| I believe that Yorkie pups should stay with mom until they are at least 12 weeks -- and then they should be evaluated individually for readiness to go to forever homes. |

| Our experience is that most breeders will not let them go until 12 weeks.

Now, this is just my opinion. In their first 12 weeks they seem to learn much more from their momma than they do from us. They learn manners, they learn play, they learn dog language. They learn how to keep themselves clean. They learn it with a paw, a nip, a grr, a lick . I've noticed that puppies who stay with their momma's & other pets in the home seem to be more social, less stressed and more independant when they go to their new homes. The only experience I have had has been getting a maltese pup @ 8 wks who was raised in a cage, a 5 wk old maltese yorkie mix rescue & lots of yorkie puppies growing up under foot. You can tell when a pup is socially ready to go to his new home. They are terrier's; bold, confident, tenacious & loving. PS: or it's because we want to hold on to them as long as we can because they are so special.

| I agree that 10 or 12 weeks is best.... I got mine at 8 weeks - but it worked out very well for several reasons. 1) He was a large pup (not a tiny little thing) 2) He was eating on his own like a little horse - 3) He came to a home with another dog - and had a new best friend almost immediately...and another dog at that! And, he has slept all night every night since I got him (he's 15 months old now.) I have had absolutely no problems with my pup....and today, he is the most laid back, nonbarking, sweet, affectionate, playful little guy you'd ever want. He loves every person and every animal he ever meets. He has never acted agressive in anyway - I can honestly say that I have never heard him growl ---I wonder if he knows how..... His best friend, my other dog, has the same personality. So, they get along very well. HOWEVER - In spite of my good luck, I still think these little dogs should stay with their mothers as long as possible. Carol Jean |

| Well, it is BEST to bring them home at 10 or 12 weeks, but so many breeders these days are letting them go earlier. I brought Hobbs home at 8 weeks and we had no problems and we brought Hootie home at 7 weeks and we had no problems. But just because we didn't have any problems does not mean it is ideal. |

I got Trixie at 13 weeks. The breeder is a firm believer that the longer you keep them with the mother the better the pup will be socialized and behaved. And I have to say, I wouldn't want it any other way.

Donating YT 14K Club Member | The longer the pup stays with moms, the better. My pups stay with me till 11-12 weeks...but I've kept a couple longer 13-14 weeks. Now, I've purchased one male (unknown to me since I didn't leave with registration papers and breeder lied about age) that was a little over 6 weeks old. Once I received the papers...months later, is when I realized his true age. My most recent male was a little over 8 weeks when I got him. I would not suggest getting a puppy younger than 8 weeks. Like I said, the longer the breeder keeps them, the better for the pup. They learn lots of socialization skills from their mom and litter mates during this time.
