What is the story on the Biewer Yorkie? Part Maltese? Are these Biewer Yorkies part Maltese? Where would the white hair have come from? They can't be pure breed Yorkies, can they?

| No. It is genetic. But they are still purebreds...in a way.

Yorkies were developed from breeding several different kinds of terriers together and some belive they were bred with the maltese to get the small size. There is some controversy on this subject and if you do a "search" of this forum using the word Biewer you can find the threads where it is discussed. The short answer is yes, Biewers were derived from purebred yorkies. They carry the recessive genes for the parti-colors. You can also go to almost any Biewer breeders website and find the history of the Biewer and you can google the history of the yorkie to find the generally accepted understanding of how the breed came to be.

From:http://eastlandkennels.com/history_o...wer_yorkie.htm The Biewer Yorkie was originally a piebald genetic recessive gene occurrence from 2 Yorkshire Terriers but unscrupulous breeders have tried to match the look of the Biewer Yorkshire by crossing the Yorkshire Terrier and the Shih-Tzu. The crossing will produce the parti/piebald/white markings from the Shih-Tzu influence after the second generation but these crossbred dogs would take generations before they would produce the hair coat and the facial features seen in the Biewer Yorkshire. If the dog being presented to you as a Biewer Yorkshire has very wavy and/or course hair, or the facial features or body style of the Shih-Tzu then it's highly unlikely that it is a true purebred Biewer Yorkie.

AKC Registered Tri Color Yorkies.. To answer your question, if a Tri Color puppy is born from 2 blue and gold AKC registered parents you CAN register the puppy as a Tri-Color Yorkie. You have to call AKC for the special color code. I believe they also require photos as well. I've done some extensive research about Biewers and Tri Color Yorkies. Believe it or not there is a difference. Tri Yorkies are just that, 3 colored Yorkie white blue and gold the coloring can be in any pattern. The Biewer is also a Tri-Colored however, the Biewer has a standard they must be specifically marked and when you breed 2 Biewers you will get the same specified markings...you can read the the Biewer Standard on my website in the 'Biewer Gals' page. There is still much controversy about the breed but that's with any new breed. I support them 100%, I do not believe in breeding them to blue/gold Yorkies or Tri Colored Yorkies..but that's just my opinion. I am trying to keep them as true as possible going as far to register litters with the same German Registration the parents are registered with. I am not saying the only way I do it is right. But that's the way that makes the most sense to me. I don't know if the AKC will ever recognize them. I can only hope. I feel it is important for those of us that want to bring this beautiful breed to make others aware of Biewers as a separate breed. I am doing my small part by training them for Agility and then competing in Agility Trials. Although they won't win titles through AKC trials, they have many other Trials we can compete in! Sorry to ramble, but this is my opinion on Biewers. Hugs, Irene

thanks! Irene, Thanks so much for the information! It is so interesting. So the first Biewers came from regular Yorkies? If two regular yorkies had the tri colored pups, then to keep them going they would have had to inbreed them, right? Or am I wrong on that? So every Biewer alive came from the same two parents? Sorry, but this is sooo interesting to me. History was never my favorite subject except for Yorkie history I guess. lol

You are correct. They did carefully inbreed, then line breed to get to this point. The original parents were registered with the VDH which is Germany's equivelent to our AKC. The VDH is very strick, they will not register a black and gold Yorkir OR a Tri Color. That is why the original breeders Mr and Mrs Biewer went a step further to develop a standard for this new breed. Although it's been 21 yrs we must be very careful and examine pedigrees when breeding. I am still in the learning process but all the knowlege I have about Biewers is directly from a dear friend of mine in Germany who is also a breeder. I can't take the credit!! I am just sharing with you what she has taught me thus far. Hugs, Irene
