| New to the site...need help with a name Hello! I am new to the site. We have a Yorkie mix, a Yorkie, and a large dog as well. We had no trouble at all picking names for our other 2 dogs. But our newest addition...well it has been weeks and we just cannot decide. She is already grown and came to us with the name Tatum. I was going to keep it as it is what she comes to (the breeder called her Tater Tot.) However...my husband just hates the name. OUr other dogs are Lola Belle and Blitz. I LOVE the names Layla and Lily but Layla sounds just like Lola and my almost 2 year old son cannot say Lily. My mom called me and had the idea of the name Mademoiselle because it means "Miss" lol so we can atleast call her something for now. I also adore the name Ginger but we used to have a Yorkie with that name so I cannot use it again. Should I just keep her name as Tatum or try something new and see if she adjusts? Does anyone have any name suggestions? Her photo is on my profile. She is the female Yorkie with the name "Mademoiselle". Thanks in advance! |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | First of all, welcome to YT. Tatum-Tater Tot-Layla-Lily-Mademoiselle-Ginger is adorable. Not that it matters, but some people who change names try to get one that sounds like the one they're used to, but the only one I can think of close to Tatum is "Taylor." "Mademoiselle" is cute but long. You would end up calling her Maddie. Nothing wrong with that, though. I'll bet others will have some good ideas.

| WELCOME TO YORKIE TALK I love Tater-Tot. However, I would suggest working with your family and coming up with a name that works for everyone. With us, we usually start calling them a name and it sticks. I only "pre-named" one of the kids and that was Chizziewink. |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | How 'bout Taylor or Tara? That way, you would still have the same first syllable that she is used to hearing? (Love Tater Tot by the way ...) |

| Welcome! I am with everyone on sticking with something that sounds like her current call. You don't want her to have an identity crisis (just kidding.) Taylor , Tara, Taren, maybe. Have you looked at a baby names book? Also, I recently googled dog names and got a list of the most popular Yorkie names. Maybe there would be something there. We are in the same predicament. We are keeping one of our female's pups and, although I had no trouble with the first two, I just come up with anything. My daughter has been calling him Edward, because of a character in a book she loves, but I'm not crazy about that for sure. You can also consider names in her bloodline, if you know them. Just know that whatever her "official" name is, she probably will be called other things anyway (check out the nickname thread...too cute) and make sure her "official" name is as grand as it should be for the great Yorkshire Terrier breed. Our Edward is ending up "Zoe's Toy King Edward Anthony." Have fun with it! Good luck

| I have read that dogs only respond to the sound of the last sylable. So I think you can name her anything that ends in 'um' like peyton (the only one I could think of off the top of my head).

| Welcome to YT. I'd go with Missy instead of madomeselle. When changing a name, use both names for a while. Say the new name and then add the old name. they will soon come to the new name, anticipating that you are going to say the old name next. |

That is why we have beel calling her Madem. It ends with the same sound as Tatum. It is the only other name she responds to. LOL. But atleast she responds to it. I personally do not mind Tatum...but my husband realllllly dislikes it. I love the name Holly so I think maybe I will try calling her Madem Holly and then maybe eventually she will get used to just holly LOL. | |
