| Yorkies and cats... I'm posting it for my mom... She has a 10-month old Yorkie Charlie and a cat.The cat is a female, not-altered, about 3-4 years old. Since she got the puppy, they had to be separated because the cat beats the crap out of the poor dog . Charlie runs up to her and wants to play but she claws at him. The instant my mom turns away, she jumps on top of the dog and beats him. They have to kept in different parts of the house and it's been like that from the beginning... The cat was ok with my mom's other dog (a big one) but she HATES the Yorkie... Is there any way to make her at least tolerate Charlie? She's being punished all the time - usually it's a time out and my mom yells at her too, but nothing seems to help ... Anyone has had a similar situation? My mom got to the point she tried to find a home for the cat but no success...She loves them both, what to do??

| I still live at home. When I got my Yorkie - my mom's cats HATED her, but they are now tolerating her and realize that she's there to stay. Your mom's cat is probably just offended that there is another animal there (who I would assume is getting a TON of attention more than the cat, hey - no shame in that - I'm the same way...)... My little yorkie goes after the cats and it is HILARIOUS! I yell at the cats when they swipe at her and they've learned to tolerate her. Both are females and aren't fixed... I really think it's a time thing - We've always had two cats, when one would pass we'd get another - the old cat usually took a few months to adjust but would eventually love the new kitty... I'm sure it will be the same with her pupp, she's SO excited about the kitty but the kitty is jealous/upset... give it time Keep me updated!

| similar situation that is funny because i have a cat...he's about the same size as both my yorkies...Teddy, my male will go up to him, tail a waggin' with a toy in his mouth expecting Mr. Kitty to just play with him, but my cat is very temperamental. He's been altered since last year....so he's not as kind as he should be sometimes. I haven't separated them but a few times, because the cat isn't one who will back off, not even if an adult plays with him, and he gets rough, he keeps coming back for more.... Teddy has pretty much learned to just play dead or lay on his back and be submissive to the cat, which is pretty awful considering he's the dog!! but, he's learned the kitty is mean! yorkiemomma7 |
