| Travel w/ pets (and those who RV) Okay, I had several travel questions - I have read through most of the older post, but had some questions nontheless......... #1. When you travel w/ your pets and you stop somewhere that they can not go into (grocery store, food place, etc) - what do you do? **Does one of you stay in the car **Do you leave your pets in the car - if so how (like what precautions do you use/what do you do) **Sneak them in inside a carrier/bag - if so what bag do you use and like #2. In the hotel/motel/room - do you ever leave your pet unattended? **Do you put them in a crate or in the bathroom? **Leave a Do Not Distrub sign on the door and let the desk know? **Any advice for leaving them alone in a room? **You never leave them alone For the RV people out there.............. #3. Do you leave your pets in the RV while you go somewhere? **Are they left in the RV at an RV park/camp? Or do you drive it around instead of a car (so like in the parking lot of the place you are stopping at). **Do you feel safe w/ them alone in the RV while you drive your other car somewhere else? Or do they pretty much go where ever you go? **If they are left, what precautions do you use or do to make you worry a little less? #4. Have you ever had any problems (no matter what issues) with leaving your RV hooked up and a camp/park while you drove your car around? OR do most of you drive your RV around w/o pulling another car? **What is your over all impression of RV parks? Do you feel safe there, do you go anywhere else instead of RV parks? This one is not pet related, but just curious while I am on this topic. #5. What is the preferred RV/motorhome - pull behind, fifth wheel - if fifth wheel/pull behind, what do you drive, Class C (driving one) - if Class C, do you pull a car behind you? Okay, I am asking because we are starting to travel more and we normally leave Mojo w/ my parents or my inlaws. We always sold our motorhome this past summer, but are wanting to get another one and we are just curious how everyone does - just getting some ideas! If you want, you can PM or post.........looking for tips/tricks/ideas/thoughts/etc to help me decide what is the best thing to do/ways of doing things.

| I travel alot. I always have the dogs in their pet taxi's and the birds in theirs. If we stop somewhere where the animals can't go in, I always leave them locked in the car. I have one of those battery operated fans so they don't get to hot. I also always park where I can see my vehicle from inside. I never leave them lose in a motel room but always put them in thier crates and a do not disturb sign on the door. I hope this helps some.

| we are currently on vacation and if we go to a restaurant.. we are leaving for one shortly actually.. layla goes in her crate in the backseat of the truck. the weather is such right now that the temp in the truck is perfect... i cover the crate with a blanket (with a spot left for air ) so that no one looks in and sees something they want to take... if it is too hot ... we leave the truck running and go and check on her... and if it is too cold she gets her heater put in with her. we never leave layla alone in the hotel mainly because we stay at hotels that don't allow dogs and we sneak her in.. i wouldn't want to take the risk of having her found by the staff... and layla doesn't do well when left alone (other than in a vehicle.. go figure!) Happy Travels! |

| I took my little guy on a weekend trip. I asked the hotel if they were pet friendly, they charged an extra $10 per day. I left him in the bathroom with his puppy pad and a baby gate in the doorway. We told the hotel we did not need maid service. |

We travel extensively in the summer (when it is usually hot) so when we stop to eat, we often eat (picnic) from the 5th wheel. It is easy to do since you have a refridgerator in the RV. When we go into a restaurant (which we do because we get tired of eating sandwiches), if it is hot, we leave the (diesel) pickup running with the doors locked, but we only sit where we can see it at all times. If it is cool, then we just leave the boys in the pickup, but again, we always sit where we can see them. If we go to the grocery store, then one of us will usually stay in the truck with them. Sometimes it is too hot in the pickup, but OK in the fifth wheel and so we will put them in the fifth wheel while we eat. In that case, we do not have to sit where we can see the truck since they are securely locked in the fifth wheel. I really hate leaving them in the hotel room - and we don't stay in them very often, but sometimes we have to. I leave them out in the room (they are not crate trained) and they do just fine - they are not barkers. I always leave a Do Not Disturb sign on the door - but I ALWAYS worry about them - that someone will come in and take them. When we camp in the RV, we do leave them in the fifth wheel - but they go almost everywhere with us. I lock the fifth wheel and so I don't worry about them while we are gone. If your dogs are barkers, many RV parks will not let you leave them in your RV because if they bark the entire time you are gone (and believe me, many do) then it will disturb the other campers. We always park the fifth wheel and drive around in our pickup. I have never felt uncomfortable leaving the fifth wheel - I think almost all RV parks are safe - I've always felt perfectly safe in any of them and we've stayed a A LOT!! If you have a fifth wheel, you can get a tripod with a lock on it that attaches to the fifth wheel hitch, so that someone can't come hook up to your trailer and drive off with it. I prefer a fifth wheel, because you always have a vehicle to drive. Also, with a fifth wheel, you don't have to maintain 2 engines (the RV engine and the pull behind car engine). We drive a 30 foot fifth wheel and a 1-ton diesel Ford pickup. We love it! We've had our fifth wheel since 1999. A big caution that I would offer is to watch your baby closely when you stop to let them potty. There is so much trash on the ground at gas stations or travel stops. My Rowdy will not eat anything, but Rexy will eat EVERYTHING so I really have to watch him that he doesn't eat any trash. Also, when you are in the RV park, as you know, you have to have your pets on a leash. My boys get tired of the leash all the time (we have a big back yard where they run free everyday) so we take 2 X-pens along to put together so that they can get in them and run off-leash. Good luck!!!

