collars. We had to do that for Syd (especially once the stitches started itching). You don't want her pulling those out! Lastly...I noticed the same greasy head thing as you and wondered about it as well. Does anybody know? p.s. Once her stitches start itching...it was recomended to me to put hydrocortozone (sorry spelling?) cream around the stitches...but not on them. This should sooth them.

Hello...I'm so glad her surgery is behind her and now she can heal and be her old self in no time! My vet told me to put neosporin on the incision site...that that would help the incision heal and heal better. (4 times a day) I did that and can hardly notice a scar anymore. Also, if you're worried about her licking the incision, you could get a onesie to put on her. I did that with Maddie and it was comfortable, but made it impossible for her to get to the stitches. I just cut a small hole for the tail and it worked great. I feel bad that she didn't get any pain meds...the poor little thing has been through major surgery, and I think they should give them pain meds to get them through the first few days after surgery. Maddie had pain meds for 5 days. If she seems to be really uncomfortable, ask you vet for something. There's no need she should suffer when pain meds are available. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and Maddie sends puppy kisses!

thanks for all the information. She has 3 sets of stitches, 2 that dissolve, and the other that are stainless steel, which i thought was a lil weird he used those. She just woke up from a pretty long nap (3 hours) and we went outside on this beautiful day to potty. I wish she was all better so we could take a walk in the park, but im sure that will be a while. I really do hate he didnt send home any pain medication, that kinda bothers me some. But if i noticed her acting strange i will probably call about that. Also She needs to be groomed so bad, i was wondering how long i need to wait before having her bathed and giving her a trim??

groomed The vet didn't give me any pain pills either. Just the pain shot right after the surgery. Honestly she didn't seem to be in all that much pain, though. Just sick to her stomach from being put under and uncomfortable. That is wierd about them using those stitches. I'm sure the vet had good reason though. Maybe b/c she is an active dog? I specifically requested (against the recomendation of my vet) to have the disolvable stiches. They told me not to bathe her for 10 days...it's been 10 days today, but we are waiting until Sunday just to be safe. She is VERY stinky.

Isn't it taerrible what we feel for our poor little babies? Snoodles had the steel stitches too, and had to take her back to get them out. I was lucky, though she never bothered them at all. It won't be long and she will be right back to her old self! They bounce back lots quicker than we do. I think they don't know they are suppose to hurt that long! Good Luck! Pat

I forgot to mention in my last post...I'm not for sure about the greasy head, but this is a possibility. When Maddie had her surgery done, I was told they would be putting ointment in her eyes to keep them from drying out during the surgery. She was quite a greasy mess when I brought her home too, and I suppose she rubbed her eyes and spread the ointment onto her hair. I was told not to bathe her until the stitches were out. After a few days when she was feeling better, I bathed her head and face and didn't get the rest of her wet. I don't know if it made her feel better, but it made me feel better. LOL

| If you think she's in pain how about 1/2 a baby asprin. My vet said to give that to Bella if she is in pain after her vaccinations

I have not had Chai spayed yet, but I just had my cat spayed and they used a "glue" on the incision site externally and dissolvable stitches inside. I thought that was interesting. They gave me three syringes with pain medication for the three days after surgery and she wore a cone for a few days until I felt sorry enough for her to take it off. I think the onsie is a great idea instead of the cone because it is really not the greatest. I hope my Chai doesn't have to spend the night when she has her surgery. Was someone there with Roxie through the night? I know they are pretty out of it, but I still would feel better in case something happened that they were being watched. Who else had to have their puppy spend the night? Glad it's over for Roxie and that she is recovering.
