| Dog Kennels. I am just curious but are kennels ever ok? Let's say a breeder breeds about 4 different breeds. They are all housed in a kennel that appears to be clean. However, it is still a kennel. Is this something that is acceptable to you?

| I can only tell you what I would do. Although I am sure that in certainn circumstances kennels are ok, I would only purchase a Yorkie from a responsible breeder who considered their dogs to be part of their family. Last edited by chattiesmom; 12-28-2006 at 09:57 PM. |

| I must ammend the above post slightly. I personally know a couple of very responsible breeders who ONLY breed Yorkies and do have a kennel where some of thier dogs are kept some of the time. Their kennel is like the HILTON and is cleaner than most people's homes. The mass breeder who has several breeds of dogs living in full time kennels I find totally disgusting |

| i think kennels are ok to a point.. you mean like an x-pen?? i think if you have more than one "Family" of pups it would be a good idea to keep them together.. it's when they are dirty... and cramped... and the dogs never get to leave that it becomes a problem |

| I was talking about people who breed dogs. I came across a website that bred at least 4 or 5 different breeds. The site had pictures of the kennels that they were kept in. The site claimed to have produced a lot of champions. However, the dogs are still raised outside in kennels. To me that is a mill. Doesn't really matter how many "champions" they have. At least to me it doens't.

I feel sorry for any dogs living in kennels fulltime ...no matter how clean... it's still a prison of sorts. I guess I'm all about the home enviornment too but with some mass breeders - they have to have seperate living facilities. But that's what the are to me - mass breeders. Anyone can take nice pictures and show a clean place - doesn't mean it's like that all the time.

| I sure am glad I am not the only one who feels this way. I have heard many breeders and those of us with just "pets" say NOT to buy from places like this. Then I turn around and see them buy from places like this anyway. I don't see how anyone could buy from someone who raises their dogs in kennels. I look at Diesel and just cringe to think of all the adults and pups that some people raise in those kennels.

For a puppy, be it for pet or show, find a responsible breeder that has immersed themselves in the breed, cares about the breed, actually does know more about the breed than you do, is interested in the health and welfare of their puppies, and is there 24/7 to answer questions or help you in anyway they can once the sale has occured.

| I would NEVER buy a pet from a breeder with multiple breeds in a kennel atmosphere. You are investing not just your money, but your love and care in a pet that you want for loving, trouble free companionship for many years. These animals can live a long time. For a purchase like this, I would do extensive research and find a reputable home breeder who does this for love of the breed, not purely for the money. They are out there. Buying from a kennel, you are running the risk that you get an animal with health problems and behavioral issues. If you ARE willing to deal with a few issues and have a big heart you may consider rescue. At least you would have an idea what issues you would be dealing with rather gambling on a kennel purchase. |
