| Low Sperm Count Ok, so I took my Yorkie to the vet to check his sperm count, and it turned out it was very low . there were two females in heat at the Vets office, and he basically ignored them both A neighbor of mine wants to use my Yorkie for her female, but as of now I am vry confused/ disapointed. My Vet suggested a series of hormone injections to try to jumpstart his testicles. What do you think? any recomendation? What would be the name of this hormone? |

I would hope if he is your pet and your neighbours females are her pets, they aren't used for breeding anyway. There are many whys and wherefores for the reason for breeding and not breeding, many discussions on this forum about it. Check them out.

There can be however, other causes for low sperm count. First check for any infections including the teeth. Do they need cleaning are any infected? If that checks out you may want to do a thyroid test, sometimes a thyroid out of whack can cause a low sperm count. If it does all boil down to a low hormone problem or thyroid problem, I would not recommend him for breeding purposes if you have to artificially bring up the sperm count. It may not pass on to sons but certainly can pop up again further down the line.

If he has dirty teeth carrying bacteria and even infections, it can affect sperm production. Actually dirty infected teeth can cause bacteria to enter the blood stream and affect heart, liver, kidneys as well. This is why dental care in toy dogs is so important, they do have a tendancy for teeth problems. Teeth can be infected/dirty and the dog can be in considerable pain. They don't show pain that readily so people don't realize the problem is going on. Before using a male for stud, I always check the teeth on both my bitch and my stud or if I am going for a stud service, I want to check those teeth first. I don't want that bacteria from his mouth anywhere near my bitch and I don't want my bitch to have dirty teeth when she will be whelping puppies. All that bacteria from either the stud or bitch can create a lot of problems you don't need to have when doing a mating and ultimately whelping a litter.