Donating YT 7000 Club Member | We've only traveled once with Maddie. When we took the 10 hour drive home from Ohio. We only stopped twice. Once was to get food. I sat in the car while my mom ran into the subway to get us food. That was at the half way point, so she also went potty there. I made sure that I had a REALLY tight hold on the leash (I put my hand through it then wrapped it around my wrist a few times). and I also took her away from where all the people are. and I did a double check on her harness before I took her out of the car. and we also stopped at a Red Roof Inn to stay over night. We never took her leash off, even when she was in the hotel room. We took the leash we brought, tied it to the one she was wearing, and tied her to the table. (we really didn't want to risk her running off again). When I brought her outside to go potty I picked her up, put her down outside, then picked her up and brought her back in. I didn't let her walk around much out doors. and my friend lived right around the corner, so she came by the hotel room to visit me. I locked Maddie in the bathroom when she came in so Maddie couldn't take off. and we also kept the "Do not disturb" sign on the door and kept the blinds closed so that the maid wouldn't come in.

| #1. Depends on the weather if the temp is just right I leave her in the car tucked away from direct sunlight in doggie purse. We park away from the main parking spaces to prevent her hearing noises that make her scared enough to bark. In a store 15-20 min max. If were at a restaurant I'll go peak in the car after we order our meal and before we order dessert. The purses that work best are the once who look just like purses with a few adjustments you can lift and unzipper flaps for your dog to hang out or they can just sit inside. Everytime I do pull ajah out everybody is amazed that she was even in there. #2. Now a lot of hotels have pets welcomed some for a fee. We left a do not disturb sign on the door. But cleaned up eveyrthing before we left each day.(we didn't want to pay a fee) We never went out wth out her. We only carried purses. When we need her out of the way we put her in there. We never left her alone. Fear she may get out when someone came to clean, or staff might even take her. Sorry no RV experience |

| RowdysMom: Wow! That was extremely helpful! I mean that was everything I was looking for in an answer! HA! Thanks so much! When we had our motorhome - we loved it, until we went to an RV park by a lake and didn't have a way to drive to the lake - unless, we unhooked all the hoses, packed up everything and drove it there. The reason we didn't pull a car behind, was because we had a trailor w/ the big grill, two fourwheelers and our friends 4x4 "mule" or whatever those are called. My DH is wanting a fifth wheel type trailer that is called a toybox or sports utility trailer - it is one that you pull behind your truck (fifth wheel type) and the front of it is the living part and the back part is for hauling fourwheelers, golf carts, etc. That might work out - they come in all sizes. Oh I don't know, it is so hard to think of what you need and want and then to actually find it and afford it! Ha! Thanks again everyone who has posted their experiences! I am such a nervous momma - I worry all the time!

| When I travel someone usually stays in the car with Max and Abbie if we stop somewhere. Abbie doesn't travel well as it is so she freaks out and barks her little head off until you get back into the car. The ONLY time they are unattended is when I drive to my parents' house by myself and I need a potty break . The I usuall park the car so it is visible and run in and out and quickly as I can. I'm always afraid of someone breaking in an stealing them--yes, I'm paranoid . I've not taken them to a hotel but I would never leave them unattended there if we needed to stay in a hotel. It's not just them--I never leave valuables in a hotel room.

