| Best ways to train dogs to site..etc I have tried the treat thing, but he just focuses on the treat. How can i teach him simple commands, like sit, paw, roll over. my older dog just learned it...but the 6 month old can only focus on the treat....he jumps up and down like a freak. thanks.

| yeah, i really dont use treats at all. some people do, but i dont. i personally just dont want my dogs to do things in anticipation for a treat, but rather to please me. Maggie has done wonderful without treats. you just have to be persistent and make a total fool of yourself praising them. when they do what you ask, play with them, love on them, just go completely nuts with the love it is actually pretty fun. dogs have a natural desire to please their master. they live for that...they want to see you happy. they want to know they have made you happy. they want nothing more than to please you and to receive your love in return. just put the treats away and save them for a random time that you feel like spoiling the baby. persistence is key. it is so much easier to just give in and give them a treat. but it is not the long term solution. what will you do when you dont have a treat but you want your dog to listen? it makes it a little more difficult. i have tested this theory..my hubby's dog is praised with treats. he is completely dependent on them. demands them. and will not do anything unless he is bribed. he is 10 years old. my 2 dogs do not get treats. they are the complete opposite. I am not saying that giving treats is bad or makes you a bad dog owner, i just think it could effectively be done without the treats. give it a shot and let me know

| I think its my fault too...i try to be persistent, but then feel bad that i am bothering him or putting too much pressure on him. lol yes i know i am the owner...hee he, but i think owned is more the term. I will try w/o the treats, seems like a good idea. my oldest learned without treats,,,,,but exactly like you said, he loves praise. He goes nuts when i start saying you are a good boy, who is my good boy...he loves it. My youngest doesnt seem to care lol.

| one other thing....like i am trying it with him now. He thinks it is play time & is biting my hands, now he normally doesnt bite....how can i reprimand him for biting...but stay postitve to reinforce the sitting behavior.

you could always send him to me and let me train him i love training. it is just so fun. i'm no expert but i do have a passion for animals and love to watch them learn. so therefore, i get real satisfaction out of training this way..it is more rewarding than giving treats, IMO. giving them love and affection as a reward, they usually give it back and you both get something out of it.

on a cute note tho...when i was trying to teach mickey to sit, the older one johnny came over and he would sit...i praised him...and mickey would try to sit. (out of jealously im sure) so after i started to praise mickey, johnny came over to him and started licking his face..as if he was saying good boy. lol kinda cute. I will have to be patient....he is a stubborn one.

| Teach him that when he pays attention to you and not the treat, he gets the treat! Hold a treat out in your hand away from your body. He'll probably start out by staring at the treat in your hand... Let him stare. Eventually he should glance over at your face (which could take a while, be patient!) the second he does, click (or do whatever you're doing to mark the behavior) and give him the treat.... Repeat. He should figure out that he gets the treat when he looks at YOU. Slowly increase the amount of time he has to look at you... from a brief glance increase it to a second or two, then 5 seconds, then 10.. Eventually he'll just sit and stare you in the face, paying attention to what you're doing instead of where the treat is. My boy would sit there and stare and whine at my hand or a toy or whatever.. After working with him a few times like this, he now looks me right in the eyes when he wants something. He knows that I'm the one that's going to get it for him, so he pays attention to ME. Here's a good article that gives more details on attention: http://www.clickersolutions.com/arti.../attention.htm |

| "sit" was the first thing lilo learned at age of 10 weeks. Treats worked for us good , but it does take a lot of patience. Here is video of Lilos first "sits" And second one is Lilo at age 3 mo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oS_kLuvVGCk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvgcEX74wgk
