| Distilled Water? I have been thinking about giving my dogs distilled water for eye boogies. For those of you who give your dogs distilled water, is it safe to keep them on it all the time, or should I give them regular water every now and then. I have heard about distilled water leaching minerals from the body or something like that. I have also read that that is a myth. Joan |

| All mine drink distilled water, with an occasional bottle of spring water if I run out. I don't even drink the water down here. It does help on staining.

Distilled water is water that is nothing but water. That means it has no ions, no minerals, and no hardness. Distilled water is NOT safe by itself to be used with animals or for drinking. It will suck the ions out of any animal. Distilled water can be mixed with other waters and used. By mixing it with hard water for example, a water with lower hardness can be obtained. Distilled water is mostly sold for cleaning contact lenses because it is just water. There are a few cases where distilled water can be used as is for animals. Certain crustaceans such as triops and fairy shrimp can be hatched in distilled water.

| My maltese needed the distilled water for the staining and since the Yorkie drinks out of the same water dish.........he gets distilled too. It has all the minerals and vitamins taken out so it is just wet stuff. But I fell that the dog food today on the market can really provide all the minerals and vitamins they both need. I do add a little unfiltered apple cider to their water too for the staining and was amazed at the improvement of both their tear staining and eye boogies as you call them (LOL). I have seen a "tremendous" difference in both of their eyes! Hubby and I have been drinking ONLY (and I mean ALWAYS) distilled water since 1985!!!! That's 22 years!

We use a high-quality bottled water that we drink ourselves. We get it in those 5-gallon Alhambra-type jugs and just fill up the pets' water dishes. Thankfully, Yorkies don't drink much.

| I wouldn't let them drink distilled water. I use distilled to clean their eyes out, especially after a walk, but that's the only time I use it. |

| I just found this on the internet. I guess it's a toss up all depends on who is promoting. Know what I mean? Just posted it to "round" out the conversation on the subject! Environmental Health Issues Water Why You Should Be Drinking Distilled Water 1. Chemicals: There are now more than 60,000 different chemicals on the market today, with approximately 1,000 more being added each year. In one way or another, many of these chemicals find their way into our water. Today we may be drinking the residues from fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and industrial wastes, etc. But, distilled water is virtually pure water... free from all unwanted contaminants. And a Pure Water Home Distiller is the most effective, efficient way to produce distilled water! 2. Chemical Combinations: As if the above mentioned chemicals weren?t enough, many these chemicals interact to form potentially dangerous combinations, some that can have accumulative effects. For example: Chlorine, commonly used in water treatment, can react with humic acid to form Chloroform... a substance now linked to cancer. Distilling the water eliminates these hazardous combinations. And a Pure Water Home Distiller assures you of good, clean, virtually pure water! 3. Outdated Treatment: It is estimated that nearly 55% of the nation?s population live in areas where water treatment facilities are inadequate or non-existent. Furthermore, much of the equipment used to test water for purity is not sophisticated enough to detect many of the potentially dangerous chemicals. Distilled water is the answer. And a Pure Water Home Distiller starts where municipal water treatments fail! 4. Antiquated Distribution: Even if today?s water treatment facilities were able to completely purify water, it would become re-contaminated as it passed through the old, leaky and outdated water mains. But a Pure Water Home Distiller guarantees you of having a ready supply of clean, safe water for drinking and cooking! 5. Standard Of Purity: Distilled water is a standard of purity in many health-related areas, including hospitals, doctor?s offices, nursing homes and even government offices. It has applications for intravenous feeding, inhalation therapy, prescriptions and baby formulas. Now, a Pure Water Home Distiller makes this standard of purity available to everyone in their own home! 6. Odor/Taste: Distilled water is free of odor and taste as water is meant to be. Any food or drink mixed with distilled water will taste better. And a Pure Water Home Distiller assures you of distilled water without any odor or taste! 7. A Natural Process: Distillation is natures process of water purification. It is the single most effective method of water purification known today. The water is boiled creating steam, and any impurities are left behind in the boiling chamber. The steam then rises to the condensing coils where it is cooled and converted to pure distilled water. It is simple, inexpensive and a common sense way to insure that you and your family will not be exposed to the unwanted chemicals, pollutants, and other impurities in the water you drink. And a Pure Water Home Distiller is the most effective, economical way to obtain distilled water! Source: Aquapure Distillation

LOL. No, as I said I'm no expert. A quick search of the Web the other day turned up sites that said it wasn't wise to drink it over a prolonged period of time. However, your experience, your article and others I found searching today, say otherwise. I don't think we'll get to the bottom of it on a Yorkie forum. I'm going to ask both my doctor and my vet. Of course, it probably depends on which articles they read as well!

I agree, it all depends on what you read and who you ask!!!! I found some negative sites about distilled water and I found some positive sites! Kind of like spank your child /no don't spank your child ; eat bacon /don't eat bacon ; eat eggs /don't eat eggs!!!! I will say that my husband's urologist does not agree with drinking distilled water but he also is against herbs and vitamins (oh this is a whole new thread). Vet says it's good! Both are doctors. Hmmmmm, wonder which articles they have been reading!! Our Primary Doctor says distilled is good. Still not sure but still using distilled!!! But thanks for your input and information, it did make me do a little more research on the matter! LOL
