| Update On Tia & Cali Tia had her surgery on Friday (removal of 2 retained baby teeth) and it went very well!! She is already back to her old, sweet self. The doctor also commented on how sparkling white her teeth are! I was very proud. Now about Cali ... she was supposed to be spayed, have any retained baby teeth removed and have 2 dew claws removed. But all 3 vets refused to operate on her. In fact, they said absolutely not! They said she's an extreme high risk. They weighed her and she is actually smaller than I thought -- she's only 1 lb and 2 ounces at almost 8 months old. All 3 vets highly recommended that I: 1. Wait until she's older 2. Wait until all of her adult teeth come in (so that we can do everything in one operation) 3. Help her gain a few more ounces (about 2-3 ounces max -- it may not sound like a lot but for her tiny frame it's plenty) 4. Have a team of specialists perform the operation Spaying her will be VERY expensive (we're talking anywhere from $1,500 - $2,000). Plus, they will want to run a series of blood tests before the operation and keep her in the animal hopsital after the operation for a few days or until they feel it's safe to bring her home. Other than that, all 3 vets agreed that Cali is an extremely well bred and healthy dog. They said she may be small but she's very healthy. They all loved her and were kissing her the entire visit. And she was just lapping up all the attention ... the little ham. So please, if anyone knows what I should feed Cali or any supplements to help her gain a few ounces, please please please let me know! PS - I've been thinking about the pros and cons of spaying. I am a firm believer in spaying/neutering your pets (unless they are being used for breeding). But I don't want to send my baby off for a routine spay only to lose her. I just don't know what to do. I don't have to make a decision now (I have time still) and I will definitely meet with a wide variety of different specialists and get their opinions on the situation. Any ideas?

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | I know how you feel. I have two Chi's that I don't know what to do about spaying. Of course one is Tia (the cleft palate) and her mom who they lost while being put under, so I'm scared to have her put under again!!! I don't know what to do either. I'm glad your Tia is feeling herself and did well !!!! |

I balled my eyes out at the vet's office. Just ask Gina (Lexi Rae), she knows because once I left the vet and was driving home I called her and cried on the phone to her for a good 15 minutes. I just don't know what the heck to do about this.

| I don't think you should have her fixed. She's not at any risk to be bred so why do it? I know they say for some health reasons too but I've had dogs live to 15 years that weren't fixed and never had any health problems. Why risk losing her when honestly, it's not necessary? Also, dew claws are a pain to clip but it's also an optional surgery. Really the only important one would be retained baby teeth, which only need to be removed if you're vet thinks they should. Let her get a little older and bigger(she will gain weight, everyone does as they age, even teeny tiny pets).

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | hon...I feel for you - and sending you a big hug I know how scary that must be thinking of having it done....You CAN opt out of the spay if it's that dangerous ...I would - but what about her teeth ? That would really worry me and if they don't fall out ...what can they do that's safe ??? |

| I'm glad to hear TeeTee is doing so great. I'm all for spaying and neutering but I think in this case, if it were me, I would put it off indefinitely.

Her dew claws keep getting caught on the carpet. What if the next time one gets caught and it RIPS? She'd have to be put under to have it removed. All these questions keep popping up in my head. What if she breaks a leg and needs surgery? What will happen to her? I can't stress enough what a nervous wreck I am!! I've been crying about this all weekend. I can totally not have her spayed but what about everything else? It's such a big gamble.

I hope this gets worked out - I know I'd just be a wreck with a dog that small even without this kind of problem and I can't even comment on the cost of the spay - HOLY COW. There's got to be a way to get those little teeth out without putting her under all the way.... | |

| If she is in a situation where she cannot be impregnated, I would definitly not spay her - I think you have to balance the risks and in Cali's case the risk would be higher to be hurt in surgery if there is no way she can get pregnant. A heat season only lasts a couple of weeks and if you don't have any other male dogs that are not neutered - there would not be a problem. Just keep her inside at all times during those two weeks. Does that make sense? As far as the dew claws - keep them clipped as short as you can when you do your grooming of her. The teeth - I'm not sure - but if you keep them as clean as you do - wouldn't it be less of a problem even if they are crowded. I just think anesthesia and surgery are more of a risk than people realize - if you have ever seen a dog be put under or opened up you would know what I mean. |

| I have no advice, but am sending prayers your way. Perhaps talking to some of the specialists would help you make up your mind.

| My vet said that if Hootie retained any baby teeth AFTER her spay, then I could bring her in and they would just pop the teeth out really quickly without putting her under. Maybe you could call around to several vets and see if they could do this for her teeth. As for her dew claws, I would just keep them trimmed really well and not worry about getting them removed. And I would put off the spaying indefinately. It's not worth the risk. |

| I know you are very scared right now, but you will find it in your heart to know what to do. These tinies need so much more care and worry; but they are so special. Make a list of pros and cons, and maybe that will help. You also have the gift of the love and care all your friends on YT to help you. Sometimes there is no right or wrong answer. We will have you in our prayers, and your sweet baby too.
