| Question about silky's? In my local newspaper there is an ad for a female silky terrier, does not say how old it is just says a puppy and that it looks just like a yorkie, and the phone number. My question is (I know there have been previous threads about this but I cant find any) what are the main differences between them and a yorkie? How much in price due they vary from a yorkie? I looked them up some and I seen that it says there coats are different and there standard weight is 8-11 pounds. My hubby remembers before people saying something about the colors of there eyes when you take a pic(maybe this has nothing to due with what I am talking about) but just wondering, plus does anyone have a silky and a yorkie pic that i could see the difference in, if at all? I have not called yet, will in the morning, even though it is probably already sold, THANKS!

| Ok now someone really has to help me here, me and hubby are in dispute about Prince and weather he is a yorkie or a silky. After posting i did more research and looked at more pictures, can anyone look at him and tell me please? I could care less what he is but his papers say yorkie and some of you might know what it is like when you bicker with a loved one, you want to find out who is right!

| A silky is a breed that came from crossing Australian Terriers to Yorkshire Terriers. So, it is often difficult to tell them apart. A silky averages 10 pounds where Yorkies are supposed to be under 7 pounds -- but we all see Yorkies over standard and there are probably silkies that are under their average too. The silkies have a single coat like a Yorkie but it does not grow to floor length. They have a greater variation in the blue, silvery blue being okay -- where the standard for Yorkies is to remain steel blue. But again, we all have seen plenty of Yorkies that lighten to a silvery color too. I have to say I would not always be able to tell the difference. I have seen AKC registered Yorkies that I thought fit the Silky standard better. I have not seen a registered Silky up close but the pictures are very close. Here is the Silky Club of America si and it does have a page about telling the difference between the three breeds: http://silkyterrierclubofamerica.org/

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | From your picture you posted I would say that Prince's head is more in line with a yorkie than a silky. (The Silky have a longer muzzle and when mature the Silky will be a tri-color with a little silve or fawn on the top of the head instead of just the two colors of a yorkie. Also the Silky is a lower set and longer pup than the yorkie. We have a new Silky pup....but you can not get a good sense from the puppy pictures of what they look like grown. I can tell you that there coat is easier to manage as it is not a long and you do not keep the hair in top knots.) Good luck......not sure about pricing differences in the average Silky. (We bought one from a show breeder that is a show prospect.)

No Longer a Member | Your Prince sure is a handsome little guy. I have never quite understood the difference in the two. Wondered myself about Giz when he was younger, I don't have papers on him as he was a gift from the kid's dad and won't be bred. |

| I met a silky at the dog park and yours looks like a silky to me. I think Yorkies have sweeter, more refined facial features than the Silkies.

| Silkys and yorkies are really hard to tell apart. Alot of larger yorkies look like silkys. My groomer thought My Chachi is a silky because he looks so different than my Jewels. Chachi has a long foxy nose where Jewels has the small button nose. Chachi is a yorkie though he and Jewels have the same father. My quess is yours is a yorkie but if you have questions I would call your breeder

| He looks Yorkie to me. Not a foxy looking as a Silky, but as mentioned before some Yorkies look like Silkys and some silkys look like Yorkies. To get a good picture of both you can go to akc.org and look up the breed standards and find a picture there. Also at puppyfind.com you can look up the breed discription and get a good picture of each one there.
