| Big Dogs & Yorkies: Can they be friends? My boyfriend and I have a Pom (8lbs) and a Yorkie (2 1/2 lbs). We're thinking of getting a much larger dog for protection. Jimmy works graveyard shifts, so I'm alone most of the night. Does anyone have yorkies and large dogs? Do they usually get along ok? I'm worried my babies might get hurt unintentionally from playing. What do you all think? We're thinking bullmastiff since they're usually pretty docile. |

YT Addict | My Alex grew up with my parents Golden Retrievers. Right now my parents have two Goldens and a Yorkapoo. The female Golden is older and she is great with the little ones. They little boys just love her. My parents used to have a male Golden that died in November. He was spectacular with the little ones. He would watch out for them and protect them from people and even crows. In December my parents got a Golden puppy. He is good with the little dogs, but he doesn't realize that he could hurt them. Once he gets older we are hoping he will recognize that fact. My little guy just knows enough to get out of the way when the pup is a round. The poo doesn't think he has to he tries to take the puppy on. But the pup has never done anything to harm the littles ones. He just tries to get them to play or accidently will do things when he is being his big silly self. I think most of it has to do with the training and realizing that any dog will have a puppy stage. We shall see if he ever grows out of it.

| when i first got sebastain i had a rottie i must say i was very nervious when i brought sebastain home but they got along great played tug of war and everything. Then i got jasmine (yorkie) and my nala (rottie) didnt really care much for her she didn't do anything to her but growl at her once in awhile but jasmine was a pest she always was licking nala in the mouth and stuff like that nala would let sebastain do it but if jasmine did she would growl and get up and move. It was very hard on sebastain and jasmine when nala passed away they were depressed for about 2 months (as we all were very down) |

| Read Lexy's post about my big dog Cinder! I think its called Cinder the gweatest dog awive! Cinder is a black lab mix and is a wonderful watchdog and sooooogentle with the little ones! Her head is as big as Lexy and she is so kind and patient with her. I would recommend a lab for their temperament with children and little dogs.

| My cousin and her husband have an English Mastiff. Earlier this week they took a family member's sick Shih Tzu home to nurse her back to health. The mastiff is so gentile and calm. My cousin said it seemed like Abe (the mastiff) like the little Shih Tzu, but that the smaller dog was apprehensive around Abe. |

| Our Chelsea is a 40# mixed breed terrier, who was 10 years old when I first got Maggie. It was love at first sight. (I must admit that when Chelsea first came to live here, there were already resident two small dogs. When Blarney and Chooch died within 3 months of one another, poor Chelsea was LOST). Chelsea was protective of Maggie from the start. (Once when I had the two of them out for a walk, we were attacked by a Rotty whose mother had just let him out of the house without a leash...third person attacked by that dog that month. The city made the parents put him down! Anyway, Chelsea absolutely put herself between the Rotty and Maggie and I. Chelsea took the worst of it, as the dog got her by the neck and started throwing her back and forth. I had to fall onto the Rotty and pry it's mouth open...crying hysterically all the while.) Recently, we added Molly to the family. Very funny the first few days when Molly tried to interest Maggie in playing with her, and Chelsea kept getting between them and nosing Molly away from her. I'm not sure she believed the baby was going to hurt Maggie (2 pounds vs. 4 pounds). I think she just knew that Maggie wasn't interested, and, after all, Maggie IS her puppy! |

| I <3 Goldies, too! My two older (6 years) Golden retrievers are absolutely wonderful with mom's little wire hair fox terrier. I was worried as to how they would act with her but that are so sweet and even protective! I'm so proud of my babies

| The short answer is yes, but I just think you have to be careful. My westie and my standard poodle are tolerant of the yorkies and will even play with them someitmes. My poodle is real light (doesn't weig much) but he can be a bit of a "klutz" so I always supervise and don't let them get too out of control. |

| Big Dogs Stewie loves my brother's Shar Pei. They didn't like each other at first, but now they are perfect gentlemen to each other and love to play. Thunder is very obedient and smart. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...le/thunder.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...lle/thundo.jpg

| Daisy weighs in at about 3 1/2 pounds. Her sister's are our 160 lb Saint Bernard, 100 lb Collie & a 40 lb Basset hound. She actually gets along best with our Saint Bernard. You can always tell when they hang out together- Daisy comes out looking like she just came out of the tub.

| Yes, can't we all be friends I have two male yorkies that are small, one is about 6 lbs and the other about 8. My daughter has an 80 lb year old yellow lab and for Thanksgiving we all went to her house. I took my babies and her future SIL had her female springer spaniel there also. We put all of them in the back yard, They played wonderfully together. Things got a little wild at one point and the lab got a little rough with my smallest one and he jumped into one of the patio chairs and went nose-to-nose with the lab and gave him hell. The lab backed off, and we all laughed. I would never leave my boys with a dog that I considered aggressive, but I knew my daughters lab was just a big baby and both my boys think that they are great danes. |
