Default Ear Mites?

What are ear mites? I took Coco to the vet and he said to watch out for those. He checked her ears and said they look fine but if I notice brown little things, to bring her in. It was her first appointment so naturally I was listening more than asking. What are they and how are they treated? Where do dogs gets mites from?

I am not sure exactly what they are but our Gracie had them when we got her. We noticed this about a week later. Inside the ears you will see black or brown. Gracie itched at her ears all the time and caused them to bleed. The vet said the reason they itch is because they can hear them moving around. The vet put medicine on Gracie's back that would be absorbed through the skin to get rid of them. So could not give her a bath for a few days. Also gave us medicine to put inside her ears to muffle the noise to keep her from itching. Since treated we have had no problems.

Was the medicine expensive? She doesn't scratch that much but I have noticed that when she scratches, it's her ears. I tried looking down her ear but didn't see anything. Would they be noticeable?

Ear mites are awful for the doggies. My pug had them once and it was awful for him. I think they are contagious and they can get them from another dog if you go to a dog run. You will notice a VERY bad smell and thick dark brown waxy stuff in the ears. If you nitice this take your pup to the vet and they will put some of the wax under the scope and they will see them crawling around. The vet can give you drops to cure it.

Earmites are little microscopic organism that can live in your dog or cat's ear feeding off of wax. They cause the dog ear to itch and inflame.

Would I notice them or see them well? Meaning are they visible or should I judge by her scratching her ears?

You would be alerted by scratching yes, but a better indicator is that awful smell. You will know it when you smell it. You can't see them.

I can't remember but the medicine was not that expensive. I am guessing we paid $40.00 for the ointment to put in her ears and the medicine on her back that soaked in to get rid of them. Well worth it and a must to get rid of . Yes, the vet does have to look under the mircroscope to see them, but you should be able to see brownish/black from wax that another posted. Keep good watch on her and if continues to itch make a vet appt.

When I first brought Cordelia home from the breeder we took her to the vet the same day to have her checked out. Her ears smelled really bad. They gave us some ear drops to put in her ear and they cleaned out her ears really good. There is an ear wash you can buy, I’m not sure if prevents ear mites. I really couldn't see them in her ear when the vet showed them to me, but there was brown wax stuff.

No, No, not the whole body, Sorry to scare you! It is only from the ears. Another way to find out (just go this info from a post a week ago) it to take some wax out with a q-tip carefully and put it on black construction paper. Apparently you will be able to see the light colored mites crawling around. Don't stress too much about this, especially if you have a puppy that is not around a lot of dogs. My vet too warned about this, they do it just as a precaution.

Coco hasn't been around any other dogs, but I do take her shopping or to petsmart if I have to go. Ok I will try the wax on construction paper thing and see if I see any mites.

In severe cases you will see black or dark brown crusty wax in your dog's ear canal. Plus you can smell an odor.

my vet told me to scratch behind their ear if they take the same foot and start to scratch then they have mites. the brown black stuff looks like coffee grounds. ear mites are a form of scabes or mange. you cant see them unless under a micrscope. i don't know about the black paper. they use ivymec to kill them the vet has it. You put it in there mouth. other dogs and cats can catch them from your dog.

Don't dig around too much as they can get hurt. If the wax is there, it will be front and center, you will not have to look for it. Be careful and let us know the outcome. Hope no crawlies!
