Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Weight limit for letting outside w/o supervision? I let my Wylie outside (7.5 pounds) without supervision bc his size is quite safe. What do you all think is the smallest you can safely allow in your (fenced obviously) yard without worrying about hawks, owls, flying things that would scoop up your baby? 4 pounds? 3 pounds? Ann |

| I let all of my zoo outside unsupervised. They have a fenced backyard. If anything tried to come in my yard the bigger dogs would stop them, including a thief. LOL.

| If I lived in an area where there were hawks I wouldnt let my 10 lb yorke out by himself. There was a story not too long ago about a hawk picking up a weiner dog and they are bigger than yorkies

| I wouldn't trust my baby around birds of prey unsupervised for anything. Even if an eagle trys to pickup you dog, and can't; the dog will be injured or killed. Watch those sometimes unfriendly skys LOL

| We have hawks flying around all the time and try to get our chickens. We have actually seen them circling over our baby goats. I would never let Annie outside unsupervised because of this. Kasey & Annie |

I've told this many times so to keep it short...A hawk flew down to take a closer look at Gus but luckily I was right there. They are silent and very FAST. Be careful!!

| With all the thefts lately and dangers from nature I wouldn't let any of mine outside alone...fence or no fence, big dog or no big dog. Even if a bird of prey couldn't lift your dog off of the ground just think of the damage it could do just by grabbing it with their talons or pecking it with their beak...not to mention dropping it from mid air if it couldn't take off. I've been bit by a large parrot...I can't imagine the damage a bite from a bird of prey could inflict. Just too much could happen and I would never forgive myself if I wasn't there to try and protect my boyz. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I am SO glad I asked this question. Since Wy became an adult, we pretty much let him in the back yard (fenced w/ adobe) to do his business. We really thought that his size (7.5) was beyond what a predatory bird would grab. THANK you all for clearing this up. I guess I've been very lucky. Thanks also for not judging me - I really thought he was okay in our yard. Ann |

| with all the terrible things, I agree, you should always keep your eyes on your baby... I would hate for something to happen to him... The only one of mine who is outside alone is the lab... and she only visits for a while...

so do we and i was just joking with my husband about this the other day!! have you guys seen that commercial for a video game where the guys are standing around in the woods and are playing with a gun and one of them points it at the other and he shrinks the guy!! he starts running a big bird swoops in and carries him off and they are standing there stunned!! i told him that could happen to romeo he is so little a big bird would see him as a snack and try and pick him up! and then you have people stealing these dogs, too so that is another thing to worry about. my baby will never ever go outside anywhere alone! | |

| I don't know, I guess I feel you can become overprotective with your pets and children. I never wanted to become either one. My fenced yard is perfectly safe. My Belgian Malinois is Schuzthund trained and can take any grown man down in the bite suit. I feel completely confident that we are all safe with him around. With all the noise and commotion coming from out backyard I honestly can't see a hawk thinking "there is lunch if I can just get past all those big animals". My neighbor next door lets his chickens run free. He has lived here most of his life and has never lost a chicken to the hawks. He also owns 5 big dogs, goats, horses (I guess a mini zoo just like I have). LOL

| I posted this on the poll question about leaving your little ones outside by themselves but I thought I would also post it here. Living in Arizona, I have never let my gang out by themselves but probably wouldn't in Philadelphia either ...heck they had a nesting pair of Peregrine hawks in downtown Philly a number of years ago. My sister sent me the headlines. Along with the hawks & owls you have to be careful of rattlesnakes and coyotes...fun living in the desert. http://www.hawksaloft.org/faq.html Can a raptor carry away/eat my pet? Raptors hunt a variety of prey, including rodents, birds, rabbits, snakes, and insects. And yes, large raptors, such as Red-tailed Hawks and Great Horned Owls, can indeed kill a small pet. We have received dozens of inquiries about 6-pound dogs, 10 pound dogs, 10? pound dogs, etc., all the way up to a 60 pound dog. There is no specific cut-off weight at which your pet?s safety is guaranteed. If the size of your dog or cat is similar to or not much larger than naturally occurring raptor prey, there is a risk. If you are concerned about your dog or cat, the best advice we can give you is to keep your pet indoors or supervise them closely outdoors. There are several good reasons to keep cats indoors. Outdoor cats face considerable danger from vehicle traffic, as well as harrassment from larger animals, such as dogs and coyotes. We think these threats are responsible for a much greater share of mortality than raptors. In addition, outdoor cats are responsible for killing millions of wild birds every year. Turnabout may not seem fair play when it comes to a raptor threatening our beloved cat, but by allowing our cats to roam free, we are exposing them to this uncommon danger. When it comes to dogs, we know it is often necessary to keep them outdoors. If you live in an area with a substantial population of large hawks and owls, perhaps you can protect your dog by providing an outdoor shelter or covered run. As pet-owners ourselves, we at Hawks Aloft share your concern for the safety of your pet. But while keeping your pets secure, we encourage you to take an extra moment and appreciate the remarkable wildlife that also shares your space. Like our faithful dogs and cuddly cats, backyard birds and wildlife can greatly enrich our lives

I remember one night, I was sitting outside with the gang under the patio cover and I stood up and walked out just as a big old owl was swooping down on the gang and I stepped in front of him and one of my little ones...scared the "you know what" right out of me.

Your story is similar to mine. Thank God luck was on our side. That is a good link, thanks for posting it. When I was looking for info after it happened I could find very little about this. Gus sends wags to his competition.
