| New Mommy/have questions Hi all, nice to find this forum. I'm a new mommy for a 6 yr. old baby Yorkie name Pepper. She is so sweet, but I never had a female before. I also have a 1 yr old male Chihuahua name Pancho. Now Pepper is in heat, I understand 3 weeks, but at what age do female start menopause? Reason Pepper is getting upset with Pancho always smelling around ( me too). I would hate to have her spayed at this age, & Pancho is from top breeding & he is already set for stud next year, so he's out of the question. I crete & have put diapers on her (she tears them with in minutes). any advice would be greatfull. Thanks Angelidiluce |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk! Dogs do not go through menopause, m'dear. In fact, my Higgins mother was TEN YEARS old, which is, in my opinion, waaaaay too old to breed a dog, but that's another story...... I showed English Setters in another lifetime, and they couldn't be spayed for the show ring. But as soon as they were "retired" from the show ring, I had them spayed! It was at about six years old, as I recall. It's not too late to have your little one spayed! You will have to wait until this heat is over, however. You and she....and little Pancho.....will be glad if you have her spayed, too! |

| Hi Angelidiluce, Pepper and Pancho....Welcome to YT!!! Sorry, I don't know much about your question but I just wanted to welcome you to our community. I am coming up on the time to make a decision myself b/c my Cookie is going to be 6 months this month...to spay or not to spay I don't know if I should let her have one litter and then get her spayed or just do it now... Obviously I have questions of my own...LOL! Well welcome to YT...there are many helpful members here who are sure to point you in some direction. -RubyC |

| Welcome to YT, Angelidiluce! Higgin's Mom's suggestion sounds good to me! We had Toto spayed at 8 months. Our vet said because she is so small [4 lbs. now at 14 1/2 months] that the "6 month spay rule" didn't necessarily apply and since we were out of town that it would be OK to wait. We planned to have her spayed even before we bought her ... we were not interested in having babies nor showing her although she is purebred and has an impressive pedigree. We just wanted the best Yorkie baby we could find! Unless you are planning to have babies, I would definitely have her spayed. I have never owned a female that wasn't ... it would seem to me that it would just too problematic to have one that goes into heat. Good luck!

| Spaying before the first heat is the best thing to do. That way the hormones don't do their thing and the dog stays much healthier and doesn't tend to gain weight either. Unless you intend to breed a dog -- which requires much serious consideration -- spaying is the nicest, healthiest thing you can do for your little female. Breast cancer is more prevalent in unspayed dogs. One of my unspayed setters died of it, since I didn't spay her as a youngster. And the heats are are REAL NUISANCE to go through, let me tell ya. "Letting her have one litter before spaying her" is an old wives tale that is not in the best health interests of the dog. |

| Well for now she will come in for 5 days a bloodie show then turn clear and thats when your chi could get her you need to put her in a cage on something. So he can not reach her. I don't do the diaper thing I just cage my female. Then you will have 5 days as she goes out of heat. Hope this helps.

| I met a lady with a 12 year old yorkie the other week and hate to tel you but she said her yorkie was still having seasons!! It is a real worry I know and Gypsy Rose only had the one season before being spayed - that was enough for me!! So it sounds as if yorkies can carry on for quite a while! Ana xx |
