| Help, Diesel won't wear his shirts Hopefully someone will have some advice for me . . . . .I've tried to put a t-shirt on Diesel to keep him warm but it's a little bit too big and he manages to get out of it. He doesn't seem to like it too much. I just ordered a few online and am worried he'll hate it when I try and dress him. Do any of you have suggestions? | When you get one that fits him well, MAKE him have it put on, even if he struggles. Then, once it's on, and especially if it's cold out, he'll like it. Higgins HATED to have his camping sweatshirt put on, but then he learned that it kept him warm and now he tolerates having it put on. Same with the sweater I just knitted him. HATED having it put on, but loves it once it is on and he's warming up. Now, I don't think Higgins really cares about clothes very much, so we only put him in things to keep him warm when necessary. Hang in there.....keep trying......but get ones that fit well. |

Great thanks a lot for the advice. Finding one that fits right now is hard, due to his tiny size. I'll keep trying though. I wish they had one that would fit him now, especially cause this morning it was very cold outside. He was shivering so we just brought him in. The sweater would have come in handy! Thanks again for your help. How old is Higgins? That is such a cute name! How many pounds is he? I'm trying to figure out how many pounds my guy will be. They told us he was a teacup but I've since learned, that doens't exist.

Higgins is 9 1/2 months old now and 7 lbs. The vet predicts that when he's all done growing, he'll be a big boy of about 8 lbs., which is fine with us. I am not exactly tiny (boy, that's putting it mildly!), so I didn't want one toooooo tiny. (Actually, I wanted a Pug, because that's what I look like, but Don wanted a Yorkie, but that's NOT what he looks like, but he am a terrier at heart.....I digress.....again....) There are all kinds of formulas for guessing what they will grow to be, but none of them worked for Higgins. Chances are that if both parents are smallish, the puppies will tend to be smaller. Higgin's mother was a whopping 10 lbs and his father was 5 lbs. He's right in the middle. However, his sister was a much larger baby....don't know what she is now. A lot of breeders emphasize the small size of their pups, but the fact is Yorkies can range for 2 lbs to more than 12 lbs and it there are no guarantees. The only thing you can be pretty sure of is that whatever they weigh, you'll love them like you've never loved any other doggie in your life! Higgins is named for the mannerly British gentleman character on "Magnum P.I." When we got Higgins, he was so tiny and energetic, that Don wanted to call him "Magnum" and that gave me the idea for Higgins......Thought he might grown up to have nice British manners for a British dog.....HA HA HA HA! You mention that it was cold this morning when you took Diesel out to pee....Having owned many dogs over the years, winter is the BEST time to housetrain a puppy to the outside! If you get them in the summer and take them outside to go, they just like to play and smell the flowers and take FOREVER to pee. But in WINTER, that little tinkler gets cold in a hurry and they pee fast! So take him out for just a few minutes, but don't let him get thoroughly chilled. I notice that you live in Stamford, Ct. I lived on Shippan Point there many years ago. Then lived in Rowayton, and finally for 8 years in Essex, CT. Last edited by Higgin's Mom; 10-06-2004 at 07:27 AM.

Oh boy. My two do not like their clothes either. They are just now beginning to tolerate them. The trick for me was putting them on once a day or so, and even if they got them off, making sure that they were getting accustomed to them. When they were resting and getting ready to sleep, I would put their sweater on them like a blanket too. Now they see it as a comfortable thing to have around. Just my 2

Also, I read somewhere that doubling their 12 week old weight should tell you their full grown adult weight. I don't know how accurate that is, but it would put Karma at 6 pounds and Boomer at 4 and a half.

Regarding very small clothes for Diesel just at the moment, I'll tell you what I did if you promise not to laugh! I found a few teddy bears (2nd hand ones) wearing jackets and altered them to fit little Gizzie (yeah made them SMALLER!). They won't fit long obviously but at least they didn't cost me much. The designer gear can wait until she's fully grown!! Ana xxx

Yes, make sure it fits snug, and then they can't wriggle out of it! When we first put clothes on Yoda, he HATED IT and would always try to get out of it. But he learned as well that it kept him warm, so now he likes it, just like he likes putting on his harness (cuz he gets to go somewhere!). I'd suggest putting the clothes on, then taking them outside a bit if it's cold, it'll help them associate clothes with being warm. Just don't try to train them to wear clothes when it's 80 degrees out.

When I lived in Rowayton, I lived on Belle Island for a few years and then in the Rowayton Beach Association for awhile. Rowayton is such a neat town! But I understand that it has sure changed a lot. I haven't been back to Rowayton since 1980.......almost 25 years!!!!! (Gosh, I'm older than dirt....) Essex is a wonderful place! Very affluent, like Darien and most of Fairfield County. If you have ever heard of the Groundhog Day celebration in Essex with "Essex Ed", I am Ed's mother. My kids and I built the first 36' around x 14' high papier mache Essex Ed in 1978 and got the annual celebration going in town. They still celebrate it bigtime! My favorite place in the world is the Tap Room at The Gris (Griswold Inn), so if you go there, lift one for me. And if anyone here has AIM (aol), my AIM name is "GroundhogMama" and I'd love to chat! Next summer I want to go back to Connecticut for the Deep River Muster, the third Saturday in July! The oldest and largest fife and drum muster in the world and a real blast! After Connecticut, I lived in Vermont for 13 years and then moved to Maine for love in 1998! I was widowned in 1995 and met my Don, a widower living in Maine, on Match.com!!!! How about that? Old folks doin' the modern thing! We got married on Valentine's Day 1999. So now you all know a little bit more about me! We ought to get an introduction thread going........
