| my yorkie has horse parasites just got a phone call from my vet, my 14 month old yorkie, male has horse parasites. i just have him 1 week and do not know how he got them. does anyone have any helpful info on this? my vet said it is curable, and told me i am over reacting. i just wanted to know if damage has been done to him from this parasite. either he breathed in the parasite or ate horse poop. my vet said he needs 2 treatments to get rid of it. any info will be appreciated thanks |

| parasites IF you have only had him for a week, then he came to you with parasites...most take at least 14 days from ingestion to show in a stool...the vet can cure him, be glad of that...you need to tell the breeder about this, if one has them, then it is mostly likely all do...best wishes |

| When you say horse parasites, what do you mean. There are quite a few "horse parasites". If it's just a type of worms, I wouldn't get too worried. You can just give him some wormer in a couple of doses and be done with it and not have to worry about it again. Most of the time when you worm a dog, even for "dog worms" you should do it twice. Once and then again 10 days later. The breeder you got him from probably just didn't worm him. Most breeders start worming at 2 wk old and worm every two weeks until they leave their place. Best of luck.

| my yorkie has horse parasites yes, i know he was given to me with these horse parasites and she has like 15 yorkies. i already emailed her and told her. i think she should pay for the vet treatments, since she told me she wormed them herself. she gave them shots and wormed them. she did not bring them to a vet to have there stool sample checked. have you ever heard of getting these horse worms? thanks elle |

| I know nothing about these parasites and this is just my opinion, but if these are not a typical canine parasite and they came with your baby, the breeder should definitely pay for this vet visit and treatment!!

| Elle, do not get upset about the parasites. I am a owner of horses, and that is one of the many parasites that horses get. My guess is, this breeder kept her puppies in the barn and were allowed to eat horse manure. I for one do not allow my dogs to go near the barn let alone the ground. If you have a good relationship with this breeder then by all means ask her if she would split the cost of the Vet charges with you. Seems like she doesn't worm any of her animals. Just my observations. |

| Aawwwwww, I'm sorry your little baby isn't feeling too good. I hope he's feeling better soon. I'm sure the vet will get rid of the parasites and your little guy will be good to go.

| I guess it would depend to me on how much I paid for the dog. If she sold it really cheap because it was 14 months old and the treatment isn't too expensive, I would just chalk it up to experience and be glad the vet found it so early. The other thing I would be concerned about is if you have other animals that this one has been around, you might need to treat all of them which might increase your costs. Usually just a routine worming is not that costly and the vet might just give you the medicine for your other animals. Good luck to you and keep us updated. |

| Strongyles or bloodworms are going to be a little more difficult to get rid of then the normal dog worms and they can cause damage to blood vessels (large type) or the lining of the colon or cause severe stomach ulcers (small type). They can remain encysted in the intestinal wall (dormant) and not show up or be affected by wormers. So your breeder is probably telling the truth that the pup was wormed, but the stress of changing environments probably caused them to become active. Of course, the dog came to you with them unless you have a horse around - I think she should pay for the treatment, but would take into consideration, like Doortego mentioned, the price paid. |

| If my vet wasn't too upset and said that "two treatments" would take care of the problem - I wouldn't be very upset either. Good Luck! Carol Jean |

| Wow, I so sorry your yorkie is sick with horse parasites. I agreed your breeder should pay for the vet. You only have him for a week so still under the warranty contract, i think. I will have him in my prayers for him to be cure fast and with no problems. Please keep us posted. |

| my yorkie has horse parasites my vet did not make a big deal about the parasites, but how long do i know he has had these for? i paid 500.00 for him, i just loved his disposition and he was very lovable, and i was a stranger when i went into this house. he is quiet and not yappy, and he seems to be getting a little better with getting off the couch. i am just worried he does not have damage done to his organs, i was at her house where she breeds them and i did not see any horses around, maybe one of her neighbors has them. the vet said you can get the horse parasites just from breathing in the air, i guess from where the poop is. i know the breeder told me i had a 2 week lemon law guarentee, but how to i go about doing anything. yes, you are right about the wormers not catching the horse parasites, even though she told me she wormed him. where do the parasites go to in a dog? thanks everyone for all your help elle |
