| Weird funny smell I haven't posted in a while, and was a little hesitant to post this question as my girl Rylie may get upset as it is a bit embarrasing for her. Well here goes. Every once in a while, my girl Rylie (she is almost 13 months and spayed) get's this funny not pleasant smell comming from her bum. It smells really bad almost fishy. I have absolulty no idea what this smell is or why she is getting it. If anyone has any idea what is might be or why she is getting this please please please let me know.

| It could be her anal glands. They may need to be expressed and your vet can do that for you. Mine have theirs done with grooming. And tell her it's ok don't be embarrassed |

| What exactly does that mean "expressed" and what is the cause of this? Is it an expensive thing? And do all groomers do it? Is it best to go to the vet? And does this "expressing" need to be done often?

| oh we know all about anal glands every day when they poop... the glands should empty themselves... but if one day they dont' empty.. they fill up and the liquid in them becomes thicker each day, until it can't come out even with a good poop... your dog will usually scoot which is a good indication that their glands are bothering her.... is her poop solid??? also... now that i know all about the.. i can feel around layla's bum and i can tell when they are full... it feels almost swollen around her bum. the vet can express them... usually painless... can be very smelly... if it is a constant problem (like ours) try giving her food with more fibre to make her poops harder.. could it just be plain old gas??? |

Rylie's poop is always solid, hardly ever has runny poop. She also never scoots. I'm not sure what the smell is. I thought about the gas, but it just doesn't smell like a plain old fart (sorry) It has more of a fish smell and is quiet stong smelling. The smell will come for only a few hours or a day then it goes away naturally. Before it would only happen maybe once a month, now it seems like it may be happening more ofter but again, will only last for the day. i am not sure what this smell is and it defently doesn't smell like a normal fart. Do you think it is the anal glands? How do i know if her anal glands are full?

| hello torontonian!!! well... sorry for how graphic this will be... feel around her bum... with layla.. if her glands are ok.. i can feel the muscle around where the poop would come out... if they are full.. it feels swollen around there.. and you cant feel those muscles anymore... when i bring layla to the groomer to get them emptied.. it only costs 12 bucks... so if you can.. bring her in and see what he says... however... does the smell come AFTER she has pooped?? because if it does... this could just be a bit left over after they have emptied... like i said.. when she poops they should empty... in the morning if layla hasn't had a poop.. she scoots because they bother her... then when she goes.. there is a smell ... so perhaps you can wipe her bottom (if in fact the smell is after a poop) let me know what you think |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | When my pom gets overexcited she emits the smell you are describing. And it is really strong. It's a cross between fish and urine. I don;t know what causes it.

| So confused. Quote:
I am so confused I have no clue what it is, or why it happens. She doesn't scoot, or anything. I tried to feel around last night to see if it was her glands but i didn't know what i was looking for and didn't feel anything swollen. COnfused!!

| Sounds like it may be some type of vaginal discharge. I have noticed this with my female when she gets to the end of her heat cycle. Is she cleaning her self more than usual? This could be a good indication. Good luck.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | I'm pretty sure your smelling anal gland discharge. if the glads are full they can leak at any point during the day. take her to the vet or groomers to have then expressed. Since its a first time appt at the vet for this problem they will probably make you see the vet and charge an office visit plus the expression charge. after that what happens is that usually the tech's will do it without an appt and only charge the expression fee. OR you can go to the groomer and it will probably be cheaper but if its something other the anal glands the groomer won't know.
