| Louisville - New Pet Ordinance - Anti-Pet City? Have you all heard about Louisville KY new pet ordinance - signed by their mayor? It effects so many - pet owners! Basically you have to buy a license -for everything concerning pets and limits your rights? Wow! I have heard that many show people are not attending the show coming up there - or are staying in hotels and eating outside of the city. Here is a link I found for information: http://www.louisville-pets.com/ The odinance itself: http://www.louisville-pets.com/CH_91...NAL_SIGNED.pdf What is your make on it and how do you feel about it? I think it seems very complex and involved. Can someone basically tell me what it involves? How do people in Louisville feel about it? I see the mayor is having a public meeting on Tuesday! T. |

| APR had an article on what it would be like in 20 years and Louisville is proving them right. I'm glad I live in the country far away from a big city. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I think this is an excellent law and cannot understand why you aren't for it. It addresses such issues as abandonment, spaying, cruelty, exhibition fighting, and kennel conditions among other things. The only people that wouldn't like this would be puppy mills and people who shouldn't own pets anyways. On page 71, it addresses the issue of pet shops and states that no pet shop shall sale an unfit pet. Buyers can recover cost of purchase and vet costs. If the owner decides to keep the pet they can recover vet care costs. Pet shops and puppy mills will hate this, but I think its great. I think the ANTI-PET comment made is very suspicious and will cause a knee-jerk response in many readers. Don't believe the hype; read the law. Granted, I did not study every page, but everything I did read was excellent. What part of the law didn't you like? "I have heard that many show people are not attending the show coming up there - or are staying in hotels and eating outside of the city." I don't know what part of the law would cause this to happen. Most show people have shot records for their animals. Nancy Last edited by Nancy1999; 01-14-2007 at 12:20 PM. |

I guess what it boils down to - is we as Americans - are we loosing our rights? If if we choose to go beyond what they want - you have to pay. I guess it is all about money. I am all for the rid of puppymills! Believe me! But it seems that no matter what laws the govenment approve - somehow it does also affect the pet owner and the reputable breeder too. So what to do? I am also for spaying and neuter of all pets, but like one YT member mentioned - it is her right. If these towns keep getting away with passing these laws - pretty soon all towns will have this law and then what? No dogs in the year 2020? Hummm! T.

| Most of the ordiance looks great and really does try to protect the animals. Do I have some of this wrong about the number of pets or the selling and advertising - needing a liscense? Or do I have this wrong? Then what exactly is causing others to not like it? Just trying to understand. And yes - most all show people have shots for their dogs. I do! And I even havemy vet give them - just so that I know he has checked out my dogs. T. |

When people use the "big government argument", I always suspect they are trying to throw the subject in a different direction. Do you believe we shouldn't have any laws to protect animals? How about dogfights, is this something you think humans should be allowed to do because some are afraid of big government? Nancy

| I didn't read the article, but it seems to me that if they put all kinds of restrictions and/or fees attached to having multiple dogs and breeding, it's going to make it a LOT less attractive to irresponsible and greedy breeders to try to make a buck off of innocent little lives. How many BYB's do you think would stay in business if they had to provide paperwork on each puppy, and pay fees for each puppy? Just my 2 pennies I'll read the article later, gotta go and cook some dinner now.

| I read through the ordinance and if you are a responsible pet owner you should have no worries. The puppymills, petshops & puppy brokers of course will be upset. This finally holds them responsible for unhealthy, abused or poorly treated dogs & cats. And hits them where it only matters to them-financially. Finally someone of authority is thinking and doing something to positively help animals! I hope other cities are taking notice and will follow suit! I will be following this, to see how it impacts the city and surrounding communities.

| I think that almost everywhere has ordinances or laws like that to some degree... Out where I'm at you have to licence your dogs, and the cost difference between a whole animal and a spayed or neutered animal is a HUGE difference, so much so that most owners will run right out and get theirs fixed! Cause its a licence that needs to be renewed and the fee needs to be paid each time its renewed! And 60 bucks is a heck of alot more than 7 dollars! And you are only allowed to have a certain number of dogs, I think its 3 in some areas and 4 in others. If you have more you must apply for a kennel license and you must ne zoned for it and if you don't live in the correct area or zone you don't have a hope in heck of getting one! And if you violate the number of dogs allowed you may have them ALL taken away from you! A litter of pups does not count unless they are over a certain age ... then they count as Dogs... And if your caught with a dog of age without its Rabies, their is a Serious fine! and a recheck, if your caught again, you may have your dog removed from your home. Animal welfare laws are in place to protect the animals. We have wildlife around our desert and these dogs need the protection! Its up to us to give it to them, and its up to local Government to enforce the local laws put into place to ensure that we are doing our jobs! Because so many of us are NOT! I love the law! Because I don't break it! Its there to protect me and the dogs I love so dearly! Because of the law, I can feel pretty safe knowing that the dogs at the dog park (located right across the street from the police dept) is full of vaccinated licenced dogs! Why??? Because the Animal Control Officer comes in and does random checks! I'm glad they do, cause my licenses are up to date and my vac's are up to date. You have to keep the Vac's on file with the city when you renew the license! I love it!!!! Bring on the laws... As people find more and more ways to "Beat the system" And "scam" us or take advantage of us, innocent animals, children, elders, or anyone else, we will keep making new laws to stop it from happening! K

| I travel to Louisville occasionally and am hoping to attend the show in March. As a whole, I believe that the ordinances that have been put into place are there to protect our pets. There are a few that some breeders will disagree with...... like "tail docking should only be done by a vet".... (I believe that some breeders have experience doing this in a professional manner). Here's an example of my opinion: The SAD thing is there are a bunch of inexperienced idiots out there that will dock tails to save a buck, possibly hurting the little guys AND/OR completely botching it up ... making it too long or short because they are not familiar with the breed... which makes it bad for the professionals who try to keep the breed in "good standard". BUT, I also think that a professional would appreciate the efforts to keep the idiots from doing this crazy stuff and selling poor quality animals that they have no clue about what they are doing and have no business breeding in the first place. This is one example of one of the ordinances that has been put into place. Just an opinion...... but I really think that the new laws were set up with good intentions. Maybe they could have consulted with some of the animal professionals in the area (some of the YTCA board members don't live too far from Louisville).. that may have helped with some of the "on the fence" issues. Enough of my rambling...... don't get too flustered over my post if you disagree..... it is an opinion. I would love to hear what more people think! I could be just hitting the surface and someone could enlighten me on my thinking!

| The only problem I had with it was that your dog had to be revaccinated every time it was boarded. |
