| Neutering Tomorrow.. (Ater Procedure Care?) My baby is finally being neutered tomorrow morning and i am afraid for him. Went to the clinic this weekend for pre-bloodwork. Doctor mention previously that one of his testicle still has not drop yet and is afraid for future cancer so it has to be removed. In addition to 2 baby teeth extraction. Poor boy is going to be in pain after the surgery. I can pick him up after the surgery. My concern is how do you care for a dog after a surgery. I don't how he will feel. How would they feel comfortable with a cone in his head? How do they sleep and eat with it. Any opinion and expertise will be very helpful to me.

| im not an expert, but my chuhuaha and yorkie were both spayed. but they are girls. anyway, after my chuhuahas surgery she was very weak and tired int he car and then i put her in her bed, but she refused. the vet said that she shouldnt jump alot because of the stitches. everything went fine. for my yorkie she was weak at first and I put her with her blanket on the floor with a heater and water next to her. for 3-4 hours she mostly slept. hope this helps and let me know how he is doing after the surgery. wish you and him luck! |

| Your baby will be fine. Scruffles was neutered, microchipped and had teeth extracted all in one visit. I dropped him off around 8 a.m. for his appointment and I picked him up that evening. He was groggy, but by the next day he was fine. He did not have a cone and he did not pick at his dissolvable stitches. The stitched area is very small. Just give your baby lots of love and affection and he'll be ok. Don't worry too much and good luck. |

| Oscar was a cryptorchid neuter as well (they found one of his 'boys' under his bladder). It's a slightly more invasive/expensive surgery - but still quite common. Your guy will likely have two incisions rather than just the one as in standard neuters. He will have one down between his legs where his boys are supposed to be, and another one on his abdomen along the side of his penis - both very small incisions. Oscar also had 14 teeth pulled - for him, that was the source of his pain. My vet prescribed pain killers for him and for the first night he definitely needed them. I'm not sure if your vet will prescribe them for your guy for two teeth though and it's not standard (as far as I know) to prescribe them for the neuter. Depends on your vet - either way, they will go over when and how to administer any medication. When you pick him up that night, just be prepared for him to be REALLY tired. Some vets don't allow you to take the dog home the same day as the surgery because they are so lethargic - people think that something is wrong. Let him sleep as much as he wants. He may be drowsy for up to a few days later. Don't let him gorge himself on food or water - but I would recommend he does eat a little something when he gets home that evening. Some vets say no food til the next day - I say give me a break! Oscar and Ruthie were STARVING after their surgeries. Maybe have some soft food on hand - his mouth may be a little tender from the tooth extractions. Definitely restrict his movement as much as you possibly can. No running, no jumping, etc. That includes going up/down stairs. Sometimes it's impossible to keep these guys still, but do the best you can. Definitely watch that he isn't licking at his stitches - licking leads to infection and can quickly lead to pulling stitches out. As far as the cone.. I didn't use the cone on Ruthie or Oscar - my personal preference though. I don't put anything around their little necks. Instead, I made a little diaper by cutting up an old cotton tee and tying it - it worked really well. They didn't bother with it, and I knew they couldn't get at their incision. Some people use a baby onesie too. But, if you're going to cover it, just make sure that there are periods where the incision is not covered and your letting air get to it. I was able to watch my two a lot of the time so I only used the diaper for sleeping at night. If you do decide to use the cone, simply remove it for eating - it shouldn't bother them while sleeping. I think you'll be surprised at how quickly he'll bounce back after the surgery. All dogs are different - Oscar took a few days to get back to himself, Ruthie was up and running like nothing had happened the next morning. If you have concerns following the surgery, call your vet - that's what they're there for. Good luck to your baby! I'm sure he'll be fine!

My vet said that i can take him home the same day. But i work during the day and block off the area so that he is in the kitchen area. Should i let him continue his daily routine when i go to work the next day after his surgery. For example. leave him in the confined kitchen are? Will he bark and bark like he does now after the surgery? Sorry for all the questions. I'm concern parent.

| sine he is going to get two teeth pulled out i think you should feed him soft food for a couple of days after the surgery because his teeth might be still in pain or very sensitive. does he have his own bed...because if your bed is a tall one then he would be jumping off of it (which is not so good for the stitches). if i were you i would just put his bed (if he doesn't have a bed then use a soft blanket or sumthing comfortable) on the floor-that way if he wants to go somewhere he doesnt have to jump off the bed. if you are going to put his bed on the floor then next to it put his water and food bowl. for a couple of days after the surgery i think that you should use potty pads instead of putting him outside. idk, thats just my opinion. after tippy's surgery (she got all her teeth pulled out because she had two rows of teeth and spayed at the same time) it seemed like she didn't want to really be around people because she was so exhausted. all she wanted to do was sleep. so i left her in my bedroom with the light off. after a couple days she was her normal self. hope this answers some of your questions. |

| Update on Sparky Surgery.. poor boy look so exhausted and in pain after the surgery. He barely can put his tush on bed. He slept standing up for some time... I had to lay him down gently. They took two baby tooth out and also did a cryptorchid neutering. They gave him amoxicillian and some pain medication. The cone seem to be too small for him cause he is able to lick his stitches area. I hate the cone thing but i don't know what is a good way to cover the incision area without letting it breathe. Doctor said to not cover the incision cause it wont heal faster. I was going to use the onesis but it does cover the incision. Any suggestion?

Sometimes we have to use our own discretion - and the advice of others. If something the vet suggests is not working, then we have to find alternatives. That's where YT comes in. Do what you think will work. Glad to hear your baby came through ok!

Thanks for the suggestion. As i was looking at his bottom he does have some redness around the stitches, i dunno if it was from the surgery. I am going to the vet to get a bigger cone. This weekend i will go get the onesie for my little one. How do you put it on so that he can't get thru the stitches yet he can pee and poop without using a diaper?
