| To Spay or Not to Spay Ok so i have a baby yorkie - only 8 1/2 weeks old - and i know i dont have to make a decision anytime soon - but i have a question about whether or not to get her fixed. What are the advantages and disadvantages? What if i want to eventually breed her? Do i have to worry about her bleeding everywhere? Thanks for any help and advice! | This is what I am experiencing right now.. My 1yr old first heat was eek..yes I had to buy a panties and place a light day pad in it..Her second one has not been that bad (no panties needed) Actually I didn't even notice at first.. My young one.. in her first heat now very very messy. Plus I was very careless and she got tied on day 12..She most likely going to have puppies. So don't be afraid if you want to wait to spay. There is a different responsibility that come with not spaying.. (I have found that out the hard way) It is what will fit you and your life.. and every dog is different Remember everyone has to start some where to learn ... EVEN IN BREEDING... GOOD LUCK...I HOPE THIS HELP YOU SOME

| Hi, Breeding these little dogs is such a complicated thing that unless you really have the time, money and knowledge... I'd spay. At first I didn't want to (believed that they all should have a chance at natures's way but after reading about all the things that can happen to these little girls... I had Mia spayed as soon as I could (I think it was at 6 months). I want her to be around a long time! If I want another baby, I'll get one from a reliable breeder. Good Luck & Welcome to YT

Oh, Thank You. Actually she does't like her picture taken - she'll even get up and turn around when I get the camera out. That was just a lucky catch while she was getting into her box from the last Gift Exchange. Hey, I meant to tell you to do a search (near the upper right hand corner - in the frame) about "breeding". There really is alot of info on this site. These people have and have had Yorkies for many years. There are breeders, groomers, and owners on here who know more than my vet! It'll make you feel better "knowing" all the facts. Hope to see you around!

| Get her spayed!!! No disadvantages only advantages...eliminate the risk of reproductive cancers and a very serious uterine infection that is often fatal, pyometria, dramatic decrease in mammary cancer, no false pregnancies, no heat cycles to go through (and yes she will bleed), no hormone driven behaviors When a spay is performed prior to the first heat period, the risk of mammary cancer later in life is less than 1%. There are NO disadvantages to getting a dog spayed or neutered. They will be happy and healthy, just as before. I am a firm believer that breeding should be left to the professionals - people who have dedicated themselves to bettering the breed and have done the work and the research. So many people buy a puppy and toy around with the idea of breeding them without realizing the time, work and money that it takes. You're right, you do have some time to decide, but don't leave it to late. And I urge you to do your research both on spaying AND breeding. (you can do a search on here - there have been many threads in the past that touch on this subject). Good luck in your decision!

| I didn't realize all that went into breeding these little dogs....and doing it right and doing it well...until I did alot of reading under the 'Breeders' section here and online. There is SO much that can go terribly wrong during a pregnancy AND birth that I would never even consider breeding my little one. The risk to the moms is so great that one really has to be committed to educating ones-self and perhaps learning hands on from a mentor. Plus, there is a risk that a C-section may be required so there is a cost factor to consider as well. Also, from what I've read, it's more beneficial healthwise to the animal to have it spayed or neutered. They have less chance of contracting certain cancers, etc. Surgical risks this day and age are low, so the spay/neuter surgery really isn't as frightening a deal as it once was. Daisysis...I hope that things work out for you and your little one. iheartzoe...if breeding is something you really want to do, why not try to find a mentor to learn from. It would seem that hands on education would be so helpful. There are some wonderful breeders on this site who would be glad, I think, to help out someone wantng to learn. best of luck with your decision. |

| dont breed is my advice. and get her spayed as soon as possible. you wont have the worries of heat and unexpected pregnancy and she'll have a much lower chance of getting cancer.

| I recommend spaying I was so scared to have Little Bit spayed but she did so well and she is just 4 lbs. The biggest problem was keeping her from jumping for the first few days. |
