| Play pen? Hi. We are getting ready to adopt our first Yorkie pup. He's 8 weeks and 4 lbs. I know about crates and gates but I've also heard some about using a babyplaypen to keep the pups out of trouble when you aren't home. Do they know scratch or bite through the mesh of those? We haven't purchased anything yet and are wanting to weigh all the options to decide what will be best. Thank you for your advice! |

| I've never used one for yorkies, but i used them for Cairn Terrier puppies & found them quite practical. They had much more room than in most crates so I could put a biggish bed at one end & food & water at the other. I stood them on a hard surface, not carpet, & lined the floor with thjick newspaper to catch any puddles, but I'm talking about litters of young puppies before they left for their new homes. The ones I used were made of very stiff steel grid wire, similar to the strong metal crates, too thick even for wire cutters, so there was no possibility of them biting through. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I used one for Cali when I got her at 9 weeks. I got the one for dogs and have been extremely happy with it. It kept her safe when I needed to be gone and she potty trained extremely fast. I put her bedding at one end and her wee wee pad at the other. I still have the pen up for her to use the pad in and if I have workmen over or need her safely away I put her in thier. I got the Dog N go one I think that's what it's called.

| Wow 4# at 8 wks he's going to be a big boy... He will probably outgrow a playpen before too long. I bought an xpen. I love it. I bought the 24in high one and it came with a bag for transportation. It's great for travel, in a yard w/o fence. We have a houseboat and go out on sandbars for day and overnight trips. I like to put them in the pen, then I don't have to worry about other dogs or them wandering off. It's good size but you can actually make it any size or shape you want. |

| I totally agree with Butterfly............that is a VERY big puppy and will end up weighing at least 20 pounds, so a play pen isn't a practical investment unless it's very cheap at a garage sale. I would invest in the doggie fencing. This way you can hook it to each side of the wire crate, (crate on the outside of the fenced area) attach a water bottle to the side, lay wee-wee pad at the opposite end of the bed, cover the crate with a blanket to make it feel more like a safe little cave, and add some toys and chews. This is how I did both Zada and Azrael and it was wonderful. It's also where Zada recouped from knee surgery. The fence is wonderful. You can take anywhere and set it up like a play area. Great investment! |

| I agree with the Ex-Pen!!! I wish I had purchased an ex-pen. I have a different type of indoor/out pen I purchased at Amazon. It is rather nice, with removable velcro-type side panels for laundering, but it is gapped around the bottom leaving room for my litter to get out. This will be great for my adults (it folds down stacking about 4 inches high and good for visits on the farm, camping, picnics...) but not good for my litter. The ex-pen would provide better service for a pup, I would think. I have used playpens in the past, but what a pain I found it to be! Cleaning was (to me) a back-breaking chore and the pad that is in the bottom became a chew toy and a urine sponge. I need to purchase one of those 'puppy pad holder trays' which might help in that department. Also, as a little hint, I am utilizing the disposable vinyl table clothes as floor portection in my pen and wanted to pass this on as a great hint for clean-up! Go with the ex-pen! Hope this helps. |

Peeka Boo I See You! Donating Member | I used a baby play pen for Peeka and i'm using the same one for Daisy it is wonderful it's cozy and has lots of room for a bed and toys it also keeps them out of trouble and from peeing when i can't watch her every second i say get one. even though your puppy is big you ban still use it through thew toughest time the potty trining he may out grow it but Peeka is 4 lbs and i still put him in it and he fits fine. you have to remember they make them for toddler babies and they get way bigger than any yorkie does so i say YES!! BTW mine has mesh on the sides and i haven't had a problem with scatching or bite through

QUOTE] Sorry, but I must disagree. My logan was 4lbs @ 8 weeks & he is 12.5 full grown. Logan spends during the day while we are gone & at night in a regular childs pack-n-play from target. He has plenty of room. The only problem we had was he learned he could jump out at 13 weeks, so we just put a fitted crib sheet over the top & he hasn't tried since (stay with them the first time to make sure they aren't going to still try & get out). Logan did chew out of his playpen once, but it was an emergency (he had diarrhea & didn't wanna go in his pen), but we just patched the hole with duct tape & it's been fine since.

| Hint for clean-up: Buy an absobant crib sheet & pack-n-play fitted sheet. put absorbant sheet down first then fitted sheet to hold in place. Remove & wash sheets every week. Getting pee smell out of the bottom part is harder than all get out.

| i use a baby playpen with Ajah we got from a friend who no longer needed it. 1st let me say yorkie's are escape artist so be prepared when your baby gets older to find them outside the pen. With some technique's that we learned from watching the Dog Whisperer we actually got her trained to stay in the play pen. I love it for when we're gone, have company, or need to clean up without them in the way. |

| I have an Xpen and I love it. It's so functional and BIG. I love that it can be taken outside, spread open like a gate, attached to a crate for extra runing room, or added on w/more xpens to have a huge area. It was like 60 for mine and the BEST investment. I never crate anymore.. and my 3 small pups love it. |

| I use playpens all of the time.. A tip for hte pad, I whip out my sewing machine and make a reversible cover for mine, Kind of like a pillowcase. You can put snaps or velcro on the open end or jsut fold it over. I make 3-4 at a time and washe them. I usually make one side a plush fuzzy pile for gripping with a new puppy litter and the other side just a plain print/ A hint for the pad,, I buy the BIG garbage bags and slip them over the pad before I put the slipcover on. I buy the playpens whenever htey are cheap at a thrift stor or garage sale. Usullay paying less than 10.00 each. That way if they get ruined you can toss them . I have even taken mine out on the patio in the summer time and le them get some air. Nevr had a problem with puppies chewing through. I did have a momma do that jumped out one evening and then could not get back in so she chewed a hole in one in. It was very small when lookig at it but it eneded up being her little doggie door LOL. It stretched tot he size of her body. That was the only time I had a problem. Pups didnt pay any attention . Bonnie |
