Newbie: Baby Luna Hello everyone! I'm Melissa from Miami, FL. I've decided to introduce myself since we have finally decided to bring home a teacup Yorkie. Although, we had also been looking into the Cairn Terrier and the Westie, our heart kept calling for Yorkie. I am so very glad that I have found this forum (linked to me at the Cairn forum) and I look forward to exchanging experiences with you all. Well, here's our baby Luna! She is almost 9 weeks old (born on 8/22) and will be home with us on Sunday, till then here are photos from yesterday when we went to pick her out. http://www.hometown.aol.com/ma0984/images/luna01.gif http://www.hometown.aol.com/ma0984/images/luna02.gif By the way, I would love to know what to expect or what I should do on the first day of the puppy's arrival. This is the first time we own a dog and I would hate to do something wrong on the FIRST day, hehe. Thanks everyone! Last edited by FunkyMunkie; 10-23-2004 at 10:11 AM.

Oh Melissa, she is such a little darling! She looks sooooo feminine and cute! We LOVE new babies around here! Welcome to YorkieTalk! I know you will find lots of help and advice here. Lots of smiles and giggles, too. Today, before she comes home, you may want to pick up an exercise pen and a crate for your baby, especially if you work and have to leave her alone during the day. Put a nice soft old shirt of yours in it with a nice soft baby blanket. Also, you'll need some pee pads for her to go on inside, since housetraining takes quite a long time, and pee pads make it easier to train. I would ask the breeder what Luna is eating now and get in at least a small supply for her. You may or may not want to change the brand of food, but right at the beginning, when it is traumatic for them to be taken away from mama, it's good to keep them on the same food they were weaned to. At this age they need to be offered a tablespoon for food 4 - 6 times a day. And always have fresh water available. And of course she'll need a few toys.....about 35 toys ought to do it! Just kidding, but that's what Higgins has now......The more little toys they have, the less stuff of YOURS they chew up. When you have her in your arms.....you won't be able to put her down.

Aww, thank you so much Higgin's Mom for your warm comments and most of all your help! I am so happy to say that I have all the supplies you mentioned. Although, I don't think I'll have the crate until Monday (ordered it online)... I do have an old carry cage from my cat that we don't use anymore for Luna. Another thing that I absolutely find wonderful is this bed/puppy warmer that my breeder sold to us. I'm not sure if any of you have heard of it, but what it is, is a dog shaped pillow that has like a pocket where the puppy can lay in and the best part of all it warms the puppy and has a heart beat, as if they were sleeping with their mother. The breeder says that it should eliminate most of the crying during the night and most importantly the puppy will feel safe. We are going to setup the laundry room for the puppy as soon as we can. It is a decent size room, not huge but not tiny either. We plan to leave that area absolutely for Luna, thus we won't need a play pen. I have already bought her a handful of toys, food, bowls, mini harness/leash, wee wee pads, nultri-cal (recommended by the breeder), a brush, etc. Oh, I can't get over how thrilled I am to have found this forum!! Thank you all! Last edited by FunkyMunkie; 10-23-2004 at 08:52 AM.

Sounds like you are getting Luna from a good breeder with excellent advice! That is sometimes hard to come by lately....too many people in it just for the money and lots of sickly pups from puppy mills. I LOVE the idea of the puppy pillow! That should really help Luna adjust. We got Higgins when we were spending the winter in Florida in a tiny 17' travel trailer. So he owned the whole thing and WE were his pillows! He did really well going on his pee pee pad, too. Then we came home to Maine and a whole HOUSE and Higgins was just AWED by all those rooms! It really was so funny. Now he pees and poops where he wants and we are still his pillows......sigh........Maybe I'm not such a good one to give advice.......

Wish I could see her but I can't - probably my over zealous computer security!! As regards you worrying in case you do something wrong - you can't as long as you love Luna which I know you do already!! Luna is Spanish for moon - would be interested to know why you picked the name? How small do you think she'll be when grown? I was going to say how "big" until I noticed you said teacup. I'm sure you will never be sorry you chose a yorkie, ask anyone here!! I have two - 15 month old Gypsy Rose and 14 week old Gizzie Chavi! We live in Wales. WELCOME!!!

Sorry you can't see the pictures, I will probably be posting more later tomorrow upon Luna's arrival. Yes, Luna means moon in spanish. We are hispanic and naming our puppy something spanish eliminates the mispronouncing of the pup's name (on behalf of my father and grandparents). We had gone through at least 100 names, back and forth, and we just thought Luna was a cute name, both pronounced in english and spanish. I already call her Lulu, or Nana... and she isn't even here. And yes our breeder is EXCELLENT! She even offered to take care of Luna if we ever go on vacation! She doesn't trust any puppy kennel because once they stole some of her customer's dogs there and even closed down the business while her customer was on vacation, so when she returned the puppies were no where to be found! She is also willing to answer any questions and is giving us Luna with her first bath, food, and such... she is a sweet heart. Oh, and she's been breeding for about 20 years now, which is very comforting to hear! Here are the links to the pictures for anyone who is having trouble seeing them: Luna 01 Luna 02 or if the above links don't work: Luna 01 Luna 02 Last edited by FunkyMunkie; 10-23-2004 at 12:33 PM.

Oh, I was SURPRISED today!! Luna is finally HOME! She is so happy, not one bit nervous. She's only been here an hour and she's already eating. Here she is(again): Luna 03 Pardon the abundance of photographs but I have fallen in love with my new baby, and I just have to share the cuteness! P.S. I would appreciate it if someone could show me how to make thumbnails, they are much better! Thanks!

I'm thrilled for you!! I also had our baby Gizzie (14 weeks now) a day early!! Glad you don't have to go through that extra night lol! So Luna will grow up understanding Spanish too then? I've been learning for 5 years now (we have a small property over in Spain) - I speak it occasionally to Gypsy Rose and Gizzie Chavi!! Let us know how Luna's first night goes!!

Congrats FunkyMunkie! And welcome home little Luna! She's adorable! Don't worry, just don't give her any human food until she's a lot bigger (if ever). And no chocolates, that can be lethal to them. Don't worry, you'll be a great Mom and all of YorkieTalk will be of help when you need it. Here's another good read: http://www.yorkietalk.com/index.php?...ie_accessories

Thank you everyone!! She is so HAPPY!! She's been sleeping, eating and playing all day. That makes us feel really good!! She's been crying a bit when we put her back down for her nap, but the puppy pillow with the heart beat has worked WONDERS!! Thank God! We've already had 4 accidents in the house, but I am assuming this is how it'll be till she gets the hang of things. Last edited by FunkyMunkie; 10-23-2004 at 03:11 PM.

Be sure to put her on the pee pad the minute she wakes up and about 5 minutes after she eats and lots in between times. They really don't get the hang of it for several months. YOU are the one who will be "trained" for awhile. I'll be anxious to see if she sleeps through the night without too much fuss. That pillow sounds like a Godsend!
