| Earliest age What do you think about getting a Yorkie at a really young age (say 3-4 weeks when the puppy begins to become slightly independent). Won't they bond better with you if you owned them earlier. I've heared rumors that the only reason breeders recommend taking them after 12 weeks is so they can weed out the pet quality pups from the champs for themselves. Why is it so important for a puppy to be with other dogs so early on anyways? Dogs are instinctively dogs and it seems like they only learn bad habits from their siblings (fighting, barking, peeing everywhere.) Do you really want your puppy to bond with the breeder first or you. If you've brought a Yorkie (less than 7 weeks old home) let me know so that I can determine if I am making sense here. |

| We got Yoda at four weeks. He comes from a champion lineage show dog, but this family only breeds now and sells Yorkies as pets. I honestly think Yoda bonded so much with us because he was with us since he was so young. The first few days he was terrified, but we were loving and caring. He slept an awful lot (maybe 18-20 hours a day) the first week or two we had him. It still took a while to train him, but he hasn't gone bathroom anywhere he's not supposed to. He does occassionally throw up, but we don't get mad at him for that. I don't know why either, but most places recommend at least 2 months before they will let you take a Yorkie. Perhaps they are looking to show their dogs, or see if any of them are of the smaller variety, as the smaller ones can command a higher price. I'd suggest going to the breeder in person if possible, and discussing or looking at the what kind of breeder they are. But, if they are adamant about not letting you take a Yorkie before 12 weeks, there's really not much you can do. |

| Regardless of the breed, I don't think puppies younger than 8 weeks should be taken from their moms. There is a learning curve that young pups get from their parents and the rough and tumble of playing with their siblings. We got Higgins at 3 days shy of 8 weeks, and he was eating kibble really well and playing and asserting himself nicely. Higgins weighed 1 lb 4 oz when we got him but gained weight right away. I'm not sure I agree that ALL Yorkies should be 12-15 weeks before they go to their homes. I think it depends very much on the puppy and his canine momma, and how "independent" and well adjusted the puppy is. Good breeders don't necessarily keep the show dogs for themselves. Most show quality prospects can be found at 8 - 10 weeks by an experienced show person/breeder. If you expect to show a puppy, expect to pay for that quality. And if you plan to breed, buy the best show quality sire and dam or pup that you can find. Good breeders want to better the breed! |

| Mary Ellen I quite agree with you about 8 weeks being an ideal age. Quite honestly the idea of a pup aged 4 wks leaving their mother scares me! Our two were both 8 wks and whereas I couldn't wait for them to come home to us, I wouldn't have wanted them earlier, yorkies are so small and can dehydrate and all sorts when young. Not that I'm critising anyone for having them earlier of course not when they have good homes with people from this site lol! BUT they could go to unsuitable homes too and they really are babies at that age and need their mother - ahhh!! Ana xx |

| I let my Yorkies go at 8 weeks if : they are not too small, a puppy can have hpyoglaxsema (low blood sugar) I cant spell. A 4 week pup hasn't had enough shots to protect it from parvo. and we also worm them at 2,3,4,6,8,10 weeks. I tell my new mommas too if taken at 8 weeks. we also give albon for coccidiosis, which is caused from stress and yes moving a puppy to a new home can cause this. It can kill a pup. also the mother doesn't really totally wean them most of the time till they are 4-5 weeks old. If you will watch her she also teaches them manners. That is just a few of the reasons we dont let a baby go at 4 weeks.

| I think that 4 weeks is waaaay to young to purchase a pup,if you take a pup this young home,it will deffinately bond with you,but it wont be a very social dog, especially with other dogs. Most breeders have just started weaning their pups at that age,so taking a pup straight from its motherīs teet, into its new home just seems cruel to me. At 4 weeks you have no idea what kind of personality this puppy will have,it wont be eating properly yet at this age and its still learning from its mommy and siblings. Its selfish to just worry about the bonding..I think its alot better to buy a healthy 8week old puppy and bond with it later on.Once you have your healthy puppy at home, you have all the time in the world to bond with it..theres no rush Last edited by Chelsie1978; 10-05-2004 at 02:43 AM. |

| I just discovered ... I am a bad Mom!! I thought for almost a year that Toto was 16 weeks when we got her! She was 13 1/2 weeks!! We were supposed to get her at 16 weeks but were going out of town and the breeder finally relented! Amazing what you can learn when you actually LOOK at your calendar! Anyway ... I thought it was the longest wait of my life but now I'm glad we patiently waited! If Toto were any more "bonded" to me, she would be a little lump under my skin!! We made three trips to the vet that first week we had her! I haven't been that scared of anything that small in a long, long time!!