| We very rarely have left Hank in the car when we go in somewhere to shop, eat, etc. If so, we park where we can see the vehicle. Hank is good about just laying in the car quietly but I have never felt comfortable for leaving him for any time other than 15 minutes or so if that. We have a motorhome and Hank does very well in that. We lived in it for a year while building our home and he did excellent at the campground. He was fine in there alone, no barking, etc. We just made sure everything was locked and secure. I felt that he was safe there. Of course, he was walked on a leash at all times and, out of consideration and park rules, we picked up after him (unlike some others I saw). We now have added Levi to our family and he hasn't traveled much yet. On route to the groomer, he barked the entire trip!! He isn't used to traveling yet. My husband is in TN now visiting his daughter and grandson and I decided to stay at home because we didn't want to leave both guys in a hotel room for too long of a period since Levi isn't used to it and may bark and bark. We had no other place to stay this trip. Anyway, we figure we'll get the motorhome out of storage soon and start making our trips and visits that way and both dogs will feel at home with their own belongings, etc. |

| Wow! Lots of questions It's good to be researching like that and get to know other peoples' experiences. Good for you! Okay... we really like using a fifth wheel. My husband says they are easier to maneuver into the rv slots, plus easier to pull. We have had a huge one with a bunkhouse in the back (four children). But now we have a 3 horse Living quarters gooseneck (like a fifth wheel, different hitch). when we are camping we like to leave the rv at camp and drive around. We lock everything important up... bike chains etc, and lock the trailer. We have left the dogs in their crates outside (not yorkies, just labs) when we go for a walk and they can't go. But I would never do that with Phoebe. Usually, we put even the big dogs in the rv though. I don't want them stolen anymore than I would want my yorkie baby. When we travel, of course Phoebe is in the truck with us. but we have crates in the rv for our big dogs (labs) which is where they ride. there's just no room in the front of the truck for all the kids and two big dogs. If we are traveling and go into a restaurant, I have a tiny crate for Phoebe in the front of the truck, but I put it on the floor and drape a cloth over it (without covering the side so there is plenty of air) so no one can see her. But if it's summer or even warm spring, I don't leave her in the car at all. Too many dogs die from overheating. I think the easiest way to travel with a yorkie is to make arrangements so you are places where they can stay with you. We are planning to go to dog friendly hotels, and no I probably would not leave her in the room, since ther is room service. Plus I don't think they let you leave them in there. Whew... a mouthful, eh? Hope this helps. It's fun to camp with dogs... deb |

| We took an overnight shopping trip in December, and I took the boys. I did leave them in the suite (Residence Inn). I was nervous about leaving them. I left the Do Not Disturb sign on the door, and I put the big table they have in the little kitchen in front of the door, so that if anyone opened the door, they wouldn't shoot out. I also left blinds closed and prayed a lot. The next day, I took them to the mall in their dog stroller. No one scolded me until near the end of the day I made the mistake of giving them water near an exit( they were still in the stroller, I had just unzipped it a bit). A child approached the stroller, and Mojo ( the pom mix) went crazy growling and barking (he hates males). Unfortunately, that attracted the attention of a security guard, who told me no dogs allowed and not to bring them back to the mall. Boo Hiss. I did stay in the car with the dogs while my family ate dinner. They brought me out something to go. The Residence Inn charges 100.00 non-refundable cleaning fee for a dog! That will be the last time I admit I have my dog with me. My boys are clean to the teeth, potty exclusively on pads, and we left the room spotlessly clean. I always try to leave a hotel room as clean as possible for the sake of the hard-working ladies who clean. I take pads with me into the mall, and put them down inside the ladies room when I potty, so the boys go potty too( have to find a restroom with a door that goes all the way to the floor, so they can't escape the stall. Also,I take chlorox wipes and gloves to clean the floor well before putting the dogs down on it. Having the dogs along did create quite a bit of work for me, plus I got very little shopping done. But I was afraid to leave them home alone overnight. |

| We stayed in a Residence Inn last week too! Our pet fee was ONLY $75.00. My only recourse was to board them at home (something I won't do) or take them with me and pay the $75 - which was cheaper than boarding would have been. The Residence Inn gave me a policy which stated that the maids would NOT come into the room if dogs were present and that the owners had to be there when the maid came. We were supposed to leave a Do Not Disturb sign and a Pet Inside sign on the door when we left them in the room. Well, I did not leave the Pet Inside sign on the door - I thought that I'm not going to TELL someone there are dogs for the stealing in the room, for goodness sakes! But I did leave the Do Not Distrub and Service Later signs on the door. My guys don't shoot out the door, so I didn't have to worry about that. I just worried that a maid or maintenance person would see me walking them, see us leave, and then go in and steal them. We did not leave them for very long and I was very nervous, but they did fine, much better than me, I think.
