| Yorkie eating Poop! Hello Everyone! My name is Ana, I'm new on this board, and for Christmas "Santa" brought me a male, 8 week old Yorkie that I named "Brownie". I have begun to train him and he already went to the vet for all his vaccinations. The problem is that I believe he is eating his poop. Has this happened to anyone? He doesn't do it in front of me....but I found a bit of poop residue on the floor of my bathroom and I believe he ate it. Please help me! Thanks! |

| I have seen lots of people post about their poop eaters. There is a search feature on the forum that should pull up a bunch of info on it and solutions. I think puppies do this for various reasons. I wonder if a basic reason would be that they copy their mothers in everything they do, they probably see their mother's cleaning up their poop and why wouldn't they check it out too? LOL I think most grow out of it. I hope anyway! |

| Queen of Poop Eating! Hey I have 4, My 2 Adults, 1 male and 1 female, are 3 and 2 yrs. old now. They both ate their own Pooh as well as; Cat, Duck, Goose, racoon and any other kind of pooh, except other dogs (Thank God) I went through every trick in the book to try to get them to stop! The Vet. gave me pills, powder to put into their food etc. I fed them certain foods to discourage them but after exhausting all over the counter remedies, in the end the only thing that works is to watch them like a Hawk, and pick-up their feces immediately after! Outdoors I make sure I keep them away from anything they might eat, but they're quick, basically I try to keep them away from the "Temptation". I'm going through it now w/their 2 female puppies that are 17 wks. old. But the male puppy that I sold never did it? I also find that alot is based on my "Reaction" and how I respond, I used to get grossed out and scream and get all excited.....so they would run around like we were playing a Game? Now I don't react at all, if they do, do it. I just say a firm "NO Bad Girl", so far that seems to be working besides monitoring their food intake, I also have them on Royal Canine instead of Science Diet/Puppy food so instead of pooping 6 times a day it's only twice a day which helps. Good Luck! |

| Thank You both for your replies! This morning when I woke up, the bathroom was a mess! There was poop everywhere, but it was so spread out, that I couldn't even tell if he ate it or not. I've also been feeding him Royal Canine. He seems to poop at max, 3 times a day. Have a great day! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Chloeandj is correct, this is a maternal behavior and not as strange as we think. For more information, check out this site. http://www.petstyle.com/dog/health_w...ection=feeding It does concern me when you say that there was poop everywhere. That's a lot of poop. I know a lot of people use Royal Canine and love it; you are using puppy formula right? His poop should have the consistency of a tootsie roll. Some say that they eat their poop because there is still nutrition left in it and the puppy realizes that. Do you keep food and water in the bathroom at night? Nancy |

| Nancy, Thank you for your reply! When I said that there was poop everywhere, I meant that he had accidentally stepped on the poop and then walked around. It wasn't that he had pooped multiple times. I am feeding him Royal Canine, the puppy version. His poop seems normal. It is probably a little thicker than a tootsie roll, but other than that, it is good. At night, I have only been giving him water in the bathroom. I am trying not to feed him so late because I am afraid he will poop, and make the same mess he did yesterday night. |

| My boy used to eat his poop all the time when we got him at 12 weeks old. He finally stopped. He is 6 months old now.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I know for a fact that Izzy eats her pooh to hide it from me... if she has pooh some where in the house, even on a per pad...she moves it to somewhere I will not see it...but I can tell she did it cuz I can smell it..lol...she is very smart and the looks she gives me when she is trying to hide it are "priceless"..

| I have 4 yorkies, Hobbes is the largest male, he will wait for Tessie to poop and run and eat it before she finishes. But recently he has been eating any he can find. I am going to try the pineapple again and be more consistent. My vet thinks it is a dominant thing over the female because she is the alpha dog, also he can smell the undigested food. They don't chew, only swallow and act like they are starving all the time.

| Austin eats his poop also. It kinda depends what he ate tho. I asked his vet about it and she told me its okay for him to eat his poop. That is just too gross for me. But he is one funny guy. I see him from the corner of my eye pooping and if I don't look, he reaches over to eat it. And when I do catch him, he runs for his life.. LOL I dont chase him. He's way too fast. Let it be. As long as its not another dogs poop.
