| ? about rabies shots.... My friend has a yorkie from the same litter as mine. they are both almost nine months old. mine has been vaccinated and everything. But for some reason her vet says her dog doesn't weigh enough for a rabies shot but has recieved all her other shots. i have never heard of a dog not weighing enough for a rabies shot, have you? she doesn't weigh more than 2.5 lbs. have any of you had this problem?

| depends on the vet It is a very powerful shot. My vet is very careful as to when she gives it. Age, weight, and even if the dog has the smallest cold...she is very careful. Some vets dont' see it that way and will do it at earlier weights and ages. suzie |

| The shot is the same for all size dogs... My vet says most times they give a great dane the same shot as a yorkie! I was very upset by this so he bent the rules and reduced the amount given...! He also said some vets put lepto in with the Rabies shot... Lepto shots can really make a dog sick. He doesn't even have lepto in his office, but if a dog needs it he will get it. He said he gave a dog Lepto once and it killed the dog. He only thinks a dog needs it if they are a hunting dog...where they may come in contact with lepto.</IMG>

| The vet that I had my dog neutered at (not my regular vet) has had some very interesting experiences with rabies shots and has done a ton of research on the disease and vaccine. He reduces the shot by a lot and especially bases the amount he gives on size of dog. there is an article that was published about the new vaccine protocols and it talks about why they are goign to 3 year schedule (even though it could be longer). Very interesting. Unfortunatly, according to this article, loss of income does play a role in deciding these things however I don't think every vet is like that but they are represented by a vet board of people who may be worried about that. I wish I could remember where the article is. I went to a vet when I first got my puppy who wasn't even aware of the new protocol. He said "we dont' overvaccinate here" but according to the new protocols...he does. We don't go back there. He also wanted to give shots to my dog when he was too young, sick with kennel cough, and not good for the breed (according to my breeder). We don't go back there. I think there are some awesome vets out there and I think there are some that just think differently and we should go with the one we feel comfortable with. suz |
