My First Day at this Site! Hey Everyone, I am new to this site and I am so glad that I found it. I will be receiving my Yorkie baby boy on April 4th and I am trying to get things straight before welcoming him to my house. I have never owned a Yorkie before but I have been dying to be a mommy for a Yorkie for the last 12 years...Finally I got my opportunity this year and I am counting the days down till April 4th... Now, before having him over, could you guys please tell me what type of must haves should I have at my house? I am planning to buy a crate - as that would be my training method and pee-pee pads and so on. But I am wondering what would be the best way to feed this puppy? Is there a specific food type you could suggest? Can you guys please give me some heads up on items that you think will be useful before welcoming the puppy home? I am so looking forward to hearing from you all! misilmisil

Hi Welcome to YT. I free feed mine Royal canine, and they get a tablespoon of canned pedigree twice a day. Be sure to have some Karo syrup or honey on hand in case he doesnt eat well the first few days. It's important to keep thier blood sugar level up. Monitor the food carefully until you are confident that he is getting enough to eat. They need a few toys, and a warm quiet place to sleep. Those are the basics. Of course they sky is the limit when it comes to spending on these guys.

WOW! You guys are so nice and helpful! I feel so lucky and glad to find people who love to talk about Yorkies and provide good tips! People around me all have big doggies so they are sort of making fun of me for getting such a small doggie. However, I dont care what everbody thinks, Yorkies are my passion and it has been my dream for a long time. Now couple other questions that jumps to my mind: 1. At what month should Yorkies be neutered/spayed? 2. Is it true that Yorkie males get trained easier than Yorkie females? 3. Is it true that Yorkies can be litter box trained? As I said, I am so very new to this concept and I appreciate all insightful feedback. Thanks, Isil (future mom of Roscoe)

This is what I did with both my Yorkie girls and it works perfectly. (I've had 40 years of raising dogs and being foster mom to lots of pupsters.) I bought a doggie fence that's 2'x16' a wire crate and attached the fence to each side of the "front" of the crate......leaving the crate outside of the fence to give more room inside and taking off the door or tieing it back to the fence. I put a soft plush crate cushion that I made up myself (cheaper and nicer) add a nice soft blanket and covered the crate with a blanket to make more den-like. I attached a water bottle to the side of the fence, put a wee-wee pad at the oposite end of the crate food and water, put in a soft squeek toy and a small femur bone. You can boil that bone first and take out the marrow and cut off any gristle and meat from the outside. I take the puppy outside to potty and play every hour. I say go potty and when they do I praise like the devil. Then play with a ball and make sure they run and play for at least 10 minutes. The wee-wee pad is for when I don't get to them in time, and for night time. I never allowed run of the house at all. When I would sit down at night to watch TV. I would have her on the sofa with me with a chew bone and toy. Never allowed off the sofa. Just keep taking them outside to potty and run. Doesn't take long before they know the routine and feel safe with it as well. They got cooked breakfast at 7, snack of dried fruit at 11:00, cottage cheese and plain yogurt mixed together at 1:00, cooked dinner at 5:00 and steel cut oatmeal cooked in either chicken or beef broth at 9:00. No more eating after that. TAken outside right after each meal. Never sleep with a puppy either. Don't move their pen around. Let it always stay in the same place and on a bare floor. This is how I got my girls totally house trained. Even when they were allowed to run around in the house at 6 months old for awhile here and there, I was always right behind them every second. When I knew they could be trusted in the house around 8 months old, I still kept an eagle eye on them and they still slept in their own beds but without the fence, and doggie gate up at both doors out of the breakfast/kitchen area. They continued to use the wee-wee pad at night if needed and during the day if it was pouring rain. The pads are such a blessing when we travel with the motor home or in hotels. I don't relish going outside at night or early morning in strange places. The fence is also a blessing. It goes with us and is used when we pic-nic, eat outside in RV parks or just sitting outside at friends homes if they don't have a fenced yard. My girls started sleeping with us when they were almost two years old, and we have never had any "accident" so to speak. I don't believe in accidents anyway. If any pottying goes on in the house or bed it's because they are not fully house trained. I hope you find what works for you and your new addition.

| Ask the breeder Hi, You might as the breeder if she has an information sheet she gives to new owners. I breed and give each person a new puppy care sheet and tips on potty training. I will email it to them if they want it before they actually pick the puppy up, so they will know what I have been doing with them and what they need to pick up. Congrats on getting a Yorkie--you wont be dissappointed!! And Welcome to YT!!!

Welcome and congratulations on finally having your puppy dreams come true!!! It's better to wait until close to a year to have him neutered so that they can pull out any remaining baby teeth at the same time. Yorkies tend to retain baby teeth and so end up with a double row of teeth - that can lead to tooth decay and bad breath - so they need to be pulled. I can't think of any item that hasn't already been mentioned that you'll need right away. Just relax and enjoy your pup! They grow up too fast. Definitely check out the Health & Diet section for suggestions on food. Bottom line - don't feed him anything you would find in a grocery store. Good luck!
