| I was a little shocked today Long story short: I went to meet some people today that homeschool their children (well, did - all four kids are in college) - I went to get some school books (free) and to talk about school/college/etc. I pulled up to their place and seen these nice kennels in the back. Okay, we go in and talk school for about an hour and then talked dogs for about an hour. They have about five breeds of small dogs. They had four females in the house (2 that had puppies and 2 that were getting ready to). When I first walked in, I didn't even know they had dogs in their house - especially that many and the babies. (meaning, it didn't smell, not loud, not messy, etc - like some I have seen). Anyway, we had a nice chat about how they started breeding and why/how they picked the breeds they had, etc. They showed me their kennels - wow! Those were so nice, high tech and comfy! I always pictured a kennel as cold cages and concrete and unhealthy/sad dogs. They really did not have many dogs, at all, and all of them looked well groomed and cared for. She talked about how they love each one, but know they have to sell them to get by, etc. Talked about the care for them, what all they do for them, etc. Then, puppymills came up in our conversation - I didn't bring it up, but I can't remember what was said about it. Anyway, I told them that there seems to be soooo many of them and it is sad. Well, the guy said that if you can sell 1000's and 1000's of dogs, and have the people to take care of all of those dogs and keep them healthy and cared for, he didn't see a problem in that. he said that most puppymills are created when people get a few dogs, can't seem to part w/ the puppies and it just keeps going and going and the dogs are getting sold when they are not at their best. I see that too, but I think if you are selling 1000's and 1000's of different dog breeds, there is something there - I don't know?! Anyway, I didn't say anything more about puppymills. The lady then talked about how often they are inspected and what that consists of and their work w/ AKC, etc. I knew their dogs were getting a good home and getting well taken care of.............UNTIL................ I asked if they had a website or how they advertised, so maybe I could spread the word. Well, he said that they do not normally sale locally, but would if someone wanted...........I guess I had a confused look on my face because he then said that they sell wholesale (or something like that) and then their puppies go to stores, etc. Wow! I about fell over! I was so upset and sickened. Luckily, we had to go (had a lot to do that day and alotted about two years w/ these people)....I have just thougth about all those puppies all day! They are nice enough people, but after our conversation, I just don't know about them. I'm I being crazy or what??? I just wanted to share because in our area, I have never seen a pet store (besides the cats at the PetsMart from the animal shelter) and I have never met or known anyone who sold their furbabies to pet stores!

| That'd odd - it sounds like they put so much time/money/care/love into these babies to turn around and sell them like that seems odd! Maybe they don't know the lack of care the puppies are getting when they "sell them wholesale" - I don't like that word for a dog/cat/pet - maybe for cows or sheep? None of the larger pet stores in my city sell animals like that. No puppies. There was one lady that opened up a store and she had a terri-poo mix or something, and people would go in there and play with it - I dont like the idea of SO many people playing with a puppy and it being in an open (the roof was open, it kinda looked like a... well - yah a well) with birds and stuff around. She also one time had all these mixed breed puppies (you know the german/lab/rottie/whatever cross mixes that are absolutely adorable when they were puppies) I don't know WHO would ever buy their dog like that... My ex bought a cat from there and it got sick right away and we found out later it was just from a local farm (where they would normally give them away free)...

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Jenn - I'm in NE Okla.. you and I live in the middle of puppymill nation. Many of the mill pets are shipped out across the nation - coast to coast, not necessarily sold nearby. It is a crying shame the answers some have to justify their hideous livelihoods.

| Well it goes to show that not all commercial breeders are bad. But I don't understand either why they would wholesale their puppies if they have nice puppies. They could probably make twice as much money if they sold individually. I just can't imagine having a truck come to pick up a load of puppies, and then not know what they are going through or how they are being cared for. When I hand a puppy over to someone it will have to be someone that I'm sure will love it as much or more than I do. |

| Sorry for being away from the computer for awhile - anyway - it is sad that these poor adorable puppies are getting shipped all over - his words "coast to coast". They didn't seem even bothered by the fact that their puppies were going no telling where. They are nice people, "Christian" people and love their animals. She said that when they got into breeding, they started w/ their first love (pugs) - they did it because they loved the dogs and everything about them. They then got into about 3 more dogs (maltese, jack russells and long hair daschunds) - I think that was all. She said they were all dogs that they have always loved, so therefor, they are treated as family pets. This guy had tubs and tubs of toys, etc for the dogs - so I first thought he sold them to families, you know, sending a "care package" of goodies w/ the puppies. So, I think maybe they are confused as to what they are doing? I don't know. BUT they have been doing this for awhile, so I guess they must know what they are doing. Maybe I do not know the situation....maybe they did try to advertise around the area when they first started this up and they didn't do well or what they had expected? Maybe they didn't know what else to do? I don't know. Anyway, it is just upsetting! I know it is really strange because they actually care for the animals, treat them as pets, have them in the house (some as pets, some pregnant, some w/ pups), have awesome kennels, etc. I just thought it was sooooo odd! My DH told me not to dwell on things like this, but...well, I just can't help it sometimes! hee,hee I just hope those furbabies are being treated well where ever they end up!

| I think it just goes to prove that even the nicest people can be evil. Even murderers can be nice. Maybe these people just dont care enough about the pups to know where there going after there gone. That's great that the puppies are in a loving environment when there born, but what about after they get shipped out?

| Its really sad that some think its "easier" to just sell all the puppies at once to a broker, than take the time to place each pup in a loving home. And being so close to puppymill USA, they probably have a lot of competition in the sales of puppies. Sad, really is. |
