| Harfing Sound Maybe some of you have experienced this. Maggie was sitting on my lap a few minutes ago. She started a harfing sound. Like she was trying to get something out of her throat. I massage her throat very gently. She then sneezed. Then started the harfing sound again. I reached over to the end table and got an ice cube out of my glass. She started licking on it. All of a sudden the harfing stopped. Is this that thing they call the reverse sneeze? I looked that one up in her Yorkie Book. It said no cure, no worry. Would like to see what everyone else thinks. She went to the vet this morning, and all was great. |

| yeah i think that is reverse sneeze.... i posted a question about it a while ago, and i couldnt come up with an accurate description of what it sounded like....lol....... but harfing is good ..... i usually distracts toby and he stops, other people say then close their nostrils for a few seconds or blow on their nose....... |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Chanel does it lots ...especially when she's excited - Orinsky is right about closing their nostrils so they breath thru their mouth - also distracting them helps too... |

| Little Miss Harf Thank You Red and Orinsky. I feel much better already. Now I know what to do instead of the ice cube. I will try closing of the nose next time. When I broke out the Yorkie book, my husband wanted to know what was going on. I told him it's a Yorkie Dr. Spock book. He just looked at me funny and went about his way. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Since I really dont like holding their nostrils shut cause I watch too many serial killer shows - I usually hold and release... hold and release ...hold and release... just try that for a minute and they usually stop - I've heard you don't want that snorting going on cause it can damage their trachea - PLUS - it sounds awful when they do it and you think they're sick or hurting - but mine always stop when I do the "tapping" on the nostrils... |

| One of my books says that pushing the head down toward the chest while pinching their nose shut. I do that even when I am in a check-out line and I hear a dog making that sound. Of course, I ask for permission from the owner. I have yet to find someone who says NO--that tells me they love their baby and are concerned about something they don't know how to handle..The dogs are fine and not afraid after they stop the Harfing sound. |

| There are many strains of bacteria or virus that get lumped under the diagnosis of Kennel cough. Even if a dog is given Bordetella vaccine it is like a human getting a flu shot. They just cannot cover every causative agent. There is a regimen of giving the dog Panacur for 5 days along with Vibramycin, Clavamox and using a croup tent (warm air mister) at night and doing a procedure called Coupage..that is thumping lightly on the chest or back area over the lungs.. You might ask your vet if any of these things would help your baby. Sometimes vets don't appreciate being told how to treat an animal so only consider any of this if you do not have raport with your vet. It is so distressing when these babies are sick even for a few days..Good Luck with your lil darlin'!! |
