| Neutering and personality changes. Hello everyone, yet another neutering question. As I get nearer to my dogs scheduled neutering time and cannot help and hesitate on the entire thing. My big Nemo (13 pound Yorkie) doesn't display any of the problems that neutering is supposed to help. My little Nemo has turned 7 months and he doesn't mark, only humps once in awhile when playing, and doesn't wander (we live in NYC he's on a lease). My dog has the right combination of playfulness and laziness that makes him fit so well in the house. Our biggest fear is that he would change in his personality; something that I have heard by many people. One of my biggest problem with the entire idea is that people including vets tout the benefits without showing any clear scientific proof. I want to see something written, that is concrete. Is it really beneficial or is it something done and promoted simply to avoid unwanted pregnancies in dogs. One of my close friend has shown that for his dog (Rockweiler) there exist a registry that shows that although neutering does avoid pontential testicular cancer it has also elevated other forms of cancers in that breed. Is there a registry for yorkies? The bottom line is I want my dog not to change, he's perfect the way he is. |

| I had my 10 lb.Toto neutered when he was 6 months old. He has never marked or humped. If fact, he has just learned to lift his leg instead of squating. The funny thing was, he would go to a post or tree or whatever and then lift the opposite leg. He was really confused. I can't see any difference in his attitude or the way that he acts other than I don't have to worry about unwanted behavior around my female toy poodle (she has been spayed).

| We had our German Shepard spayed (2 years ago) and our big lab neutered (last summer) - and neither one of them have changed - at all! It didn't mellow them out, keep them from roaming our land, etc. They are still just the same as they were before. We had Mojo neutered too (right before Thanksgiving) - this was after about 4 or 5 cancelled appts. etc. It is a big deal! You have to think about everything, but we finally did it because of the risks that can occur in the intact males later in life....those out weighed anything else for us. So far, Mojo is the same ole Mojo. He still uses the bathroom the same, but he doesn't hump anymore - I mean, he hasn't even had the notion to like he did before. He is still VERY active and is still has loveable as ever. I too had heard that their behavior can change, but I heard that can happen too if they breed, etc. So, it must be a possibility either way. I truly think he (and you) will be better in the long run after having this done. Mojo was dropped off the day of his neuter at 9:30am and I got to pick him up at 1:00 that afternoon (every vet is different) and he was like nothing had happened....brought him home and he was alittle groggy, but he was fine - in fact, everyone was amazed! We had that done before Thanksgiving and everyone figured he would be grumpy and not feeling well, etc.....but he was his cute loveable self!
