Peeka Boo I See You! Donating Member | Help So Angry!! Daisy is now 14 weeks and she has already had 4 sets of shots the breeder i got her from was excellent with getting them done she also had 2 bordatella's when i got her with 3 sets of shots. I just got her fourth done yesterday well my question is this.. my vet says she needs shots every 3 weeks untill 16 weeks well i am so peeved at him right now i could scream!! My mom had to take Daisy in for me to get the shots because of my ankle and they gave her a third bordatella I was so pi$$ed because to me thats over vaccinating well when she told me i got on the phone to the vet i said i am very upset that you gave her another dose just a few weeks after she just had it he said he was sorry they must have done it while he was talking to my mom and he would refund my acct for the vac. Well i was steaming and he says she will need another set of shots well with her being only a week and a half from 16 weeks i don't think she needs another set what do you guys think? I am in the process of finding a new vet i do like that he is knowledgeable but he is very money hungry it cost us almost $200.00 for shots and a fecal sample. I just don't know what to do here? Also one thing i hate most is they always have to take my dogs in the back where i can't see them this urks me like no other because they only take them back there so they can play with them last time i wouldn't let them take Daisy in the back i made the asst do everything in front of me well she must have told the vet i wouldnt let her go and all the staff was gaga over her so he came in and made some lame excuse about wanting to check her eyes to take her back there well the second the door closed all i heard was oh she's so cute aww,aww i just rolled my eyes. But this really bugs me the first time i took Peeka there he was in the back for a 1/2 hour i had to ask them to bring him back to me Sorry for the long post i'm just frustrated and i don't want to get her more shots if she doesn't need them. Thanks guys!

| my boys had to go for 3 rounds in the first 3 months of their life, then not again until they were a year for one round and now they are set for 3 years. My vet did not give them bortadella(SP?) bc they are not at risk of that and she did not give them lyme bc again they are not at risk for that, being indoor dogs for the majority of the time! it does seem a bit strange that he said every 3 weeks for 4 months, thats an awful lot of shots! I dunno though, my dogs did not get some of the typical vacs. |

| Mine only got the bordatello shot once at 3 months old. They got the parvo/distemper combo shot 4 times 3 weeks apart

| Hey Amber. I didn't quite understand the shots thing either because I thought Hoku would only need one more but she needs 2. The vet says it all depends on when your breeder started the shots as to how many they will need to be fully protected. Apparently some breeders give them too early Hmm . . .

| Some vets also wont count breeder shots and make you repeat the shots the breeder has given

| Central Valley Veterinary Hospital 55 E Miller Avenue (near 3300 S) SLC, UT Their number is 487-1321. I like it cause it's also open 24/7 for emergencies and I LOVE my vet - Susan McDonald.

| I think the reason for the multiple vaccinations is that because up until 4 months of age they retain some immunities from the mother's milk/colostrum. If they have natural immunity from that, the vaccination will not fully take. All of the vets I know require their last shots to be after 4 months of age. Also it is my understanding that the bordatello shots actually only last 6 months. At least that is what I was told when they revaccinated mine prior to her spaying. I would not be offended that they wanted to play with my dog. However, having said that, I did change vets when they would take mine to the back for shots and I could not see what they were doing. I was very cautious about just getting one shot at a time and waiting a couple of weeks between them. They did not seem to appreciate my caution. |

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | I think: dogs are over vaccinated - period. And, anytime a dr or vet won't let a parent or owner observe/be present during routine exams or work - time to look for another dr or vet.

Peeka Boo I See You! Donating Member | That's how i feel to why won't they give the shots right there in the room with me? it really makes me wonder what goes on back there. i really don't mind if they want to see them and play with them i would love to have everyone come in the room and do so but why do they have to make excusses to take them in the back. you all make very good points and i am more confused than ever lol. I feel she is close enough to 16 weeks not to need another set but what if i'm wrong and she doesn't get fully vacs because i didn't trust them? The bordatella was way to much yes i agree mabey every six months but she just had one last month for a total of 3 in 14 weeks way to much IMO. He told me my results if the poop sample would be in first thing this morning well i called at 8:30 no results they said they should be getting them anytime now so i called back at 11:30 well the vet isn't in yet you have to wait for him is what they told me and he would be in at 12:30 so i called at 1:30 still no news it's getting old

| I think it is too many shots as well, and the cost is crazy! We paid around $26 Can for each set of shots our dogs received. Hundreds of dollars each time is way too much. |

| I don't know about the shot thing, but I am amazed they take your baby back and you don't get to go, WOW!! I think my vet is expensive, but I also love them there, they take their time and answer all my questions and they always remember by dogs too. I went in one time just to get something, (no appointment) and she saw us and came right out and called Cooper by name and remembered he had gone on a trip, so I know she hadn't just read his name off his chart. She also suggested we never give more than one shot and they always call to check his reactions to his shots..I love them. I think you should be very comfortable with your vet, just like your children's Pediatrician and your own doctor.

| Dr. McDonald seems quite knowledgeable about Yorkies and other small breeds. I know for a fact that if she does not know something that she will take the time to research it and/or speak to a specialist. I wouldn't say their charges are 'cheap' but I think they're probably the average for vets here in Utah. Shoot Amber, I had a referral card from them the other week and I thought about you but just tossed it the other day. Anyhow, if you do try them, let them know I referred ya
