| Potty inside or out? I just have a question. I have a nine week old girl who is very good with using the potty on her pee pee pads. But I really want to crate train her to go outside, not in the house at all. However I am worried about her being too young (since she hasn't had all her shots, should I wait until she is twelve weeks?). She only weighs 1lb, 9 ounces, and lord, she just looks so small, and it is cold here in Georgia in the mornings and evenings, and........I don't know what to do. It seems if she got a hold to some virus, the poor thing wouldn't stand a chance. Soooooo, wait, or get started on the outside right away? (if we go outside, then that means I have to get the harness , which likes about as much as you'd like someone sticking needles in your eyes , but that's a whole nother thread!) Also, at night, I have her wire crate inside of a 4x4 ex-pen, her puppy pad on one side, her water bottle on the cage, and her food. I have been leaving her door open to her crate so that she can get out and use the bathroom on the pad (which she's been doing pretty good the last couple of days), but again, is this good thing to do? I want her to be able to hold it through the night (I cut down the water and food intake at 8pm), not get into the habit of waking up every night to pee. She doesn't seem to have to boo-boo through the night, just pee-pee. If I cut off her water a little earlier, maybe we'd have better success? I just want her to pee outside, basically!!! I guess what I am saying is, if I keep up with the pee-pee pad, is it going to be hard to transfer that to outside peeing when she is 16 weeks old and has had all her shots, or should I just get started now. Sorry about the rambling.

| I also use the pee pee pads. It's so much easier. Both of my girls are pad trained. The older one will go outside and on the pad. But my little one uses the pad exclusively. In fact, we just went on vacation and when we stopped for potty breaks, she wouldn't go on the grass. I had to lay a pad out in the back of the truck for her to go. |

| I think pee pad is much better. I have a 6 months old that trained outside. I would love to have her trained in pee pad. Although we live in California, it will be difficult during rainy or cold day to potty outside. She is trained outside and I am happy but just wondering does anyone have their yorkie trained in pee pad after trained outside ? |

| Venus's first week, I started her pottying outside. She was doing good then I pee pad trained her. Now she'll do both, outside and pee pad. I know with my older yorie, in cold weather, he's learned to potty fast, and get back to the door! I'm in south AL. |

| Maizee uses potty pads too. She likes it a lot better in the winter when she can winkle inside since it's warmer. But, she also is potty trained for outdoors. It's easier when she can do both so when I cannot make it home for her to go potty, she can go on her pads. |

| my lucy ate the pads-so you are better off than I was -we live in Denver, co and she is very good about going outside-even in the snow. We started going to a specific spot (not too far from the door) and I gave her little cut up hotdogs or treats and she goes outside now-we started with newspaper training, but she would go on magazines or whatever was laying around-that had to stop. maybe when yours gets a little bigger, you could try going outside.... lucy was funny, she would hold it when it was raining, or snowing at first and doesnt like the rocks to touch her feet, so she walks thru the pebbles on her tiptoes... she is such a princess... good luck ! |

| I have never used wee wee pads and can't speak for or against them. I have always trained my dogs to go outside. I live in NJ, my yorkie loves to be outside rain or shine so far. When I first got her I threw her a party everytime she went to the bathroom outside. I also rewarded her for making noise near the door to go outside. I still use a crate for her if I will be gone for more than 2 hrs. I believe that you really can't 100% trust a dog to be housebroken until they are 2 yrs. old. |

| I started training both of mine to go potty outside when I brought them home at 8 weeks. The longer you use the pee pads, the more confused she will be about going potty outside. You should pick either pee pad or outside and stick to that method only...don't mix the methods bc that will only confuse her. And as long as she is not going places where there are tons of dogs, like a park, it should be fine for her to start learning to go potty outside. I would NOT cut off her food or water at any point in the night. These little guys can get dehydrated or hypoglocemic so fast...her food and water need to be available to her at all times. And because she is little, she is going to have to go potty in the middle of the night. That is just part of owning a yorkies, espeically a puppy. My 14 month old yorkie still gets up most nights to go potty outside. If she sleeps in her crate at night, you need to have the crate in your room so you can listen for her to wake up at night and if she does wake up, take her outside to potty. The easiest thing would be to let her just sleep in bed with you so you will know when she wakes up and then just take her outside. As for the rest of the day and crate training, here is an EXCELLENT article and sample schedule on how to crate train/potty train your puppy: http://www.darnfar.com/Dog%20Trainin...ng_a_puppy.htm I crate trained and outside potty trained BOTH of my yorkies. I think outside is better because I just don't think a dog should think it is alright to go potty inside, no matter where it is. Also, when we go visit family and friends, it would be so embarrassing to have that pee pad in their house for my dogs to go potty on. You just don't know how people feel about your dog going to the bathroom in their house, no matter where it is. Also, you live in Georgia, and like Alabama, it really doesn't get that cold here. I got my first yorkie in December and he did perfectly fine in the dead of winter going potty outside. Actually, I think they do BETTER being potty trained during the winter because they don't want to play outside. They go outside, do their business, and wanna come right back in. SO, sorry to be so winded, but I would go ahead and start teaching her to potty outside and follow the crate training advice in that article. |

| We just got a little girl that is 10 weeks and are working on going outside. We have a little fenced off area where no other dogs can get to so I don't worry about her catching anything. Also since the night we brought her home we have been putting her in a little kennel at night (since the second night she has slept all night long, lucky us). But when she happens to whine or bark first thing in the morning we let her out asap. I kind of feel bad bc our other 2 sleep in our bed, but when we first got them they did the crate thing also. It seemed to work well. I also agree that if you have them so they go on a pad it kind of sucks for other people when you go to visit them. My mom hates dogs in the house and is so freaked out by the thought of one peeing in her house. Even if it is on a pad. We had a litter of pups and took them with us to visit once and at 8 weeks we had them trained to use the pad, but that didn't matter to my mom. those dogs where peeing and crapping in her home, and I thought my mom would never let us come back to visit. Best of luck no matter what route you take.
