| Yet another new mommy question! My baby is spending yet another day with me while I am at work..I have not had it in me to find him a puppy sitter yet so I am just bringing him in here for now..I have a few concerns though...He isn't wanting to eat, so far nothing today, he is drinking water though and I was told by the vet yesterday that he is perfectly healthy and normal and to give him a few cc's of syrup or honey about 4 times a day..so far I have given it to him two times...8 am and around 1..he doesn't have episodes or anthing relatively close but I guess it's as a precaution. He won't eat though, could it be filling him up? Also, yesterday on the way to the vet he spit up like a thick slobbery liquid..no food in it and he just did it again recently...could it be because of the syrup? I am probably way overreacting but I am very new to this Yorkie mom thing so I am terrified today about him not really eating at all today and his spitting up incidents. Is this normal...and is it normal for me to be so upset? |

| I would think that the syrup would be too sweet for his little tummy, but if your vet says it's ok, then what can ya do. What kind of food are you trying to feed him? Also, do you know what kind of food he was being fed before you got him? It could be because he's not used to a different food and is not willing to eat. Another thought, he could be drinking too much and filling up on water. |

| yeah i agree.. syrup is too much. Just think as if he was a real baby. he needs bland food Like, boiled chicken or something.. or turkey When I got wookie and he wouldn't eat.. my breeder recommended to mix a little bit of chickbroth with his dry food.. and he gobbled it all up |

| Well he won't eat what the breeder sent me home with so I tried a different kind which he seemed to really like..he is much more interested in the adult dog food but today nothing interests him...and he is seeming to spit up his water right after he drinks it..I am just getting sick worrying about him. |

| I would not do the syrup either because it is probably too sweet for him. I would get some NutriCal from the pet store and give it to him the same way you've been giving him the syrup. How old is he? While you are at the petstore, get some canned food and start mixing it with his hard food. That should entice him to eat. If he starts eating really well, the give him less nutrical/syrup. Giving too much sugar can cause diabetes later. But definately do give the nutrical/syrup if he isn't eating. You want to prevent a hypoglocemic episode. |

| I just talked to the vet and he said that I should discontinue giving him the syrup...maybe just at night to keep his blood sugar up for so long and to crush up the adult dog food that my roommate gives her doggy! He said it has basically the same things in it as puppy food just bigger so crush it or moisten it to give him since that is all he is interested in..he says I am overreacting a bit but I don't want to underreact...he just keeps spitting up so I am stressing way out! |

| Well, I don't know much about this since I won't get my baby until Friday, however...........your vet doesn't seem to be that bright. I mean, what is it? Give the syrup - Don't give the syrup. And he should be sympathetic to your worries. It's not like it isn't warranted.

| Okay, I have to say it. Time for a new vet, this one knows DIDDLY about toy breeds. PLEASE get a recommendation from someone in your area that breeds toy dogs. The Nutrical/Karo/Syrup is not meant as a substitute for food, and NO you are NOT over reacting! That baby needs FOOD, the sugar is just to get him over the hump and get him eating again. Here is a formula I posted a while back that saved my Luna's life, after the pet store's vet told me to give her a full teaspoon every hour You can read about it here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...a+hypoglycemia

| By the way, if he's lethargic, or if his gums look gray (they should be pinkish-red), get him to the emergency vet for IV fluids. Keep him warm, no drafts! You can tell if he's cold if his ear tips feel cold. Try to keep his travels to a minimum for the next few weeks as well.
