There is no such thing as a teacup Yorkie. Breeders often use this term for $$$$$. Welcome to YT!!! Last edited by AMD; 03-13-2007 at 05:50 PM.

In show and registration terms, there's no such thing as a "teacup," but everyone compliments me on my "teacups," too. I just ignore it.

i second that.. it becomes a problem with breeders use the term in order to get more money for a smaller pup... a lot of people will want a "tea cup" and not be aware of the health issues with such a small dog and will pay the big bucks... a yorkie is a yorkie... why the need to distinguish that yours is small?

People get "heated" up when you mention teacup because, if you will look at the AKC standard for a yorkie, the dog must not exceed 7 pounds. We all know there are breeders out there and then there are breeder wanna bes. In all the research I have done, you will find that the conscientious breeders (those breeding for AKC standard), tell you that red flags should go up when a breeder tells you they have teacups or micro-mini's. There is no such thing. It is just a matter of having a small pup in a litter and the breeder thinks that he/she can get more money for the pup because they are "special". This is just a sales tactic. In fact, if you will research, you will find these pups are more inclined to have health problems that are not generally apparent until the dog gets a little older. I think it is cruel and unjust to treat animals in this manner for a dollar. Good breeders, sure they ask more money for their pups, but they are breeding to prevent genetic problems and that is why they have good bloodlines in their breeding programs. To me, when you purchase from a reputable breeder, you are not only buying a quality pup, but you are buying that breeder as well.
