Giving Medicine and Getting Groomed Okay...let me start with the first question.....how do you make your dogs take their medicine..I am supposed to be giving Maximus 1/4 of a pill of hydrocordone and his liquid medicine everyday for 10 days. 1st day---chopped up the pill and put a little water so I could squirt in his mouth..NO GOOD, 2nd day (today) chopped up pill and put on his nutrical...better, are there any other suggestions for pill medicine? The liquid has basically just come down to be squirting it in between his teeth because his jaw just locks...lol Next question.....how long before they can go to the groomer (how old)....and does anyone have any suggestions in Staten Island or NYC area...are the vets usually good with stuff like that or a Petsmart? The vet says he has some little hairs in his ears and I can't bring myself to hurt him by plucking them out Thanks again for any help!!!

| When mine have to take pills I wrap a little piece of cheese, or the peanut butter slices you get from Petco around the pill and it works most of the time. I've also bought the pill pocket, 10 bucks for a small bag, at the pet store that is a little treat you put the pill inside and my dogs do well with those too. But they are so expensive I usually just use cheese or peanut butter slices. I've taken mine to petsmart and the vet for grooming and didn't like either. I looked and looked and finally found a lady that does it from her home and I think they get more personal attention that way. The vet charged me 55.00 for a nail trim and trimming a FEW hairs on Bentley and I'll never go that route again! As far as hold old when they go, I guess that would depend on how many shots they've had and how much they weigh. I'm sure someone else can advise on that. Hope this helps

Take the pill and wrap it in American Cheese or cover it with peanut butter( I prefer the cheese). Then give it to your dog as a treat. I've also stuck small pills in soft treats or in a piece of meat(chicken, beef, liver, etc...) Do not take your puppy to the groomer until he has all his puppy vaccination. I hope this information will help

Do you put the pill whole in the cheese or do you crunch it up? He is only 11 weeks and 2.4 lbs....does that matter or the cheese it still okay?

| I am thinking at that age you may want to chop it up and put it in the cheese. Mine have big teeth, LOL!

Poor baby. It sounds like he has a lot of problem already. I hope it isn't collapse trachea. I assume it is pretty small 1/4 of a pill. I wouldn't chop it up unless you think it is too big to swallow. To make it easier, give him little bit of cheese without the pill first to get him excited about the treat and then give him the treat will the pill. Most of the time they don't even taste it, they swallow it whole.

QUOTE=luzangela428]Maximus still needs 1 more round of shots...which at this rate....lol, I had to cancel this week because they said he had a collapsed trachea and put him on medicine and then another vet said kennel cough...next week he has to take his lyme disease (they won't do them both in same day)...guess because he's so little???...and then following week 3rd set, plus heartwork preventative. Thnaks for answers....do you keep the 1/4 pill as a whole...or chop it up in the cheese?[/QUOTE] Is there a particular reason why you are getting him the Lyme disease shot? Did your vet tell you that you should. I had a 12 lb. dog get very sick from a lyme disease shot once and I am now afraid to get one for Syd who is only 4.5 lbs. Anybody know anything about it?

I am giving him the lyme disease shot at my vet's advice...but also there is a greenbelt (basically a protected forest) across the street from my apartment and the mosquitos and bugs in there must be rampant so I didn't think it was questionable?....I thought all dogs got the shot...do you think maybe I should get a second opinion?

Lyme I understand why you want the shot. It is probably a very good idea in your area. I would just keep a close eye on him after the shot and if it doesn't agree with him then I wouldn't do it again. Maybe they have made scientific advancements in the shot since my dog had it. Angel (my 12 lb. poodle) got feverish and sick to her stomach. It lasted until about 24 hours after the shot was given. But you know their little bodies all react differently to these things. Maybe Angel was just alergic. Let me know how it goes.

Oh no....lol...Maximus has not had good reactions any time he has gone to the doctor...to be honest if he didn't need the shots I wouldn't make him get them because he becomes so lifeless and sad for the whole day...I will keep you posted it was rescheduled till next Sat. ....Thanks
