| Yorkies & Parrots Has anyone had parrots and tried to introduce a puppy to the family? This is my dilemma. I have two african greys that do not get jealous of attention to to others. I live in Florida and they are in the screen room playing most of the day unless it gets cold here. I have another little parrot that is in the house and even if someone comes over he gets jealous and wants to be with his mommy. My thought is to keep them separate but in sight for a few weeks so that the novelty wears off. Other than that I don't know how to make this work. I'm sure that I am not the first family to have yorks and parrots living in harmony together. Please if anyone has any insight I would greatly appreciate your expertise |

| Yorkies and Parrots Hi there, Im very new here, and I dont even have a yorkie yet. And, before, I get one, Im really researching,,,especially the parrot angle. I do have two parrots, 1 african grey and 1 white cap pionus that Ive had for 17/16years. I have two large lab mixes and I had a 17 y/o mini schnauzer (she passed last year) I never left the birds alone with dogs or my cats. But, maybe once or twice a year one may decide to take flight around the living room or climb down from their playpen. Hubby and I taught dogs and cats (yes u can train cats) to "freeze" when a bird was involved and they did. Havent had any issue in 17 years, but, again, Im real careful But, Im a little concerned with the yorkies,,they are natural little hunters, from what I understand. Im real interested in all responses. I love this forum Thx Suzanne |

| I had a small parrot (a Concure) that I had to rehome when I got my little Yorkie pup. My parrot loved getting out of his cage. He loved to spend time with people and play on his playgym. He was clipped and generally fluttered to the floor when he was startled or tried to fly. This is when we had problems. As careful as I was with my new little pup - whenever my bird got on the floor - that little Yorkie would totally instantly appear out of no where - and starting trying to play with the bird. Of course, his playing - (pouncing on) - could have killed the little bird or hurt him very quickly. About the 4th time - I got to the bird before any damage was done - I thought to myself that I just had to find him a new home. Because if anything every happened to him, I would never forgive myself. I hadn't had the bird a long time - I had him about 6 months and had the pup about 2 months before I decided to rehome the bird. He did go to a wonderful wonderful home - and I can't believe how much I miss him... every day still. He was an absolute playful affectionate little doll - and as smart as can be. But - my other two dogs never went near the bird if he ever landed on the floor - they usually went the opposite direction... I would think that a larger parrot could pretty well hold its own with a little dog - but I sure can't be sure about that. It will be interested to find out what others have to say. Carol Jean |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I'm not sure if our experience is typical or not, but we have a green-winged macaw who has gotten along great with a lab, a chihuahua and now two Yorkies. They don't exactly play, but there is no hostility between the birds and the dogs. There was curiousity in the beginning, and Eddie was a little pushy. But the bird stood up to him, and that was enough to convince him to be nice. Now they are all at home sitting on their mama's lap together.

| suz15 how funny. Our households are very similar as my other little parrot is a white capped too. He is my darling little boy. I also don't have my Brissy yet. I get her New Years day. I am going to call my vet's office to make my coming home appointment and I will ask that she return a call to me so that I can ask her the best way to make this family work. She is an expert avian vet (doggies too). I'll post what she says. Rehoming my parrots is out of the question. We will make this work. I think the key is a well trained puppy. |

| I have 2 sun conures. I have 3 yorkies and 2 cocker spaniels too. I put a baby gate up to the bird room when the dogs have free roam of the house. At different times during the day I put the dogs in another room with a baby gate up and lots of chew toys and then get my birds out to play with them. Every one is happy and healthy and no one gets eaten this way.

| I have a B&Gold and an African Grey. I also have a gate at the entry of the bird room but when the birds are in the living room with us in the evenings, the pups are fine with them. My Bully is very intimidated by them and the rest just want to smell. I would never leave them alone together as anything could happen.

| I have a budgie, if you consider her as a parrot. She never run from my yorkie boy. She stood up to him and bites his nose. He will try to play with her like another puppy but never try to eat her. She is not clipped so she can fly to her cage which way up high whenever she wants and hangs out at her playgym which is lower. She sometimes tease my boy to play with her...I guess she is a bit nutty.

| I have an African Grey, too. When she is out and tries to fly and ends up on the floor, just like some of you others - my Yorkies are there in a flash trying to bite her. My Mini Schnauzer doesn't do this - she finally learned. My cats stay away from the bird altogether. I'm hoping the Yorkies fascination with Cleo will fade... omega |
