| filing nails ? I am the biggest chicken in the world when it comes to sawyers nails. I am so afraid of hurting him, and I even worry about a groomer or vet hurting him. Does anyone file their baby's nails? I have trimmed them a little , but not very well, and they need it badly. Any suggestions for a coward Mommy?

| not me... i refuse to do it. i let my vet do it that way if they do get hurt, they are at the vet and can be cared for properly.....and my baby doesn't get the feeling that I have hurt her.

| I do ours all the time... If the dog cooperates there's nothing to it. Just don't cut too short and keep styptic powder on hand just in case you accidentally quick 'em. |

| My vet does it for free, so I let my vet do it. She doesn't like it all and starts squirming all over the place.

| I attempted to do it once with Rocky. He started to yelp (I think I got the quick or whatever it's called) so I stopped ASAP. Luckily I didn't cut him, but since then I take him to petsmart, and they do it right infront of me. His regular grooming I do on my own.

| Yes, i filr Sissy's nails. I tried clipping them a few times, but my hubby literally needed to hold her down with all his might and she screamed (yes, screamed) the whole while. It would take 10 minutes to get 2 nails done and then we'd have to stop!! I got a dremel tool that I use and it is much easier. Hubby still needs to hold Sissy, but she doesn't continuously wriggle and she doesn't scream. I can get all the nails done in about 5 minutes. So much easier and you don't need to worry about steptic powder at all!! The only thing you need to watch out for is long foot hair. If you keep their feet trimmed, then no hair can get wrapped around the dremel as its operating.

My furkids Donating Member | I don't like doing the girls nails either...I tried filing and also an electric dremel...the kind they use at the nail salons...they wouldn't even let me near them with it....I do clip them...I put water in the sink when giving them a bath ...just over the feet...I let them soak while I wash and condition them...now they are softer and don't make such a load snap...don't get me wrong...they still don't like it but it's a little easier on them and me! My Mom was telling me the other day (don't know where she read this) that they are coming out with a new type of nail clipper...it lights up to show you where the quick is...I think like red would be the quick, yellow...still a little too close and when it turns green that is where you can cut safely...I will be buying one of these when they come out...I'm sure they will be worth the money as I don't let anyone do any kind of grooming on the girls..I do it all myself.

| I clip & file Tansy's nails, using very smal clippers & a small metal file. Don't know why I bother though really as no sooner are they nice & smooth than she starts to nibble them into sharp little points again |

| There is nothing to it. I cut Coco's nails every couple of weeks. I cut little by little and tons of times I have cut her but it's really no biggie. She spot bleeds for a second then it's over. What I was taught was if you cut little by little you look at the nail itself. There is some white chalky stuff IN the nail. So when you cut the nail you should see circles of white in the nail. The less white chalk you see as you cut, the closer you are getting to the quick. So I usually judge it by that and haven't cut her in a while. I also file them afterwards. I lay Coco on my legs on her back and she just shakes but doesn't squirm that much or scream or cry.

| My hubby does Ellies for me.He used to use proper dog nail clippers but he finds that ordinary nail clippers work best as she is small. He clips them every 7 to 14 days so she got used to having them done.Front paws one time ,back paws next time. Now at 7 months Ellie thinks she is just having a cuddle with Daddy followed by treats

| i clip my yorkies nails and have never had a problem. i have to do zacs as he wont let a vet do it anyway, he bites and backflips off the table when the vet tried to do it, so the vet could only do his back ones as there was no way zac was going to let him near the front ones, well not without drawing blood and i dont mean zacs lol but if i do it hes fine he just lays there on my lap on his back with his legs up in the air lol

That sounds awesome! I wonder when it's going to come out and how much it's going to cost. Sounds like it will be pricey
