Dog New member!/New to be owner(soon)

Our family has three girls ages14,4 and 10 months.
My 14 y/o has asked for a yorkie for 3 years and we are going to honor that this christmas as a surprise. I have been doing research and am still learning.
Is is bad that I have young ones in the home for the dog? My children are not destructive and are very disciplined and of course have been around many animals. I have had mixed reports on young children and Yorkies. Anyone have a response or experience to share? Thanx.

I think as long as your kids know how to handle the puppy, all should be good. Just make sure that the younger ones are always supervised with the pup. Something you need to keep in mind though is if the puppy goes through a biting phase. My Rocky went through this, and still occasionally things that fingers are chew toys. You definitly do not want the pup to nip at the kids. Good luck! And Welcome to YT

I have had animals all my life...When I had my skinkids I taught them to respect and be kind to animals...my skingirls were very gentle and kind...however they are children...sometimes they hug just a little to hard and don't even realize it..they can end up hurting the puppy (as yorkie puppies are very very small). I thought about breeding when I first got Sadie and one of the things I had decided was that I wouldn't sell to anyone with small children...I didn't want to sound mean but didn't want to get a call telling me that their child accidently hurt or,worse, the poor puppy..I don't know how many good breeders you will find that will sell to someone with small children...Have you thought about buying an adult?

Welcome! I had a Yorkie when my dtr was born and have always had a small dog around her and we had no problems. You really have to know your kids to make sure you get the right size puppy. I would be concerned that a 10 month old who will or is just starting to walk could easily fall unintentionally on a little puppy and really hurt it. I think it can be done especially with a little bigger size Yorkie but you have to be very vigilent.

You have to keep in mind that a yorkie pup at 12 weeks only around 2lbs and would be so easily hurt. If it was me and I got one for my 14 year old I would be sure and tell he/she she is it's new mom and they have to take care of it as a BABY.

Default yorkies and little ones

Hi hope this will set you a litlle ease. I like the others agree that you must keep a close eye on the kids with the yorkie but i have 2 little granddaughter one of whom is always here and has been from the time we got them .. they do adore my little granddaughters and are always wanting to play with her esp the one who is here all the time. the littlest one i would esp be careful around the yorkie til they get to walking better and stuff and the yorkie gets a bit older. again i hope this helps...

Default Bigger yorkie

Welcome to YT!! Why don't you try to find a yorkie that is going to be on the bigger side? There's more to love and they're a little easier on the wallet!!

WELCOME to YT, I found that alot of breeders when calling on their pups would quiz me to ask the ages of my kids 13 and 7. I was told if my kids were 4 and under they wouldn't even think of letting me buy from them.

Grayson is little thing, and you will learn alot from here! Be sure to post us some picutres when you get your pup!
