| Please Help! Chloe is having problems My 5 month baby Chloe keeps crying and scratching at her right ear. Its hard to see whats going on in there but it looks like she might have actually made it bleed a little bit. She just started scratching at it today. Could she have ear mites? I am supposed to go out of town tommorrow, but it looks like I will definetly have to take her to the vet because she is just miserable. It takes her awhile to settle down once the itching flares up. Anybody have a clue whats going on with her? Is this real severe? Is there any ear drops that I can get to help relieve her pain?

| Bless her heart! I'm sure its so hard to see her suffer like that. It may be ear mites or it could even be an ear infection. Some dogs are succeptible to them. I can't think of anything you can do to get her through till you are able to see the vet, maybe someone else has ideas?? In either case you'll need some medication from the vet. I wouldn't try to treat it yourself. I hope she's able to rest tonight. Bo sends puppy kisses!

| I imagine it is mites. Do you notice her shaking her head at all? You can use some cotton balls and clean it the best you can till a vet sees her. You will probably notice it smells, in that case, it most likely ear mites. It isn't serious, just nerve racking for Chloe. Hope she gets some relief soon.

| Her head does have a weird bad cheesy smell all of a sudden. And she does shake it. I gave her a bath today(partly because of that funky smell) and I am afraid I may have upset the problem. She really needed one though. So does this pretty much confirm ear mites? How does a dog get them? Can my other dogs get it from Chloe?

| I don't think they are highly contagious. Generally long ear breeds have problems with this, not our babies. Mites like warm and moist. If you can get some cotton or kleenex in her ear to clean the brown/black junk out. Also, getting any water out will help tons. They love the wet stuff. I wouldn't worry about this being an on going problem though.

| She could possibly have an ear infection. I know my boyfriends dog did this when he had an ear infection. |

| I hope Chloe feels better quick! It is possible that it's an infection rather than mites...or maybe you got some water in her ear when she had her bath. Maddie's ears used to have a smell to them and she scratched them a lot, and I asked the vet about it and they were clear of mites or infection. He said to take a cotton ball with some rubbing alcohol on it and clean the ear every now and then. It seemed to be more of a problem when she was young...lately I haven't noticed anything. Anyway, I hope little Chloe turns out okay and the vet visit will help her! |

| I dont think it could can be water in her ear. She was scratching and crying at that ear before the bath. She just stopped for a while, and then stupid me gave her the bath and this started the scratching and whining again. She just settled down and is sleeping now, thank goodness. I feel really bad. Something always happens to my dogs after vet hours. And I am usually too cautious and end up taking them to the emergency after hours animal hospitals and end up throwing away hundreds of dollars on something that ends up not being a big deal. ( last time I did this it cost me $700, and all they really did was give her glucose!- I later found out I could have given her karo syrup and she would have been just fine!)

| She's not in any danger if it is an infection or mites. The biggest problem is she is uncomfortable and may cry and scratch and keep you awake. She'll be fine, don't worry!!

| Sniff her ears and see if they smell. Also, check for a black substance in there that sort of looks like coffee grounds. Leila got them once as a puppy, and I've had cats that had them when I got them, so I don't really think short eared dogs are immune to them. |

| If she is still really scratching the ear try to get her into the vet as soon as you can because whether it is infection or ear mites her scratching it will only make it worse. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | We have a cocker and they are NOTORIOUS for ear problems - it this is an infection you can treat it very easily - and then regularly clean the ears to prevent more infections - I know yorkies aren't prone to this but do get them...they hurt but once you put in the medicine and CLEAN out the goo - you should have no more problems - Ear Mites are treatable - Chanel came to us with them as a baby - they look like coffee grounds inside the ear (yuk) ....Good luck - poor baby - it's got to be awful for her.... |

| Ear mites, (Otodectes cynotis) usually lives in the ears and on the head of affected cats or dogs but it can sometimes live on the body too. In order to eliminate ear mites it is important to treat your cat's or dog's ears, the haircoat and the pet's environment for the mites as they are extremely contagious. There are a number of approved medications for ear mites. Flea control products that kill adult fleas will kill mites. These can be used to treat the coat and the house, according to the product directions. |

| Our yorkie has never had an ear infection, but our miniature poodle had them non stop for 3 years. Always scratching his ear and it stunk. Our vet kept giving us antibiotic ear drops. The last one was so bad he developed a huge cyst under his ear. I did some internet research and found a product called Zymox. I asked the vet if they sold it and they no, but they could order it. They also said don't waste our money, it won't work. Well, I ordered it and Toby has been totally infection free for about three months now. We put it in his ear once a day for 10 days, then once a week since. It is wonderful stuff. |
