| Chocolate can be deadly to dogs! Dog can have a sweet tooth, However, chocolate contains theobromine, a first cousin of caffeine. This ingredient is responsible for the "buzz" we get from chocolate. It increases the amount of calcium available to cells, increases the heart rate, and causes th erelease of hormones from the adrenals. In high enough quanities it can STOP the HEART!!!!! Unsweetened chocolate or baking has 10 time more than choc. milk and found in candy. this is a hazard and can cause diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and even death....Pleae don't give your puppy or dog this!!! I found this artice in the A.K.C. Family Dog Issue Spring/Summer 2005 |

| Yes, thanks for the warning! We have had several scares on different forums. One dog ate white chocolate and we learned that this kind is not deadly. The deadliest is dark chocolate and just one ounce per lb of weight can kill a dog. So a two lb yorkie can die from eating a relatively small piece of candy. Milk chocolate just takes more to have an effect but it's still dangerous. Unfortunately I love dark Chocolate!!! It's also important not to feed your dogs "chocolate flavored treats or foods because it will make them crave the chocolate and try to get to it when it might not otherwise. |

| I had a horrible experience with dark chocolate and my greyhound.....but learned a GREAT LESSON about doggie first aide. I had been shopping for "extras" ...getting ready to bake for Christmas. I had a large grocery bag with 'melting chocolate' and 2 bags of 'semi-sweet dark chocolate chips' set in the floor (by the stairs to go to the basement pantry for whoever went down the stairs next)..... Needless to say the bag was forgotten and left there overnight...My greyhound NEVER CHEWS UP ANYTHING........but that night my husband woke up to a funny 'noise' @ 1:30 am.....it was the greyhound trying to rip open the bag of melting chocolate...she had already finished off the 2 BAGS OF SEMI-SWEET CHIPS!!! 24 ounces total!!!!!!! He woke me up...just because he thought I should clean up the mess....I knew chocolate was TOXIC but he was convinced the dog would be fine!!! I call the 24 hour emergency vet...they told me to get her to the clinic ASAP....but first give her peroxide and make her vomit.... I had to give her 15 cc's of peroxide..(by large syringe...I am a home nurse and have that kind of stuff in my car)...no vomit...gave her 15 MORE cc's of 'fresh' peroxide...then closed her up in the bathroom. Within 10 minutes we heard her "erupting" in there!!!!! My hubby had to use a SNOW SHOVEL to get that giant pile of chocolate vomit up from the floor. I told him I was sorry he had to do that..he said "no problem....it smelled kinda good".....(YUK) She was extremely sick for a week after that....one of the wost effects she had long term was VERY SWOLLEN JOINTS AND MUSCLES in her back legs....very painful. Lessons learned...... 1) peroxide will make a dog vomit...have used it again with the chihuahua who was found eating fire ant granules!!!!! 2) peroxide can get old..the stuff in my cabinet was 'old'...but the stuff in my car was 'fresh' 3) Never underestimate any dog...they can and will chew up something ...eventually! |

| Thanks for this. I think that this is something that a lot of people don't know - and it is so easy to think you are treating your dog by giving him a little piece of chocolate. We have to be so careful - especially with our little ones! However, I think if I found out that chocolate would kill me - I would still eat it!! What a wonderful way to go
