Default Hello Everyone.

Hello,

My name is Phuong and I found this site through yahoo's search engine while trying to find Yorkie Breeders in Sacramento, CA.
I found a love for Yorkshire Terriers litterally 5 hours ago. I will admit I am not a pet person most of my life but my girlfriend and I have taken interest in pets ever since we saw those adorable looking maltese. But in my opinions Yorkies look better, as a matter of fact they look a little tougher than maltese. I like small dogs but I need them to look a little tough. lol. Yorkie tough? I know what your saying. But the black and gold ones remind me of those rottweilers(sp). Even though I do not like those dogs.
Anywas, I found this website to be very informative and interesting and only fuels my quest for a Yorkie. Thank you for the FAQ thread. I was gonna die if I had to sift through pages of threads trying to find general questions regarding yorkies/pets in general. I have a couple of questions to ask you folks and I apologize before hand if they might sound dumb, but I am a first time pet owner. I dont think fish can count no? lol

1) Through some searches it appears females yorkies are more expensive than males, why? Only reason is females can breed and other reason why?
2) Are there personality difference between a female or male yorkie?
3) What are the cost on vet services regarding the run-of-mill requirements to keep the dogs healthy?(ie, shots, deworm, checkups, etc, etc.)
4) Whats the protocol on vet visits? How many times a month?
5) What are the typical cost for one? I dont have a whole lot of money at this time but Ill save up some money and get it. I just need to know the prices. Ill might end up getting a male since they are less expensive and I am not looking to breed. I just want one to love and care for!!! From many websites the running cost for males go for $500 supposedly.

So far such a long post and so many questions. Hopefully you guys can help me out. I still have more questions but I will just ask more later.

Bonus Question : Does anyone live in the SACRAMENTO/ELK GROVE and surrounding communities(CALIFORNIA) can give me some contacts to yorkshire breeders? I am wanting to buy one reallll soon.

Thank you and have a nice day.

Hello, I'll answer the questions as best as I can. There is also a search feature (on blue bar up above) that is a big help when looking for answers.

Yes, it's because they can have puppies.

2) Are there personality difference between a female or male yorkie?
Yes but you will get many different opinions about that. I prefer males. I think they are more loving and friendlier. The males always become my buddies. Girls are great too though.

3) What are the cost on vet services regarding the run-of-mill requirements to keep the dogs healthy?(ie, shots, deworm, checkups, etc, etc.)
Here for the first puppy visit, puppy shots and office visits it came to about $250 total. It was spread out over four months.
Then another $218 for neutering and a tooth pulled. It might cost you more in California.

4) Whats the protocol on vet visits? How many times a month?

You want to get a physical exam right away to make sure you have a healthy puppy. So ours were general check-up, shots at 12 weeks, then at 16 weeks and rabies shot at 6 months. Then neutering if you choose to do so.
Then if your yorkie stays healthy you don't need to go back until about a year later.

You might want to research the Lepto shot. A lot of yorkies have reactions to it so many owners choose not to have it given.

5) What are the typical cost for one?
I dont have a whole lot of money at this time but Ill save up some money and get it. I just need to know the prices. That is low. It's not impossibe -- people here on YT have gotten their dogs for that much -- but it also depends on where you are located. I believe they are more expensive in California. They are in Jersey. So be careful if it seems too good to be true. I would say it is more like $1,000 to $2,000.

My best advise would be do a lot of research (then do some more) and don't rush into buying.
I don't think I've ever seen another breed that can be as different from each other as this one.
They are very popular right now and people are taking advantage of that. So many people end up spending too much and (even though they love them) not getting the dog they expected.

Thank you and have a nice day.
You're welcome. I hope that helps a little. I wish someone had said it to me so I'll tell you again. Research especially since this is your first dog. Yorkies are even trickier than other breeds. You can learn so much on YT. I have.

Hi and welcome. Let me see if I can answer some of your questions. The price of females is higher because they are more in demand. Some people prefer females and some prefer males. The costs: It costs me $200 anually for their shots. Monthlly you have flea preventatives and Heartworm preventatives. I dont purchace either of these from the vet because I have found it cheaper elsewhere. I goot my advantage flea prevention on ebay for $18 for 3 months. I get my heartworm preventative Heartguard from Petshed. I forget how much it cost. Good luck

Females are in more demand. I am still waiting for a female and have to admit that I thought females were better pets and that is all we have ever had -- until Ben. He is the most loving and cuddly little dog we have ever had! I cannot believe I resisted having a male Yorkie for so long. He is the best! He cost $1200, a little over $100 for vet checks and vaccines, and an embarrasing amount on accessories, clothes and toys. He is worth every penny and more. We are still getting our little girl in December, hope she is even half as sweet as Ben!

Good luck in your quest to find a Yorkie. You have gotten good advice about the research. Find a good, responsible breeder and you can't go wrong with a Yorkie!

I've only ever bought boys (my girls have been rescues or from people that couldn't keep them), so I didn't realize girls cost more because of demand. I thought it was because they can give you puppies vs the lower cost of stud service.

See, I am still learning and I've been here a while.

Welcome! If you do your search right and get a pup froma reputable breeder your vet costs will not be high at all. Maybe two visits a year and like $80 for a puppy package that include the necessary shots. Why are females higher? Well there is a higher demand for females because to many the are $$$$$ signs, other like the dresses accesories and fun stuff that go along with them and with reputable breeders they are harder to come across as they usually are kept for their show/breeding programs. Many people do argue that males are more laid back and make better pets, I wouldn't as I have a female, but breeders say female usually run their own program , if you know what I mean. Anyhow I have a girl and wouldn't have it anyother way. Hope this helps and best wishes on finding the perfect pup for your household.

I have one of each and my female is bossier but cuddlier. My male is a happy playful little guy but not too cuddley. I don't think it matters what sex you get. Just pick one you like. I think $500.00 for a male is pretty low. Especially in California. But maybe prices are coming down. When I was looking I couldn't find a male for less than 1000.00 and females started around 1200.00 (I paid 1400.00 for my female and only 700.00 for my male-he was rehomed when his original owner couldn't keep him). While annual vet bills aren't too bad on a healthy yorkie, you need to consider that spaying and neutering can cost several hundred as well so before you jump in with both feet consider saving up a bit more than the purchase price before you get your yorkie. Also, I wouldn't recommend getting a really small one as the possibility of illness and injury increases quite a bit. I have two around the 5.5-6.5 range and they are pretty tough.
