Animal Smiley 019 new puppies - weight - tail docking

We had five babies this morning. I am curious and cannot find good weights on yorkie pups? I am also curious if their weight will drop as a human does. I am concerned with the size of the litter and when I should consider supplementing if they dont thrive.

Just new mom worries. They are 4, 4, 5, 6, and 6 oz. They all look very healthy and shiny. The one that looks the smallest (no.3) I keep putting him on a teat as I think he has a maneuvering problem.

Also, I am wondering about tail docking - It seems very mean, their tails are as big around as their legs (and as long)

It's considered cruel and it's illegal to dock here in UK and I must say they look gorgeous with full tails.

Our two girls Gypsy Rose and Gizzie Chavi have their full tails and they are very proud of them. It is illegal for the breeder to dock the tails in Wales - it must be carried out by a vet. I would say that maybe more have undocked tails over here now in recent years but I still had to phone a few breeders 2 years ago when searching for a yorkie to find a good one who didn't dock as that was what we wanted. Our previous two yorkies had docked tails and they looked very cute too! (in those days nearly all had docked tails, they would have been 17 years old now). I may be wrong but I suspect that in the USA most potential buyers expect the tails docked? Ana xx

I dont think it is illegal yet I think that it is thought of as cruel and frowned on and only vets can do it. Lucy's tail is undocked and I prefer it that way. I know that in the US, to show the tail must be docke but in the UK that is not the case. Our breeder asked us if we wanted her tail docked so we had the choice on yes or no (we were waiting for her litter so it would have been done v early)

It is illegal I_love_lucy in UK unless done for medical reasons by a vet.

The royal college of vetinary surgeons had this to say

Quote:
The Royal College has for many years been firmly opposed to the docking
of dogs' tails, whatever the age of the dog, by anyone, unless it can be
shown truly to be required for therapeutic or truly prophylactic.

Docking cannot be defined as prophylactic unless it is undertaken for
the necessary protection of the given dog from risks to that dog of
disease or of injury which is likely to arise in the future from the
retention of the entire tail. The test of likelihood is whether or not
such an outcome will probably arise in the case of that dog if it is not
docked. Faecal soiling is not for this purpose a disease or injury,
and its purported prevention by surgical means cannot be justified.

Similarly, docking cannot be described as prophylactic if it is
undertaken merely on request, or just because the dog is of a particular
breed, type or conformation. Council considers that such docking is
unethical.

Docking a dogs' tail for reasons which are other than truly therapeutic
or prophylactic is capable of amounting to conduct disgraceful in a
professional respect. In the event of disciplinary proceedings being
brought in respect of tail docking, it shall be open to the RCVS by
evidence to prove, and the Disciplinary Committee on such evidence to
find, that any therapeutic or prophylactic justification advanced for
the docking in question is without substance. If such a finding is
made, the Disciplinary Committee may proceed to consider and to decide
whether in the circumstances the Veterinary Surgeon who undertook that
docking knew, or ought to have known, that such a purported
justification is without substance.
For the avoidance of any doubt, any instance of tail docking which is
found to have been undertaken for reasons which were not truly
therapeutic or prophylactic will necessarily constitute an unacceptable
mutilation of the dog, which, if carried out by a Veterinary Surgeon who
knew or ought to have known of the lack of true justification, would
almost certainly be considered to be conduct disgraceful in a
professional respect.'
And Recent research by independant bodies has shown that neonates are HYPERsensitive rather than HYPOsensitive as has been widely believed. Neonates have an intact sensory central nervous system that does not have descending modular pathways that act as pain blocks seen in adults. Research has also shown that the memory of neonatal pain can affect the animal in its adult life. Symptoms include decreased pain threshold, anxiety, social disorders and aggression.

I didn't realise it had to be for medical reasons (wonder why we were offered it ??!!) I was just making the point that the opinion differs between the US and UK and the fact that in the US yorkies must have docked tails for showing. So it might be expected slightly more in the US. Don't get me wrong, I would love Lucy just as much with a docked tail, but Im glad its not

Illegal in Denmark too - and it's been so for quite some time - it's great to see all the beautiful tails wagging in the parks and on the beach
A picture where you can see Kalis tail before I cut the hair short (due to winter and snow, she got ice in the hairs when walking):

I go for the natural look - also in humans btw - no fake boobies here - difference is a blessing!

Wow! I didn't realize there was such a diverse group here. Love the pic kewtee - it is a good seller on long tails Now I have a delima (I had the same problem with my sons ) Unfortunately I lost that battle to the power of possible peer problems. Maybe I can make a stand here, as I have always been opposed to elective surgeries (with exception to spay, neuter, tubal, v). Although the parents are registered, I do not care to be a breeder - this will probably be our only litter. I am expecting my husband to let me keep them all (he is a little resistant as of yet), so money is not really a driving factor. I have three days to decide.

It does seem harsh to dock their tails but there is a bloodless method, and it is said to be painless. Have it done by the vet. The one major thing you need to consider is that if you do sell, most people are looking for the Yorkie that falls within the standards. My litter just turned 6 weeks we had their tails done, because more people wanted it that way. There are people that don't care but those are rare in the US. Good luck with the babies, they all sound like they are a good weight. Don't forget to give mommy calcium, that is a big litter.

Thanks Yorkie Love - I have been giving her a tbl of cottage cheese and 3 tbl of goats milk for the past 3 or 4 weeks, plus I dropped her back to puppy food (canned - so I can watch her eat) and keep dry down all the time.

If you decide, definetly get it done as soon as you can. The blood flow is a lot less when they're little. I personally have two boys without their tail and another that came from Germany with tail, and to tell you the truth, the tail is adorable. So much expression is relayed with it. But if you are going to sell here in the USA, truthfully, probably more people want one without a tail, don't know why, but I guess we're a little more hung up on standards. But what really is standard, they're born with one, no? When I was looking to buy, I came across a breeder who didn't dock the tail and I wasn't turned off by it but then they said the they like the "natural" feel and then they also told me that they hadn't had any of the shots either, "natural". That told me that they were just CHEAP! They didn't want to put any money into the pup. Needless to say, I didn't go look. Good luck with whatever you decide...Theresa & The Boys

I know what you mean. Once we got a kitten - I asked if it was weaned, they asked 'what is that'. I said 'do they drink milk from a bowl?' He replied 'we haven't had any milk around here for a long time.' (i took the kitten.)

I will be taking the babies for their shots, they recommend docking on day 4, so that is my decision time.

My yorkie Toby has his tail intact and I love to see him wagging his tail in response to something I've said. He wags his tail in his sleep if someone whispers(I got into the habit of whispering to my daughter that we should walk him after tea, etc, and now if anyone whispers on tv or anything his little tail wags like mad).
