| Playpens for puppies I have been wondering about getting a playpen the next time I breed one of my girls. Have any of you done that? Lady only had one this time and so I see no need to get a playpen yet. I was thinking is it worth it to buy a brand new one? It would have no smells, stains and, hopefully, no holes in it. With only one pup if I was planning on selling her a playpen wouldn't be a good investment even if it was used. Autumn should be heat again in time to have pups for Christmas(not ready to leave). If she should have 5, then I think a playpen would be a good investment, especially timewise. Because Lacijo should come in heat a second time shortly after that. (Not sure because she hasn't come in heat the first time yet.) I would get one of those play yards for the puppies but I don't have the space inside for one of them. For those of you who do have a playpen, how do you prepare the inside of the playpen for your babies? I have read that someone keeps a bed at one end and newspaper at the other. Thanks Sylvia. |

| Just my opinion, but I don't think you want to use a regular baby play pen. They have mesh sides and I would think the pups would chew and make holes. Also, they can climb up the side and probably get out or fall and get hurt. I've been looking also and think the doggie play yard type that have 8 panels that you can configure would be the best solution. You don't have to use all the panels. If you don't have a lot of room, just make a small square. JMO I've been finding them (metal type) at all the pet stores.

| pens Human baby pens do not work for me. They have mesh sides and pups get their nails caught, I have awaken to screaming pups hanging on the side a number of times, so I threw them out...some can climb out also..they are not sanitary...the flooring and mesh get very dirty..and I had the chewers who escaped. I find the best investment is a canine pen for pups...a 3x3 or 4x4 metal puppy play pen from Cental Metal Products. They have grid floors, but when pups are tiny I put down newspapers or a piece of cheap vinyl. You can buy the grid flooring for tiny breeds..safe for feet...or you can use a piece of vinyl..I do that also...everything can be washed and cleaned. Good luck Last edited by YorkieRose; 05-22-2005 at 04:03 AM. |

| I have a baby play pen (2 of them) from Walmart. It does have mesh sides but Bella never tried to climb it or chew it. We use one for her sleeping at night and one in our family room when we need her to be out of the way like vacuuming etc. I have her bedding and stuffed animals on one side and a wee wee pad on the other. She used to use the wee wee pad in the middle of the night when she first came home, now she holds it. I do still keep it in there just in case. Bella is 16 weeks now and still sleeping in here, it has worked for us.

| pens They can be okay for a single pup to grow up in...but I was relaying my experinces with a litter..they make a bigger mess, no place to hang water and food cups..so those get turned over...nothing quite as messy as a litter of 4 or 5 playful pups in a playpen..LOL LOL |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | hhhmmm, I am currently using a play pen. So far, it's worked for me...but then again they are only 3 weeks old. I've read everyone's replies and am now rethinking keeping them there. Thanks, guys! |

| I used play-pens but each puppy had their own. I didn't have any problems. ...(thank-goodness) I went to garage sales and bought them up pretty inexpensively. I did throw something over the top...so they couldn't climb out. I bought one of those plastic play-yards for kids and pets at toys-r-us. Mine climbed right out...didn't work out very good. |

| I use a metal-type pen (no floor) for my Rowdy. We have a huge den with stained concrete floor and so I set up the "pen" and put papers on the floor (he really doesn't need them anymore becasue he doesn't "go" in the pen). I keep a bed and lots of toys in there. It is about 3 feet tall and is in attached sections so that you can make it any size or shape you want it. We traveled to relatives last week and I took it with us, set it up in their den (vinyl floor) so that I could put him in it when lots of people were in the house to keep him from getting stepped on. He knows it is his "home", he will go in there to take a nap, even though there is a bed for him and our other dog out in the main part of our den. We will be taking the pen with us this summer as we go to the mountains in our travel trailer. We'll use it outdoors to keep him contained when we can't watch him constantly (we camp right beside a river). |
